Back to the 80s Movies: Top 100...1st 30 entries are up (1 Viewer)

This is absolutely what I was hoping for. Lots of folks who want to chime in with their own, go for it.

I will keep rolling mine out over the next week or two but like many of you I work and just cannot spend 24/7 doing a movie thread with a family looking over my shoulder and wondering why I am not making them laugh with my corny 80s jokes.

I knew at least a few would have a much better working knowledge of these 80s films. I already have seen a couple I overlooked and will scoot them in somewhere. Hope everyone is enjoying a stellar weekend.

Cheers amigos!

digging Todem's lists and like that he's put himself in the "back then" mode to rank things. definitely movies I saw as a kid in the 80s that I liked/loved but that don't really hold up for me now- my lists have been in the what have you don't for me lately mode, but i'll try to include some of the ones I liked back then too.

1986

Down by Law- my favorite Jim Jarmusch. a tolerable and funny Roberto Benigni matched up with lurie and waits- great cast, great score, and really beautiful film-making. b/w with static camera just framing each scene- no panning or tracking... some of my favorite images are from this.

F/X- really fun action/wtf head-scratcher... or at least it was when I was kid. take the conversation/blow-up idea of an industry insider using their skills to handle things, with special effects. wonder how it holds up.

Hannah and Her Sisters- maybe woody at his best. great performances, solid movie.

Highlander- der cehn be onlee wun. love this.

A Room with a View- first of the merchant ivory period piece things I saw... I think. liked that it blended some humor in there- made me a sucker for the more romantic movies.

Lucas- a girl I knew from HS was in this for her first film (courtney thorne smith)... made seeing it fantastic. don't know that it holds up too well against other HS-loser vs popular kids movies, but I'll always think of being in the theater with a group of friends and staing through the credits to cheer courtney- who was gorgeous AND incredibly genuine and nice. have always been happy to see her success.

My Beautiful Launderette- thought this one was super cool, first time being exposed to overt homosexuality in a pop-culture way... helped make it seem normal, I think. also first time I remember seeing DD Lewis, who was amazing. another one that I wonder if it holds up.

Salvador- probably my favorite Oliver Stone flick. James Woods typically solid, and a crazy story that brought some insight into a country/situation I knew nothing about.

Mona Lisa- remember liking it at the time, but don't remember anyting about it other the Bob Hoskins being fantastic.

Ruthless People- give the bag to bozo. saw part of this recently and it held up, IMO. still funny, especially de Vito was brilliant, and Pullman as the moron.

Big Trouble in Little China- all-timer. love this movie.

She’s Gotta Have it- Spike's first... was hit or miss for me at the time, but could tell he was somebody to watch.

Manhunter- this was my go-to recommended video rental for friends. I think it holds up well, but anthony hopkins and silence of the lambs made it feel a bit made-for-tv.

Stand by Me- fun buddy movie for pre-teens. thought it hit a bunch of the right notes in terms of friendship, relationship to the older world, nature, etc.

Blue Velvet- are there people who don't think is brilliant? maybe lynch's most accessible and crazy, creepy, stunning across the board.

The Name of the Rose- a fun thriller/suspense period piece, with kinda bizarre casting of sean connery and christian slater as italian monks.

Peggy Sue got Married- I'm a big fan of this one and get too easily caught into going back in time daydreams. a gb was nick cage's body double for the last scene in the hospital look in a mirror.

The Mission- beautiful film with a beautiful soundtrack (morricone) about redemption and doing what's right. deniro good as always.

Hoosiers- I can make it. pitch-perfect for the genre- hackman was fantastic, and hopper's over-acting suited the role perfectly.

Betty Blue- I loved this when it came out. loved the look, the sound, the style, the heartbreak and the story. need to see it again. same director as previously mentioned favorite, Diva.

Three Amigos-  ok- it's pretty terrible, but still hilarious to me.

Platoon- I remember being laid out by this in the theater- the scope and subject matter. subsequent viewings have diminished it quite a bit- ham-handed, poorly acted and with some goofy/overt black/white themes on integrity and morals.

Sid & Nancy- love this one. I was a little young to know the story of the sex pistols, even if I was familar with their music. this one told the story so well- oldman just on fire here- and its a crazy story. thought it was able to move beyond the story too- into more mythic dimensions- and do it in a satisfying and eye-catching style. Could be my favorite of the year

1985

1. Back To The Future - I was in sleep-away camp up in the beautiful state of Maine. I was in the first session drama production and as a reward for doing a great job they took the entire cast and crew out to a steak dinner and a movie. It was Back To The Future. I love this movie to this very day. A true classic.

