He's completely uneducated though. I can get 4k content from my cable provider (assuming that's what he was talking about) not too mention that most streaming providers are 4k and HDR/Dolby Vision even (HBO Max isn't).

There is some truth to what he says but he delivered the message wrong.
Here xfinity is still compressed a little too much pending on the channel. If you compare to say a blu-ray you will get a better picture overall on the blu-ray. But the show room settings are terrible for sure

Get a nice TV stand that can hide away all the extra equipment, look into switching to bookshelf front on stands and it can really make the front feel a lot nicer. I was going to recommend checking out standout designs, but unfortunately I just realized they closed due to COVID, really sad because they made a great product for home theater stuff, TONS of storage, and were one of the few companies that could support larger center channels in the cabinet. After that you can look at in ceiling/in wall surrounds if that's an option where you are. I did full in ceiling surrounds from Triad Speakers for my living room (because that's the only tv room I have, small house) and it really opens stuff up and avoids that "cluttered" feeling.
I couldn't imagine moving my full high end setup to a soundbar after I've had some level of home theater for probably the last 25 years.

Yeah, but those TV demo reels are insane and I think that's what he was talking about. Those are designed to perfectly show off the TV and with normal broadcasts, hell even most movies, you won't hit that wow factor that those demo reels give you. 100% agree the store settings are crap, but the higher end demo reels like the ones they show on the OLED's are amazing. Hell even my wife stops to look twice at some of those things, and she could care less about TVs.

It's currently sitting on a piece of cardboard on my basement floor. Looking for a decent stand to place it on.
Any new piece of equipment has Star Wars: A New Hope played on it for it's test run. There were about a dozen details I noticed last night that I've never seen before - and that's a movie I've seen...more times than I can count.
Right away, I saw cracks in C-3PO's paint job that were never visible before. When Luke turns on his lightsaber for the first time, the blue color is actually reflected in his eyes!
I won't miss my projector at all.

Salamander Designs has some nice stuff, I think some here have used them. I found it really hard to find good large size TV stands in normal stores, but if you are really going light equipment now, may be easier.

So I have been looking and need some help. Costco has 2 TVs at about the same price and I am not sure which is the better choice.
Samsung Q8DT $2600 -75"
Sony X90CH $2750 -85"
The Samsung picture looks a lot better in the store, but I think a lot of that has to do with demos they are running. Which do you go with - Size or Quality?

In short, I love it. Only watched two movies on it so far (A New Hope & The Shining) but both looked great. I can only imagine what something more recent like John Wick will look like.
Just IMO, I don't know if you'd sit in front of the 85" Sony and think to yourself "boy, this would be more enjoyable if it was slightly higher resolution but ten inches smaller."
In other words, if you want an 85" TV you're not going to be disappointed with the Sony, I don't think.

Man I'd go with the Sony 85" all day every day. I have a TCL 75" and think an 85" would be next level.
Rtings comparison look very similar in ratings outside of reflections.

Got a good deal ($600) and I liked the sound. I kept my Definitive sub and the Bluesound has a sub out.
I hadn't ever heard of the brand before yesterday. The hifi shop had a demo unit and it sounded great with music (like, really good) so I took it home to give it a try. I liked it with movie sound too so I'll likely keep it.
Operating it is kind of dumb - it's mostly through an app. But it does have an ARC connector, as does my TV, so I can at least control the volume with the TV remote.

That's awesome and one of the only good uses of ARC. ARC sucks bad when you have a receiver and multiple things that need to turn on off, etc.
ARC stands for audio return channel. It doesn't turn things on and off. I think you're thinking of CEC. Here is a primer:

Question about buying a soundbar and bouncing off walls etc.
The main living area is basically one giant rectangle (17'x26'). So the TV and couch will be in 1/2 the room. The ceiling is low throughout.
Will a soundbar for something like dolby atmos be wasted in this space since one of the walls is so far away? Do I need something with dedicated rear speakers in order to create the best listening environment?

