AT40 - This Week in 1974 (1 Viewer)

12. "T.S.O.P." - M.F.S.B.

This was the point when Philly soul usurped Motown as the Sound Of Young America.

10. "Lord's Prayer" - Sister Janet Mead

I think this is Sister Jean in disguise. She done tore her bracket sheets up. Go on, Loyola-Chicago!

Great thread! :pickle:

Would be cool to have a link to the song in YouTube or something, since some of us don't remember some of these!!

8. "Come & Get Your Love" - Redbone

Look up "kicks every kind of ###" in the dictionary, and this record pops up.

I'd love to provide links, but I'm listening in real time and most of these songs are under 3 minutes.

Plus, I'm doing laundry :bag:

6. "Mockingbird" - Carly & James Taylor.

I hate this record with the heat of a thousand suns. It's up there with "Sugar Shack" and "Seasons In The Sun". This is a horrible record and if any of you chime in to say you like it, I will have you banned from this board.

    My personal #2 on this countdown behind Until You Come Back To Me by Aretha.

For you Marvel fans lurking... this is the song Star-Lord is dancing/evading traps to in an early scene in the first Guardians Of The Galaxy.

5. "Dark Lady" - Cher

Better than that awful "Mockingbird" crap at #6, with James ####### Taylor trying to sound like a black guy. Jesus, I may never get over hearing that damned thing again.

4. "Bennie & The Jets" - Elton John

This is probably my least favorite of Elton's big hits, but it got him on Soul Train.

3. "Seasons In The Sun" - Terry Jacks

:X :hot:  :X

I'll pay for the plane flight if one of you want to fly here to put me out of my misery.

“When I hear this song it makes me wish I was deaf instead of blind.” - something Stevie Wonder is probably too full of love to even think, much less say out loud

now, everybody have you heard

they made a song from a flaming turd

and if that flaming turd wont light

James & Carly will find other ways to bite

o-yes-indeed-o

1. "Sunshine On My Shoulders" - John Denver

Better than ####### "Mockingbird". God, I feel like I want to puke.

This is actually a pretty good song, though it's whitebread-as-hell.

I can never tell if you're agreeing with me or not

The night “We Are The World” was recorded and all those great American vocalists from the 60s/70s/80s were in the same studio... Paul Simon looked around and joked, “if a bomb drops on this place, John Denver is back on top.”

That's rich coming from that uptight little #######.

But, it IS funny

i agree, yes-indeed-o, yo, yes-indeed-o, yeah, yeah, wo wo wo wo wo now
dude must've had one hell of a ####, 'cause Carly was perhaps the finest lady on the scene there for awhile ... he's an insufferable twit, and that song ... that ####### song - the nadir.

21. "Mighty Love" - Spinners

Philly Soul running on high octane fuel.
omg - what a song.  I'm posting to make it easy for people to check it out if they haven't heard it - or doesn't ring a bell.  I liked it when it came out, but was so into other stuff than Motown I didn't pay enough attention.  Knowing how much my hero, Todd Rundgren, grew up with the Philly sound he also covered this song on his A Cappella album, where he did all the vocals and no instruments  - this is where it really hit me.  I love both versions.

Spinners - Might Love

A Cappella is a 1985 album by Todd Rundgren. The album is one of Rundgren's most unusual in that every sound is the product of the artist's voice. Rundgren employed overdubbing techniques and an E-mu Emulator (an early sampler), electronically manipulating the sound of his voice in order to mimic conventional rock instruments, handclaps, and other sounds.[4] This unique approach to music making was later explored by artists such as Mike Patton and Björk.

Thanks for this list UH.  Good top 40 music in '74, but it was also in a time where album music was maturing and so different than what was on top 40 radio.

I have heard that averages say that an adult male's favorite music comes from when they were around 14.  Like otb here - this is a wheelhouse area.

ETA:  already rabbit-holing youtube songs from then.

40. "Dancing Machine" - Jackson Five

This ain't nothing BUT groove. The closest Michael and the rest ever came to gut-bucket funk. Also, I think this is the song Michael broke out the robot dance on.
This is, probably unsurprisingly, my favorite song of the countdown save for anything by the Spinners, even though I haven't heard that particular song. Thanks for doing the countdown, Uruk. Never in my wheelhouse, and therefore, always interesting.

Great list this time... And I remember a lot of these (I was six, so more a Seasons in the Sun target audience)

32. "Let It Ride" - BTO

When I first heard this, I thought these guys were black. I have no idea why, as they were the pastiest-of-pasty white guys from Canada.

Don't care - this ####### record rocks, boys & girls.
I remember finding out much later that BTO rose from the ashes of The Guess Who. Pretty much a  "Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings?"  moment for kids across Canada.

You have to love Fred Turner's gravelly vocals.
