Are Joe Burrow and the Bengals here to stay as a Super Bowl contender? (1 Viewer)

Yeah, this is a realm he has not entered.

It will be fascinating to watch. Brown has already cost himself money by waiting.

I'm just working on the theory that the last QB to sign will have the larger contract since they keep getting bigger and bigger.
The reason that the last QB to sign will have the larger contract is because the best QB waits until last to sign.

I would wager that Brown had very little say in waiting, Burrow and his camp almost certainly wanted to see what the others got first.
Oh, of course. And Brown may have tried to get him signed earlier than we think.

I guess this will be the test of Burrow and how he wants to structure this deal to help the team keep the core. I'm guessing his representation is looking at Mahomes contract closely. But at some point that contract gets up into the percentage of the cap test that starts to restrict the entire roster.

Mahomes took up 17% of the cap last year, making it the largest percentage of a Super Bowl winning QB in history.

I hope the Bengals get it done with him. Love this rivalry and want to see it continue.
But then why has he "already cost himself money by waiting" if it wasn't really his choice? I guess I just don't get why he's getting any blame here (yet) considering nothing has occurred that's even remotely out of the ordinary. He seems like a clown and may end up screwing things up but he hasn't even had the opportunity to do so yet.

Agreed, it's a delicate balance between "getting yours" and leaving enough to put a good team around you. He has already said that he wants to keep his teammates who are close/due extensions a focal point, so it will be interesting to see the final outcome.
Yeah, that is is where I'm at. Nothing that has (or hasn't) happened yet tells me anything good or bad. A little trigger happy.

And we're back again

-I didn't know that the Bengals did not have an indoor practice facility and only at the insistence of Joe Burrow Year 2 did they finally put one in
They screwed around with Burrow all the way until almost the start of the season, he injured his calf in camp and then his season took an abrupt end
Chase has had very little work vs what a full training camp would be like for him

Do the Bengals not understand the going rate for Wide Receivers?

The Bengals have been one of the worst run franchises in any sport ever. Not bottom of the barrel enough to force a change in ownership, just consistently awful.

The Bengals understand the going rate. Some players don't understand contracts.

I think the window is closing fast after this year. Hendrickson and Hubbard are both getting older and they have no replacement. The offensive line is getting older and are not that great to begin with. They need to start drafting starters if they want to keep competing.

They always start slow under Zac Taylor. I can’t believe no one in the organization has noticed this pattern and done something about it.

And the Bengals continue to show their true stripes time and time again
They really can't pay the going rate on Wide Receivers be it Chase or Higgins

Franchise Tag Twice?!

Franchise tag is defined by the going rate.

ETA: If they were franchise tagging Chase two years in a row, that would be different. He's still under contract but his extension is coming.

If they want him so bad (Higgins) why not just get a contract done? I'd be looking for better pastures.
I think the tag is the right move with Higgins. He's a good WR, but you'd like to see him stay healthy before committing long-term. I don't know, I don't see the issue.

They weren't paying Chase, Higgins and Hendrickson (and Burrow). I take this to mean retaining Higgins is a priority, and they feel if they can keep the offensive skill players together and just improve the D (and Oline) a little, they can be contenders again.

I still don't understand how bad their D is since they have some decent or emerging talent (Ossai, BJ Hill, maybe Murphy, Pratt, Battle and Stone at safety).

Ossai is supposed to be a rising player but got a lousy PFF grade (I roster him in dynasty so I was bummed). I think Pratt has asked for a trade.

3/25.5 contract for Gesicki.

Not a big fan of that one, I feel like Burrow can make basically any TE look good in that offense, and Gesicki has proven to be a middling player. Its not big money, but its not for a particularly good player either.

That's not so great. I wonder what the contract looks like for real.

You wonder if they couldn't have just traded for Goedert, who has the added bonus of being a good blocker.

More bad contract news for Bengals today with Garrett getting 40, DK getting 33. Good luck on Chase and Higgins getting a penny less than those, respectively.

The mistake of not signing Chase last year and Higgins sooner is going to be one of the biggest mistakes they have ever made. Each day is costing them more money that they claim not to have.

I don't understand why at the very least they didn't lock Chase up long-term. I can understand not wanting to pay two guys top of the market money, but you know Chase is a bona fide top 3 WR in the league for at least the next 5 years. Charge an extra dollar for hot dogs at the stadium if you have to.

They obviously have been consulting Jerry Jones on how to conduct contact negotiations.

BREAKING: #Bengals WRs Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins exclusively tell me they’ve agreed to contract extensions with the team.

Ja'Marr gets: 4-years, $161M with $112M guaranteed — making him the highest-paid non-QB in NFL history.

Tee gets: 4-years, $115M with the first two years guaranteed — making him the highest paid WR2 in NFL history.

45% of salary cap on the top 3 offensive players. Makes it tough to field a team beyond that. But, it is an epic trio, very glad to keep them around. Could be a lot of fun for the next few years if we can get enough cheap, scrappy guys to make up the defense and o-line.

ETA: Granted I don't know how the contracts are structured, and how the "cap hit" works and all that. Just going by annual average salary.

Show me a defense, and I'll show you a team that isn't the Cincinnati Bengals. Until they start addressing that side of the ball with the seriousness it demands, they'll continue to be a team that's all offense and no defense. Perfect for fantasy football!

I think Higgins contract is something they can trade out of, its not a wild contract. But Burrow would cry, so it likely wont happen, not for a couple years anyway.

I suspect Burrow will adjust his salary if needed. I believe he's mentioned that in the past.

If I were them, I'd go OL-heavy in the draft. Can they win a Super Bowl? Absolutely...they could easily be the highest scoring team in the league. They'll need a few guys to come out of the woodwork on D, but it's possible.
