Auction league, which do you prefer? (1 Viewer)

Reading the QBBC article got me thinking. There are some great values out there after the big 5 or 6 are off the board. With a $200 cap you are getting some QBs that people have been raving about for under $10 for the AAP(avg auc. price).

In a PPR league where there are 6pt passing TDs would you prefer Stud QB and paying the premium(over $20)?(manning,bulger,palmer,brees,brady,dnabb)

Or the QBBC route of the lesser names that are going at or under the $10 mark?

Personally Im thinking of loading up on WR and RBs while settling for cheaper QBs. However the 6pt passing TDs are the only thing detering me from a more proven StudQB

I've had QBBC go a few different ways on me.

One year I had Gannon, Garcia, and Griese when they all blew up and it was great.

But more years than that I end up with some crappy QB's I end up regretting.

At this point I'm shooting for a pretty solid 2nd tier guy that I would basically start week in and week out and a backup or two who's schedules match up well when my #1 has a bye or a real tough matchup.

I'm a big fan of DBC and use it all the time with good results.

I usually try to spend as little as possible for a QB, and spend a great portion of my auction $ on RBs and WRs. We are in a ten team league, so the law of averages dictates that if each team takes 2 QBs, you will get a good QB value. A couple guys will end up taking 3 QBs, but that still means there will be at least 7 starting QBs that will not be selected. So I am fine with spending $5-10-15 for a guy like Farve, Delhomme, Alex Smith, Roethlisburger. I have even seen Matt Hasselback ranked about 12-14, which in our league is about a $15 player (and a great bargain)!

the difference between 4pts for a passing td and 6pts for one is so minuscule that it really doesn't matter(after all it is relative, even the sucky QBs get 6pts for their tds too)...with that said in a draft i always wait on QBs(usually drafting mine after someone else has a backup)...in an auction it would depend on who i have targeted at other positions and if i was able to get what i consider bargains.

Actually, it does make a decent difference.

I have a spreadsheet of statistical projections, which can adjust to your league scoring. In my money league with 6-point passing TDs, Manning rates as the #7 overall player. Then it has Brady #16, McNabb #20, Palmer #23, Brees and VY tied at #32, and Rivers at #43.

If I keep everything else exactly the same, and switch to 4-point passing TDs, you get the following: Manning #14, Brady #24, McNabb #25, Palmer and VY tied at #28, and Brees at #48.

So, with 4 points, there is 1 fewer QB in the top 50, and all the QBs get bumped downward quite a bit except VY obviously.

What my friend does in his auction league, actually, is rather unique and IMO a much better way to increase QB value than 6-point TDs. He makes passing TDs 3 points and turnovers -3 points...but gives 1 point per completion and -1 for every incomplete, thus rewarding accuracy. He also uses 4-point rushing TDs and 6-point receiving TDs.

When I plug his whole system into the spreadsheet, here's what it says: Manning #6, Brady #11, Palmer #16, Rivers #32, McNabb #33, Brees #38, and Hasselbeck #41. So that's 7 QBs in top 50 just as with the 6-point passing TDs, but most of them rank higher this way. And completion percentage is more consistent from game to game and year to year than TDs, so it reduces the amount of luck involved.

I played in his league for the first time last year, and I loved it and would highly recommend such a scoring system to anyone!

Now, as to QB drafting, this looks like a year where you have to nab an upper-tier starter. McNabb looks like a great target to me, as does VY in run-heavy leagues and Rivers/Hasselbeck in the scoring described above. Intriguing backup QBs you may be able to get cheap include Roethlisberger (a rock-solid bet for top 10 IMO), Leftwich (no controversy anymore), Losman (got better as the season went on), and Leinart (2nd year usually means big improvements, which is also why I like VY). Cutler and Alex Smith also have some upside but are limited by their run-heavy offenses. And Kitna would make an AWESOME backup to play matchups with, but it seems some guy in every league falls in love with him.

and its all relative to the position, i could care less how many QBs score in the top 50(in start 1 leagues) cause I will only be starting ONE, and with that said the difference of 4pts vs 6pts doesnt create enough of a disparity between the QBs for it to mattercan you supply the points scored for manning at #7 vs rivers at #43 and then supply the manning at #14 and brees at #48 numbers(just curious)

I bought into the "you can get good enough QBs at a discount later" strat several yrs running. Last year my passing game killed my playoff shots (WITH LT on one team even) thanks to the likes of 2d/3d tier QB (on draft day) like Bledsoe, Delhomme, E Manning etc. Yeah great bargains, what a strat.

Not. I'm determined to get a top 3 QB this year.
