Anyone here use Etsy? (1 Viewer)

So my wife started painting again after a little break.  She's a pretty good painter I have to say.  She was the only person in her class to get accepted to Rhode Island School of Design back in high school.

I helped her set up an ETSY page and she had her first sale today which was cool.  I posted her page on my facebook and she got 550 views tonight somehow after getting nothing for a week.

Does anyone have any advice to increase visibility in her searches?  Anyone know how get her ETSY onto my Instagram?  Any general advice?  Tia!  Pik has needs, so any help is appreciated.

I know nothing about ETSY, but I paint houses for a living and make side $ in photography.

My advice here may seem weird, but in order to increase her visibility I have 2 tricks that I have found successful:

1) Look at an object...door knob is good..or something similar. Focus on the knob, and then try to expand the vision as wide as possible while still being able to keep the knob in mental focus...not necessarily visual focus. After practice, the visual focus will follow the mental.

2) Focus on the larger frame of reference first...then make swipes with the brush based only on the big picture. After some time doing that, step away from the canvas (or whatever medium being used) and then return later to concentrate on the details. After time, the process may need to be reversed (depending on personal perceptions), but after more time, the two perspectives begin to merge into one.

This just my own experience, true artists may have better learning methods...but...I thought I would give it a go. Good luck...painting is awesome!

Thanks you Mr. Miyagi!

Iirc it's all about proper tags and reviews. It will take some time.

Also there's so many sellers that if she wants to make a decent go of it financially, she needs to find a niche and exploit that. 'Photography' or 'knitted hats' or 'wildlife painting' are far too broad.

I bought some legs for a coffee table I was building. Metal hairpin legs. The seller I bought from specialized in metal legs and had tremendous reviews. That's why I decided to do business with them.

She posted mostly water color paintings.  She has originals, Giclee? and prints.  She sold one yesterday but her views have been low.  We read that if you post more stuff the algorithm pushes you up on the searches.  I'm curious if views and sales do the same. It would seem so based on yesterdays stats.  This happened last night after I put on my facebook.  All those views can't be from just that, right?  She got +618 in two hours last night and three total in the WEEK leading up.

Views are still going strong today.  I must have done something right.  What ever happened to that shark painting guy on here?  Or am I thinking of the shark tooth guy, lol?

I'm tempted to post our page on here for opinions but it seems like nobody is outside the Trump threads these days.  I remember when FBG had some artists and such.  Where have you gone José Mesa....

I agree that the tags, descriptions and stuff is important. There might be some SEO experts in here that can help.

I use Etsy all the time to buy her stuff for special occasions.  Or in my case a Ren & Stimpy throw rug for my office.

If you want to get her more exposure I'd consider opening up a fb page along with the instagram page, and cross reference them on every page.  Make sure the etsy page looks well-designed and established before you put real effort into promoting it.  Facebook and google both do extremely targeted search so that people who are looking for her style of art will find it.

Have her post images of it on reddit/deviantart for more exposure and feedback too.  If it's good and she enjoys it the clients will come.

I picked up a bunch of views since I posted this but nobody has an opinion?  Man, the FFA is really dead after all.  What a sad day.

I was hoping for a lil shtick maybe.  Nothing other than my man Daulton.

I don't know anything about art but I viewed the page just in case the stores views helps it get higher up on the search list.  You're welcome.  You can PM me the nudes now.

Excellent PIK95!

I assume you have been staring at door knobs since last night...well done!

IRT to the site, I see that your wife paints houses much better than I do. Plus, she paints scenes that I like to photograph. Further, her painting of light & shadow is similar to my goals in photo taking & processing.

In addition to the architectural works, I really like the sail boats and the flowers...especially the red one...very nice contrast.

The abstracts, I like too, but do not have any personal experience with.

Very impressive on the whole!

EDIT: Oh...forgot to mention the nature scene with the stream...I think it is a stream...really like the interplay of light & shadow in that one.

I would recommend putting A LOT more descriptions where it currently reads "Original Watercolor Paintings and Prints". Its too broad. I think the more key words you put up the more likely someone that does a search will be able to find you.
For example, RokNRole would include the words, "Dong, penis, %^&*@!, cawk, donger, willy, phallus, cartoon drawings" in his etsy store. So some demented perv's search results would show his store first when looking for custom dic-pics.

Just sold the blue boat one also.  Thanks if it was a FBG.
DAMN! It seems like my favs are racking it up!

Thanks for the update PIK.

Actually, this thread has inspired me to look into setting up my own site. So far, I have limited my marketing to local options. I did not have internet access for a long stretch of time, so I never went that route. Now, that I am back online, I should do some research here.

Thus, this thread is perfect for me too.