I'm of the opinion that direct facing speakers are always the best, atmos at height instead of bouncing off the ceiling etc. However, everyone's tastes are different so you may like it. I'd find one you can try at home and see if you like it or not. The one @Andy Dufresne linked has wireless rear speakers, but he is just using the base soundbar with sub. He was able to do a try and buy and came from direct facing speakers IIRC.

I definitely agree with direct speakers being best, but I definitely enjoy the simplicity of a sound bar. Hell I'll be happy with just a 5.1 setup as long as it was wireless. I was just wondering if the Sonos Arc would be worthwhile with the room dimensions/TV setup.

Lots of factors there based on what's in the room and seating etc. My guess based on saying the couch and TV will be in 1/2 the room the furthest you'll be is 13'. With a good sub I think you'll be fine, but the only way to know is to try them. If you want the simplicity and ease I'd do it. Based on Andy's recommendation of the Bluesound I'd see if there was a dealer near that I could go and listen and have try and buy.

Which wall is the couch facing, the 17' or the 26'?
Sounds like it's the 26' so your couch would be at the far end of the rectangle. In that case, and my room is similar, you will get a lot of sound that is lost out the open side.
The sound bar I bought isn't Atmos but has a "wide" setting that is actually pretty good and effective. But it does lose sound and makes it sound unbalanced. It's also why I had to adjust the levels of each speaker when I was running a 5.1 setup. Personally, I'm just going to live with it because the furniture just doesn't work otherwise.
If you can face the short wall OTOH I think you'll get a pretty decent sound if you used an Atmos bar since the room would be more symmetrical to the sound.
Hope that makes some sense.

We are actually facing the short wall, but what I mean using 1/2 the room is the TV/couch will be "centered" to a 17'x13' area to the left. So the right side would be 26' feet away.
Would the sound bar still provide symmetrical sound in this case?

So I think you're saying that half the room will be behind the couch. And that there will be roughly equal distance to both the left and right sides of the couch/speaker. If that's so, then I think the sound will be good.
Short story is that it's the left/right walls that are more more important than the front/back.

Sorry I suck at explaining. The "TV area" will be the left side of the room (the right dining area). LEFT wall will be about 7' from TV center. RIGHT wall will be about 19' from TV center. Sofa positioned 13' in front with 4' behind.
From your explanation it seems like the asymmetry between the left and right walls will be an issue.

Disappointed in the Prime Day sales so far.
I've been watching for the 65" TCL 6 Series or Sony X900H to go on sale, but nothing so far. Best Buy is guaranteeing $1000 as a Black Friday price for the Sony.
Are $900 and $1000 reasonable sales prices for these sets, or should I continue to monitor? This is a want, not a need, so I can probably convince myself to wait for a deal.
I've been watching for the 65" TCL 6 Series or Sony X900H to go on sale, but nothing so far. Best Buy is guaranteeing $1000 as a Black Friday price for the Sony.

Costco has the Samsung Q6DT 85" for $1699 which is $500 less than yesterday. I know it is a little older than the Q8DT, but at half the price it might be worth it. Any thoughts?
It will be replacing a 60", 5year old Visio so it should be a step up regardless.

At $1700 that's a little steep for me right now since I just jumped ship from the day job to be my own boss and now get the luxury of paying more than my house payment a month on health insurance starting in November. Thanks Obama.
So back to the TCL since the 65 inch Samsung is only like $50 off. TCL 6 series 65 inch is either $799 or $899. The $899 I assumed was the newer year model. I'm VERY happy with last year's 75 inch 6 series I'm watching right now. But the extra $100 is because it is Mini LED over the cheaper model which is just QLED. Is the Mini LED worth the extra $100 over QLED.

Yes/No depending on who is doing the review. Rtings has it at a 7.9 while Cnet has it at an 8.8. Cnet has typically been a pretty huge fan of TCL and Rtings is much more focused on the test data, which they do more of it seems.TheFanatic said:
