Anything new out of the Redskins camp regarding Portis? (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
Well, I drafted Portis at 1.09 in a startup dynasty league about a month and a half ago. Since then, the pick seems to be looking worse and worse every day!! I am seeing him consistantly in the middle of the second round... So, does anybody out there have any (bad or good) information on Portis out of the skins camp??? I sure am hoping the old Portis emerges! IF this guy can stay healthy I think he is still a force...BUT now Betts is in the picture! :bag:

here is something from 8-3. Not much info though.

Portis update: Running back Clinton Portis likely will be limited for the time being because of his knee. He'll do cardio work, riding the bike, etc., and lift weights. The guessing game is already on as to when he'll play in an exhibition game.

I'm a big Portis fan, finally traded him away in my league after 4 interesting years...I don't know if I'd say "now Betts is in the picture"...he has been for the last year and a half...but I do still think Portis is one of the bigger upside guys available right now...at least at his 2nd round ADP...at 1.09 I hope you backed him up in the 2nd with someone much more stable and reliable...

I'm a Portis owner and I feel like we are going to be in for a season of "Questionable" on the injury report.

Not practicing alot during the week in an effort to get the knee pain to go away. Then takes a cortisone shot and goes out there and plays on Sundays.

I was reading in another Portis thread that his biggest injury concern is not in his knee itself but rather in the surrounding muscles which will be picking up some of its slack. I can't remember who said it but he seemed knowledgeable.

I agree that if Portis can get and stay healthy he has enormous upside this year, but it scares the crap out of me to be completely honest.

Word was, last year, that the Skins would NEVER play Portis in a pre-season game again because of what happened. So, him not playing, that doesn't really tell us anything about his injury status.

Well like many other Portis owners I have a lot riding on him... If he performs I like my RB combination of him and T. Henry... Without Portis I think I may be in trouble... My other RBs are in Team #1 below...

 Portis won't play much if at all in preseason. I think the tendinitis is real injury, but the skins will milk it to the press so they can justify him sitting out.A ton of the NFL studs get reported to have minor injuries all preseason (especially early in the preseason) so the fans/media can't complain when they don't play.Preseason means nothing to established vets, it's for the 2nd and later strings and for the 1st string to get some timing and flow down.Your not going to gain any insight on the established vets in preseason.

the knee is the least of his worries! While it is something to be concerned about, he hasn't even taken a shot to that surgically repaired shoulder yet..thats when the fun begins..

if the muscles around the knee are weak, I would think he is more prone to a serious knee injury, no?

I'd be as worried about Portis as I would be about Gore..both carry considerable risk to fantasy GM's.

Betts is the money play here... :goodposting:

Don Banks reporting...

1. Make no mistake, even though the Redskins found out that they had two No. 1-caliber running backs last season with the breakthrough year turned in by Ladell Betts, there's no confusion about Clinton Portis being the starter if he's healthy in 2007. Gibbs and associate head coach/offense Al Saunders were very clear in telling me that Betts is the backup, even if he did run for 1,154 yards in nine starts last season, including a team-record tying five consecutive 100-yard rushing games (all after Thanksgiving).

The playoffs were filled last year with teams that featured a two-back approach to their running game, and the Redskins see the value in making sure Betts regularly spells Portis, who endured an injury-shortened season in 2006 (he hurt his shoulder in the preseason and broke a hand in Week 9). But while Washington plans on re-dedicating itself to the power running game that Gibbs loves this season, in order to take some of the load off young quarterback Jason Campbell, no one within the organization is expecting the Redskins to wind up with a pair of 1,000-yard rushers.

The scenario Washington would like to see is Portis finishing in the 1,500-yard range, with Betts totaling between 600-700 yards. The Redskins awarded Betts a five-year, $11 million contract extension in December, and that's a sizable deal for a No. 2 back. Washington just hopes it's an insurance policy it doesn't need like it did last year. But stay tuned, because Portis is currently sidelined with tendinitis in his right knee, the same injury that kept him out of a mid-June minicamp.

I'm a big fan of Portis' upside this year, but this is making me nervous. I'm more concerned about injury than I was before, but that's not the biggest problem. The biggest problem with drafting Portis early is that the price of Betts will keep going up with every preseason game he misses. I wouldn't want Portis without Betts.

I've been to 4 of the open training camp practices. Portis looks very solid. His speed is flat out amazing. But he isn't participating in contact drills that I saw.

Him and Gibbs are acting like best friends. They ham it up after practice is over. They fake race each other at the end of every practice I've seen, and coach always wins...then heads over to sign hoards of autographs.

Even Betts isn't getting many carries in the contact drills. They seem to be checking out the younger RBs. Almost like they are looking for a good blocking back for the future...probably to replace Cartwright down the line.