Let me know when you get moving on it. I would love to see your stuff.  This has been a fun break from coaching soccer for me.

Dude, I could get my own kid to make me a paint by number piece.  She's got to step up her game...   :P

Seriously, there's some cool stuff there.  I like the waves and swirls stuff...  but they all seem pretty small.   I suppose with a decent matting and frame they could be something to hang in a modest space.

Good Luck

Will do. I should have some time next weekend to do some serious research.

The bigger time consumer however, will be converting my photos to an internet friendly format:

1) Since I focus on wall prints, they are all pretty damn big files with high resolution.

2) I photo in RAW format (not viewable on net as far as I know)...and use a processor that let's me print straight from RAW, thus, I have none of my work in JPG, GIF, etc formats. It's easy enough to make the change individually, but it lowers image quality and takes a large amount of time because of the volume of photos.

IF, Etsy allows/enables RAW submissions and makes them viewable, then it may work, however, large images reduced in resolution by web browsers (even though it is still at full resolution as a file) also suffer image quality reductions...they look unfocused in some ways.

Regardless, I will begin the project and let you know when I have something to share.

Thanks for your help via this thread and the interest, PIK. :)

EDIT:

3) Also, I have processed my photos to be optimal for my printer, thus, they may not be as appealing when viewed via a monitor. This is something that would be a HUGE project in order to display my full intent via web.

FYI Kinkos scans and then compresses in jpeg. 600 dpi though.  We are paying some dude to scan in Raw for us.  Dropped about a grand so far.

Cool...did not know that. This is great for marketing, but as I noted above, I can be overly anal about image quality. I guess I should just get over it and share even if its not my perfect rendering.

Also note, that I edited above a 3rd issue.

Regardless, I will overcome my anxiety about showing stuff via monitor...promise.

You are.  My memory suxors but you are.  Do you do etsy?
I don't. I started a new career last year and my kids take up most of my time so I never got around to it. Good luck to your wife, sorry I don't have any advice. She's got talent.

Thank you.  Your stuff was pretty great if I remember right.  Kids crush our time too so don't feel bad.

Thanks man. The issue is that my kids actually did 95% of that shark painting. I just did the drawing and some highlights. I love painting with them but it also is extremely stressful watching them destroy palettes and brushes.

My 8 year old paints with my wife every time.  Drives her nuts.  She's getting so good though I may put her stuff up too, lol.

We got some traffic from Siberia today.  Now i'm nervous about hackers.
LOL!

It appears that your door knob staring has taken the visibility a little too wide.

Thus, I would recommend switching to my second method for now,,,it can help to bring the large into better harmony with the details.

Also, pine trees, tundra-scapes and vodka bottle prints may be a good option if this traffic continues. YMMV.

I am keeping an eye on the site. Any new additions potentially coming?

I tend to work in spurts. Take a whole lotta photos...wait a while...process...print the few that make the cut.

Thus, a long time between finished batches.

Not sure how fine art painters operate.

I actually have a few new works that I was supposed to out up yesterday.  Probably today.

I bought that photo book that was recommended in the other thread.  I just take pics for fun, but I probably have 100,000.  I have a couple I really like, but I still need to control light better. I'm looking forward to seeing your stuff.

So we sold two originals yesterday.  We seem to be way ahead of most newbies traffic wise.  It has to be because of my facebook giving it the original push.  We learned the hard way that it's better to drip things out then to put everything on ETSY all at once.  Drip adds bring traffic.

Also, anything with an ocean and boats seem to be very popular.  You may want to take some photos like that when you start your ETSY @Man of Constant Sorrow.

Ocean scenes are tough to come by in KY, but Louisville is a river town, so I try to get a fair share of that.

Some of my favorites are night time bridge & downtown scenes on the waterfront.

Regarding the book, was is the Bryan Patterson one? If so, he is really good in helping with light.

Great work on the sales & hits.

I will try to post at least a few photos this weekend even if I have to shrink them for Web optimization.

Riverboat pics under a bridge could be cool.

Yes, the Patterson book.

I have been working on trying to scan and save her paintings to raw files all day.  So confusing.

Looking forward to seeing your stuff soon.

Just checked the site. The abstract sunrise/sunset on the ocean looks new...as well as the 2 abstract "seaweed" ones. But, my favorite new one is the abstract "cell biology" one. It has a fractal geometry look to it, without the little details of course, but this gives it an impressionist view of fractals imo.

This, I have. I will try to get it up by the weekend.

Big  from me. I think you will like it.

I accidentally made a black and white print of that one when I was messing around and it was pretty cool.

She did a couple more of Watch Hill yesterday including the view from the road behind Taylor Swifts house.  It should be up in a couple of days.
