Sounds like a similar show I’ve watched in the past called Top Shot, but clearly with firearms instead. 

 
I go sharking with my younger brother each summer, usually just tournaments. He's got a Master's Captain 200 ton license and is an LT. in the FDNY Marine division. Funny thing is we usually go out on a tiny 23 foot Mako, lol.

Youtube (or even instagram if you search for fishing stuff enough) is quite addicitive with the fishing videos.  Every night my 5 yo ends up on the verge of tears when we make him read a book instead of watching fishing videos on my phone before bed.  Maybe his 2nd favorite past-time after Pokemon.

RE. Top Hooker - I'm going to have to check that out too....after I explain to my wife what it actually is.

 
Well dang. We rocked this Alaska trip! Over 500 lbs of whites (halibut, ling cod, and rock fish) and over 500 lbs of sockeye.

Keep in mind each sockeye weighs about 6 lbs. so you can do the math. We hit the best sockeye day on the Kenai River in five years. Over 70k sockeye that day. It was absolutely crazy. If we went three minutes without hooking one, something was wrong. The problem was that day was also white fish day, so we started sockeyes at 9 PM  and couldn’t fish too long. The run continued today, and we hit them hard again this AM.

Tomorrow it’s apple fritters at the Moose is Loose bakery in the AM and back to the continental US.

Spending a couple days in Ambergris so tried to get outside the reef today

Caught my personal best Barracuda.  36" and 30#'s.  Fun on light tackle, 15# mono with a light steel leader. Still, a freaking 'cuda. I won't touch them that big but the captain and crew seemed excited to have him. Ciguatera be damned.

Hooked up with the largest bottom fish I've ever had on as well. Started at about 300', got wrapped around coral at 200', got free, then got sharked at about 80'.  Maddening.

Other than that got one nice trigger, a few small yellowtail, some small red snapper, and one spanish mack.  Ceviched the snappers tonight and making tacos out of the amberjack and trigger. Good eating at least.

 
I sold my boat since the last time this thread was bumped. My wife has agreed to let me buy a boat in spring of 2021.

I do have a friend with a 19 foot sea fox that I will go out on a few times(we went last weekend and I caught a few sheepshead), but not the same as my boat that had a 100 mile offshore range.

I'd usually say if you catch one, kill it, but I think we're beyond that point now.  It doesn't matter.

Fishing for those suckers is becoming quite the craze around here. They’re apparently really good eating, but I have no experience.

Honestly, I really want to catch one.  Where are you located?  I'm not aware of them being widespread here in NJ yet.

The one I know for sure is Beck's Pond.  They're apparently in the far back side of the pond thats not as pressured.

I wouldn't eat anything out of there even if my life depended on it.

 
My nine year old nephew's first blowfish.  Every time he visits it seems we catch come weird creature off the dock. Which just gives me license to embellish the legend of "anything can be in saltwater" a bit more to this landlocked kid.

Surprisingly good eating too. People call them "chicken of the sea". Remove the skin, fry them up, and its like eating a chicken drumstick.  :thumbup:

I caught one of these on a charter down in Captiva this summer - my son was so fascinated that when we did another charter with the same guy a few days later, he asked him to go "puffer fish fishing," and asked if he knew any hot spots for them.  LOL.  We didn't catch any more, but he still talks about it to this day.

 
I've been in the market for something I can take my son fishing in/on for a few months now.  My wish list is:

-Something stable (He's only 5 right now)

-Something I can store easily (no garage space as all bays are occupied - currently have 2 sit-in kayaks hanging from the garage ceiling, but plan to sell at least 1 of them)

-Something I can ideally transport via SUV roof-top OR a small trailer (again, trailer would have to park in my driveway as I'm out of major space

-Something pedal powered - Not a huge need for electric/gas engines.  All the lakes I fish are 9.9HP limited

I was initially looking at a Hobie Mirage Pro Angler tandem, but those things are $6,500!  Then I came across the Jackson/Blue Sky Boatworks 360 Angler - it's a pretty impressive looking rig.  It's basically a 2-hull kayak with a platform and pedal drive.  30 sq. feet of deck space, enough for me to mount another seat for the kid.  Plenty of room for accessories and a cooler.  Very stable.  Breaks down for easy storage.

I was just wondering if anyone has come across one of these things.  It's pretty impressive.

I’m the same boat however I have an 8&5 year old.  Which charter did you get out of Captiva?  We usually stay at South Seas.

Man, what you are describing is definitely something that I have been thinking about a lot as well.  I think the rig you found is pretty cool and I thought I would give you some other potential ideas that I have been considering.

One idea that comes to mind is a Coleman Crawdad.  It's kind of like a minimalist jon boat made by coleman.  I've seen some pretty cool tiny boat projects using the crawdad as the base.  I don't think they make them new, but you can find them used.

Another possibility is simply a canoe.  I've gone fishing in a large 2 seat canoe with one other person.  It is a bit cramped but it works.  I simply went to ****'s and bought one of their large fishing canoes.  Down side, it was heavy.  I was able to transport it on top of a 2002 4runner but it was a beast to get up on the rack.  I don't know that I could do it myself.  I think if you had the budget to spare, like you are looking at now,  you could find a nice 2 person canoe made out of lighter material that could work.  I actually hooked up a bow mount trolling motor on the front of the canoe with a battery in the back.  it worked surprisingly well.

You could also go with a square back canoe and put it on a small trailer.  I know you are wanting to stay away from a trailer, but if you are looking at that Jackson rig I am thinking you would need a trailer for it.  So I never saw one in a store, but I've seen some heavy duty large aluminum square back canoes on craigslist before.  If you found a used aluminum canoe and got a trailer for around $1000 that could work.

This place:  Lancaster County Marine has a lot of good stuff to get ideas from.

We have a couple Feelfree Lure 11.5 fishing kayaks.  They are very sturdy (you can even stand up in them) but paddeling can be difficult at times.  I've always thought it would be nice to hook up a small electric motor to them.  Not sure if they have a pedal option.

Maybe I can buy a drill paddle.

Did not know that hopefully the guide knows. Hurricanes can definitely screw things up. I know it took Cedar Key several years to reopen  their pier after a hurricane pretty much destroyed it I guess about 10 years ago. Really bummed me out because that was my go to place for a weekend get away.

We stay at South Seas too - I used Ramer Fishing Charters.  Captain Jason was FANTASTIC.  His boat isn't big, but it's outfitted with all kinds of cool gear.  Would totally recommend him again in a heart-beat.  We did a charter on the first Tuesday we were there, and had so much fun we went again on Saturday.  He picked us up at the marina back behind the front gate.  If you end up calling him, tell him you know Nick and his son Connor who did two charters with him back-to-back in August say hi!

Riverbreeze down in Oak Hill or one of the ramps at Haulover are better for actual lagoon fishing.  Edgewater better for shrimping.

I use to fish Haulover all the time. It was pretty trashed up the last time I was there. Send all my out of town visitors there to scope out the manatees

Same here.  Saw the biggest gator of my life from the new Manatee observation deck.  Right across on the opposite bank, a legit 12 footer stomped out of the brush and slid right in the water.  We walked over the bridge and got a closer look and it was every bit as big as it looked from the bank.

...Well that's different, but honestly something to consider.  Cheaper than the 360 Angler...can be outfitted with 2 seats.  Appears to store in small spaces and is easily transportable (Love the hitch basket mounting option).  It's ugly/odd looking, but for what I would use it for, something to consider.  Thanks!

I'm not sure I could fish in that. 

Reminds me of a story regarding my grandfather. He was a retired captain in the Navy and flew fighter planes and bombers in World War II and the Korean War. He also captained some Navy ships during that time period.

Anyway, he loved to fish. Every year since I was a kid we've gone to a resort in North Central Minnesota. It's a small camp - about 13 cabins on a chain of smaller lakes. As he got older, into his 90's, he still loved to fish but had a harder time getting around. So we would take him fishing in a pontoon because it was at dock level and easier to get in and out of.

So the last summer he was alive, we were up at camp. He was 92 years old - mind sharp as a tack. And still walked around pretty good and moved around. The first day we were there, his son was taking him fishing, so they started to board the pontoon.

The old Navy man looked at his son and said: "No. I want to fish in a real boat."    :lol:

So they crawled into the 16' V-bottom fishing boat and off they went. 

So when I see that round boat, all I think about is my grandpa:

"I want to fish in a real boat."
