Anyone own a 4K Television (1 Viewer)

I just want to make sure it’s a high quality TV. Several years ago we bought a very nicely priced Vizio for the living room and it’s pretty meh-  especially for sports. It’s fine because my wife watches that one more and she doesn’t give a crap about picture quality. It’s fine for watching Top Chef or a Michigan game together but for movies and when we have friends over for a big sporting event in the future, I want to be fully satisfied with the quality.

 You asked why the TV wasn't on the furniture?
Lmao.   No I got it. Yes earlier when you were talking the increments and you mentioned the wheels and stuff. I didn't realize your were talking about the stand it's currently on. I was crossing a couple posts

I understand why you are using the stand instead of the "tv included stand/feet"

:)

i knew I was missing a reason, why I said it was a dumb question!!!

I’m sure this was covered and I will read back but OLED TVs are the most expensive. Is it with the money vs QLED?

Well Hawks was pretty big.  So it would have been fine ;)
Well except for the fact of the center channel...but details right?

ETA actually it wouldn't have fit because with the feet it's about 6-8" wider, you have to put the feet on backwards and it looks ridiculous.

Best Buy has the 75" Samsung Q90T on sale for $2599 ($100) less than the Q80T

Q90T

Q80T

It doesn;'t look like there is much difference, but the Q90T does rate slightly higher than the Q80T on rtings.com

OLED is definitely a better picture.  whether its worth the $$$ depends on the individual I guess.

Another question that’s more TV adjacent. I’m going to get a new 7.1 receiver. I have a 5.1 Onkyo now with JBL speakers. Would I want to keep those speakers and just add 2 more or has the quality of speakers changed a ton? These are 20 years old but they were pretty high quality at the time and still sound good imo.

If you have the cash and want to upgrade sure, if you're happy with it then keep them. Also, if you like them with Onkyo you may not like them as much with a different receiver, there can be a big difference in how the amps sounds.

And what are you going to run with 7.1? Atoms? There a bunch of varieties out there. Some sit on top of the speaker and reflect off the ceiling and some are mounted as height. I'm in the camp of height vs reflection but it's really what you like best, might be good if you can go listen to the differences at a local audio place.

Those definitely seem to be the best values. Thanks
I got the H9G, and the picture is incredible. I mostly chose the H9G over the TCL because the feet of the stand on the Hisense were closer together, so it would fit on my entertainment center.

Ok sounds like to me it makes sense not make a speaker upgrade a low priority on the list. Maybe the last thing I get around to replacing. I just wanted to make sure there wasn’t some new tech in speakers that would make the new receiver a waste of money if hooked into older speakers.

As for the 7.1, I need to do more research. I literally just decided I would do this yesterday evening as I have all this vacation money and restaurant money that I didn’t get to spend in 2020. I’ll take any recommendations or links people want to share.

I went with 2 front height speakers for my 7.1 setup as well.     Nothing earth shattering, but just gives a bit more full sound from things going on above the screen.....think like rain falling from sky, planes taking off and landing, helicopters flying overhead.

You put the 2 fronts directly above the 2 lowers....place them as close to the ceiling as you can.

It depends on budget and honestly I used to always recommend a certain speaker or receiver/amp. However, with the differences in how each piece of equipment can alter the sound I would always recommend going to listen in person if at all possible. And hopefully you're looking at stuff that allows an in home 30 day trial. As far as brands, I'd stick with Onkyo since you like that with your speakers.

My example, and I'm pretty picky about audio so take that into account. I had a 5.1 Paradigm Monitor set being fed by a Rotel Amp and Rotel Preamp Processor. I wanted to upgrade the Pre/Pro to take advantage of new surround technology so I bought an Oknyo receiver with pre-outs that I fed into my Rotel Amp. I absolutely HATED the sound, not sure what Onkyo does differently than Rotel but it was huge negative difference for me. I then swapped out the Onkyo with a Denon and loved it again. I'm not using a Marantz paired with that same Rotel amp and now using GoldenEar Triton two speakers.

TL;DR is upgrading for the sake of upgrading sometimes winds up sucking if you love your gear.

I see what you guys mean about the Atmos set-up. So I would really need 4 more speakers. 2 side speakers and 2 either ceiling mounted or special atmos ones that reflect to do a 7.1.2. My wife is going to love how much louder this will be than the current set-up.

If you're 5.1 you should only need 2 more, unless you want rear, sides and height.

The shock and horror of seeing this thread and getting excited, thinking "4K, yeah I've been wanting one of these" and then glancing over and seeing this thread is 7 years old from 2013

So there's 8k, when is 16k get here or should I be holding off until we get 32-Bit action on these Television Sets?

Thanks for your time, I appreciate it. Obviously now I have the center, sub, l/r and rear l/r. You think the atmos front height speakers in front are more beneficial than adding 2 side speakers?

