I'm not sure how many people know about this but it's a pretty nice trick.
This guide is for Windows 7 but it will work for Windows 8 also. What it does is on startup it automatically logs you in so that your desktop and startup programs begin to load then it automatically locks your computer. It's nice because you can just hit the power button, go to the bathroom or whatever, type in your password and everything's fully loaded.
There's about a 3-5 second delay between auto-login and auto-lock using this method. On my old XP I had a similar setup with no delay but I can't get that working on Windows 8.