Atmos height speakers are normally ceiling mounted & downward facing at about the midway point between fronts and rears.

7.1 Dolby Surround are also midway but typically face each other/into the middle of the room and are horizontal facing.

One half way option for Atmos us to mount the "height" speakers on the front wall of the room and have them face outwards into the room. In my experience, it's not a good option.

Well in the new world those rears turn into sides and you add two heights. I don't have personal experience with it but have read from numerous folks that the height make a much bigger difference than rears in any atmos config. Obviously room shape plays a huge part of it. If you can do sides, rears and heights then go for it.

2 ceiling mounted midway --> front heights pointing downward ---> atmos bouncing up ---> sides/rear sides

That's Just my opinion.

I upgraded my front heights and couldn't mount on ceiling.  So they tilt downward on the front wall. Definitely make a difference and definitely love them. Ymmv

I had a Panasonic plasma that was 12 and a half years old. Thing was a OAK. Never a problem. 720p

Still going strong but I donated it to Goodwill. 12 and a half years is long enough! I bought a new OLED.
I am always way behind on tech.  Cheaper that way I guess.   I know the tvs are cheap, but a bit for me is having trash internet and doubting being able to stream 4k + hitting the point that i don't want to buy my movie collectionyet again so I have it in 4k.

I hear ya, my Samsung pn64f8500 is 7 yrs old and still rocks.  Not one issue, was one of the best TV’s on the market at the time. I’m itching to upgrade to a 75+ inch so I might soon but this bad boy just keeps trucking along.

A/B compared Back To The Future on 4k Disc versus 4k Streaming...I THINK I noticed the difference but can't be sure it wasn't confirmation bias.

I'd guess four out of five people wouldn't notice a difference most of the time.

If you're internet is good enough you it should be hard to notice. I don't notice much at all streaming 4K from my NAS vs 4k from Netflix/Amazon/etc.

I will say that if you aren't using a dedicated device to stream ie not using the TV apps, you're missing a ton. I use a Nvidia Shield Pro and man the AI upscaling is phenomenal as is the native 4k streaming. I was using an Amazon Fire TV 4k and it's pretty much crap compared to the Nvidia. I was really surprised.

Now why'd you have to go and tell me that? I had been looking at getting an Nvidia but I thought "Nah, it can't really be better, can it?"

It is. I was shocked honestly. I got it because the Amazon Fire had all sorts of buffering and audio issues with streaming from the NAS. Zero issues with the Shield.

Yep Costco TV sales have started!  I just bought the Samsung 75" QLED Q8DT series.  It was on sale for $400 off at $2,199.  I had my eyes on this model for a while so with the price drop now was the time to buy.  Comes with a three year warranty as well.

The OLED sale just went live at Costco and I just ordered this 65" CX model for $1850 plus tax and it includes a 3 year extended warranty.  This is my first upgrade in 14 years, coming from a DLP so looking forward to it!

That’s super tempting. Might have to pull the trigger. My Panasonic Plasma (1080) still looks fantastic imo but I just wish it was higher (47). Feels like time to upgrade everything. I need to find somewhere to put the plasma though, no way I can toss it.’ The Picture is better than the much newer Vizio LED I have in my living room.

After debating between 1 75" or 2 60" in the basement, I have decided to go with the 1 big one.  It will mainly be used for kids gaming and TV when they have their buddies over because it will be a while before they are out of the house and I get my man cave.  Best Buy has a couple right now at a good price for pre black friday and wondering if anyone has experience with either:

I know neither one is top line, but at this time I am not looking to spend a bunch because it will mainly be boys TV for games with the occasional sports.

I have 2 TCL TVs, a smaller one in the bedroom and one outside for the patio. They look fine, work well, the smart TV setup is easy to use. They would be great for what you are going for.

I have two Panasonic Plasmas. Replaced my 46" in my living room with a 55" OLED LG C9 and it really is an upgrade.

The brightness is the one thing that really stands out. Moved the plasma to my daughters room.

So now I have a 60" plasma in my basement that I consider replacing everyday. Ugh.

2 years after buying my 65" Sony XBR900E, I am kicking myself for not putting up the extra dough for an LG OLED. Regret it at least every other day.

That’s good to hear. I’m going back and forth right now on whether to go for broke on the $1900 LG or save some cash and get an even bigger Hisense

I was in the same boat last year. I went bigger and don't regret it at all. Going from two plasmas so 4k was an incredible upgrade. Add in I only spent 1400 I won't feel like I wasted cash if I upgrade in another year or two?

Just took the plunge on the Costco deal for the 65' LG 4K OLED and Denon receiver. Just need the 4k player and 2 more height speakers and I will fully be in business.

I really wish they’d start making OLEDs in smaller sizes.  Once you watch one, it’s hard to go back to LCDs
Got a 48” and installed it in our main TV room recently. Was waiting because the cutout over the fireplace wouldn’t accommodate anything bigger.  Love it.