2. Better Off Dead - "I want my two dollars"!!! "This is Franch Fries" Do you celebrate Christmas? "You know Chrissssssmaaaasss"

3. The Breakfast Club - Still holds up to this day. Just great 80's goodness.

4. Day Of The Dead - Universally panned, I happened to have felt it was clearly the class of Romero's Dead Trilogy (which later turned into a crap load of other sequels).

5. Enemy Mine - I loved this film. Dennis Quaid and Louis Gosset Jr killed it in this heart warming sci-fi racial relations story. A gem of a film.

6. Fletch - So many classic scenes, the Beverly Hills Cop rip off music which is a constant part of the retro fun when you re-watch it over and over. Chevy Chase's pinnacle moment....it was all down hill like a snowball from here (and Fletch Lives sucked ###...horrible sequel).

7. Fright Night - Such a gem of a vampire movie. I still watch this film all the time with my son. "Welcome To Fright Night.......for real".

8. The Goonies - Another awesome pre-teen/early tween film. A timeless classic.

9. Jagged Edge - I love this film. Jeff Bridges always gives you everything he has in any film.

10. Weird Science - Another 80's classic, which is quite dated today, but still a guilty pleasure of mine

11. Silver Bullet - One of the best Stephen King adaptions on film. Gary Busey was great as the drunk uncle and Corey Haim gives a great performance as a crippled boy who no one in town believes about a Werewolf running amok.

12. Summer Rental - John Candy in one of his best light 80's family film. "This is my table" "oh this is your table? and is this your wife, is this your belt aahhhh ta ta ta". "Daddy you looked burnt!...nooooo this is a good base....good base". "Welcome to the Barnicle.....todays Scully catch of the day is Gruuuuuper"

13. Rocky IV - Nuff said

14. Re-Animator - One of the great cult classic gore fest flicks of the 80's. So dumb it's great.

15. Rambo First Blood II - It's pretty bad today....but back then...I loved it.

16. Pee Wee's Big Adventure - a bunch of classic lines and scenes.....but I can't watch this anymore.

1986

1. Aliens - AWESOME!!! Still one of my all time favorite movies ever.

2. Platoon - This movie effected me. It was the first real hard core film I watched about Vietnam (later to watch Apocalypse Now as I became far more interested in it as I was 16 years old now). Tragic, repulsive and brilliantly acted by Tom Berringer and Willam Dafoe. I became an Oliver Stone fan right here.

3. Big Trouble In Little China - I am a huge John Carpenter fan and this is a cool flick. A different take on the kung foo movies of old. Kurt Russell as always delivers the goods.

4. Crossroads - I am a long time guitarist/musician and this movie spoke to me. The dual at the end between Macchio and Steve Vai (The Devils Hand) is epic. A cult classic.

5. Down And Out In Beverly Hills - One of my favorite comedies. Very dated in many ways, but the performances by Dryfus, Midler and Nolte still stand the test of time. "Call 911....call 911...call 911!!!!" "It's hangers that feed you...it's hangers that cloth you!!!!"

6. Ferris Bueller's Day Off - A great movie for it's time.....for me it has not aged well at all. Still some great moments and scenes. And for me Cameron stole the movie.

7. Highlander - AWESOME. One of my fav's.

8. The Hitcher - A superbly dark, insane journey with Rutger Haur and C.Thomas Howell.

9. Hoosiers - I cry every single time. A timeless classic. The only thing that gives away the 80's is the cheesy soundtrack. Other than that a superb film.

10. Manhunter - Yes....I loved it then and I still love this today. For me...it was the best film in the entire series (Hannibal is in it and this was later remade as Red Dragon). Michael Mann has his signature direction all over this and William Peterson was outstanding.

11. Rivers Edge - To this day I still can watch this gritty, well made take on suburbia teen boredom. Keanu Reeves was solid, but Crispen Glover and Dennis Hopper carried the film.

12. Stand By Me - What more can be said of this great coming of age film. I still love it. One day I will show it to my boy when he is a young teen.

13. Top Gun - Come on we all loved it.

14. Wildcats - Who does not love this slapstick football flick with Goldie Hawn? Your not alive if you don't like this fun romp.

15. Witchboard - a small little cult classic of a horror film that to this day I love. It screams 80's and cheese but man when you get lines like "She is falling into progressive entrapment" in the true original Ouija board film.....I am all in. Plus this is when Tawny Kitaen was a vixen plastered on ever guy's bedroom wall in high school.

oh- loved Down & Out in BH... completely missed that in my list.

holy ####... did I forget Aliens too!? great film.

holy #### two- River's Edge is ####### amazing-  for not including that one either.

HFS - a Witchboard reference?  Adding that to Fright Night and Silver Bullet, and you are really bringing me back to the stuff I watched and loved in HS.  I hope you have room for Monkey Shines and Serpent and the Rainbow on your lists too.

Barfly- wow... another of my all-time favorites. bukowski as portrayed by mickey rourke (at his cartoonish best). Planes, Trains & Autombiles- always loved the scene where martin looks at candy in the car, and he's taken the form of the devil. funny straight through, with just enough of the 80s schmaltz to take the edge off (in good and bad ways) the biting humor.

Sid & Nancy & Blue Velvet are two of my favorite movies all time, didn't realize they came out in same year...enjoyed In the Name of the Rose, too... despite the casting.  Nothing like an Italian monk with a Scottish brogue, & his skater-dude prodigy ... entertaining, nonetheless ..

1987... some of my favorites this year! looking forward to seeing what classics I missed.

Hollywood Shuffle- hilarious series of sketches spoof/satire on working as a black actor in hollywood.. townsend made this on credit cards which is mind-blowing. hugely recommend.

Raising Arizona- all-timer for me- in the top 10, depending on my mood. coens at their best.

Swimming to Cambodia- spalding grey's one-man show, directed by jon demme, primarily concerning his work in the Killing Fields. I was a big grey fan- saw him do one-man stuff and lectures a few times. love this movie- captures everything about that works about his work.

The Untouchables- epic, fun ride in spite of costner's childish performance. larger than life, why we go to see movies in the theater.

Predator- #### yes. great concept, arnold, guns, explosions, alien... great.

Spaceballs- yeah... the last of the brooks movies that has its moments- considering how much humor brooks attempted here that failed, there's still a lot that works... I can see your schwartz is bigger than mine.

Full Metal Jacket- always thought the basic training was lights-out film-making, with the 2nd act in vietnam a bit lackluster and self-indulgent. still an overall amazing movie.

Withnail & I- love this early Richard E Grant vehicle about 2 starving london hippie actors taking a weekend in the english country-side. here, hare, here. here, hare, here? see it.

Jean de Florette- one of those period frenchy things that felt mythic and pretty. need to see again, because I doubt it holds up.

RoboCop- I'd buy that for a dollar. brilliant concept and realization. cultural criticism/satire/sci-fi/comedy/action all wrpped into one well made film.

The Lost Boys- coreys! fun movie. always loved and wanted more of grandpa.

Matewan- beaufifully filmed and acted period flick about coal-mining strike/tensions in early 20th cent wva. typical sayles quality.

The Princess Bride- another all-timer... maybe so ubiquitous it's overdone and too much. still love it, especially for the humor.

House of Games- fun mind-#### ride, well written, acted and directed. mamet before I got sick of mamet... sick. sick of mamet. before I got sick of him.

Three O’Clock High- one of my favorite HS movies, the mob-mentality, the mindlessness and importance of the fights... very funny all the way through.

Barfly- wow... another of my all-time favorites. bukowski as portrayed by mickey rourke (at his cartoonish best). I quoted the hell out of this in college... to all my friends. why'd it have to be eddie... he represents everything that disgusts me: unoriginal, obviousness, ladies-man, macho energy.

Hope and Glory- amazing glimpse into wartime london from the eyes of a youngish boy. charming, frightening, enlightening... quality movie by john boorman.

The Running Man- another crazy concept that somehow works. opera-man was the best.

Mannon of the Spring- bookend to Jean de Florette, IIRC. I probably liked one more than the other.

The Last Emperor- stunning epic, biopic from bertolucci. felt like I learned a ton about a subject I knew nothing about... and also just beautifully made film. another one of those "this is why we got to the movie theater" type of movies.

Planes, Trains & Autombiles- always loved the scene where martin looks at candy in the car, and he's taken the form of the devil. funny straight through, with just enough of the 80s schmaltz to take the edge off (in good and bad ways) the biting humor.

Empire of the Sun- another astonishing period epic that brings you right in and helps tell the history and story. spielberg at his best, christian bale as a kid... great movie.

Broadcast News- I'm a big albert brooks fan, thought this was an interesting and funny look behind the scenes (a bit) of the news.

Eat the Peach- small, australian (?) film about a couple of down-and-outers trying to make a buck by making one of those motorcycle in a globe/stage thing. really don't remember much beyond that and really enjoying it.
There must be something going on every 10 years in movies now.  I think 2007 was the best year of that decade, and 97 the best year of the 90s.  87 is in contention for best of the 80s too.  (really looking forward to next year!!)

Bunch of my faves I had written down for that year that you didn't have (don't know how many would make my final list, but had written down for the year)

Lethal Weapon

Good Morning Vietnam

Evil Dead 2

Wall Street

Wings of Desire

Nightmare on Elm Street 3

Hellraiser

Near Dark

Angel Heart

Monster Squad

Some Kind of Wonderful

what the mutha duck?

Wings of Desire is my all-time favorite movie... somehow missed the release date.

I can't believe Aliens came out in 1986. How can it be that old?  That is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Yeah, like I said in the other thread I just watched this again, and it holds up so well.  Some of the wide shots of craft approaching the planets are kinda bad, but the rest holds up so well and would fit right in and kick the hell out of damn near anything released this summer.  I think it looks better than even Cameron's later movies (still surprised how not good T2 looked when I just watched it again - still love that one too though).

can't believe I left my favorite movie off my last list for 1987. god only knows what I'm leaving off of this one... doesn't appear to be many on it (note: I culled all of these years out in a blaze of energy about a week or two ago)

1988

The Milagro Beanfield War- IIRC, robert redford's first... or maybe just an early directorial effort by him. quiet, a bit of magical realism, IIRC- and small-scale story that felt bigger because of the writing and decent job directing by redford. I don't even remember who was in it.

Beetlejuice- back when burton was still having fun with his movies. or back when I was still having fun with burton's movies. love this one- keaton's perfect in it, as are baldwin and davis... and always a fan of kathleen o'hara.

Big- big fan of big. thought it was a perfect role for Hanks and I'm a sucker for the concept.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit- I'd totally #### that cartoon. thought this one was brilliant top to bottom- hoskins perfect as the grouchy private ****, christopher lloyd as the psychotic anime and jessica. at the time, breathtaking and seamless effects blending reality with animation. loved how mean the cartoons were... big fan of this.

Coming to America- hard to say more about this... love the comedy bits, especially when they're playing other characters. less interested in the main story. aha.

Die Hard- such a copied movie, it's hard to imagine a time when this hadnj't been made. willis at the top of his game but allan rickman stealing the show. perfect action ride.

A Fish Called Wanda- I haven't seen this since the theaters- don't remember much other than loving it. laughing all the way.

Midnight Run- get a load of me... I'm hop along Casadeetch. I'm a huge Grodin fan, and he's brilliant here as the dry, sarcastic foil to deniro's tough-skinned bounty hunter with the heart of gold. one of the better comedies of the 80s, IMO.

The Last Temptation of Christ- another one I haven't seen since the theaters, but at the time felt like this was the best of the year. took the part of the bible that always interested me and expanded/theorized/day-dreamed about it... brilliantly IMO.

Bird- loved this biopic about Parker... felt like I learned a bunch about the guy, plus it was beautifully made and nicely acted by forest whiteker. IIRC, directed by Eastwood- not my favorite director, but great here.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels- another one of the best comedies of the 80s. caine and martin were amazing together.

Frantic- typical disheveled harrison ford schlumphy-heroics. good, taught action/thriller beautifully shot in/around Paris.

Cinema Paradiso- I had this tortured/doomed affair with a girl I was crazy about in college- the one that got away... people thought I looked the guy, and she looked like the girl... so this always has a soft spot in my heart.  I had spent a summer in Italy, and was a bit over a certain brand of italian schmaltz in their film and tv... this one was pretty thick with it, but still did a nice job telling the story. the compilation of kisses is always a gut-punch... especially given my own above story being loosely mirrored on film.

Missed my faves, Women on the Verge... and Dangerous Liasons (Cinema Paradiso in 3rd) as well as a smaller flick, Crossing Delancey, i should think was right up your alley.

and to wrap it up,

1989

Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure- 80s version of dude where's my car. sooooo stupid and sooooo brilliant.

Adventures of Baron Munchausen- I love this movie... a lot. Gilliam's Brazil and Time Bandits get seen more I think- but this one is my favorite of his. ladies... ladies. typical Gilliam epic scope with outrageous sets and costumes and fantasy. a movie for optimists in a cynical world.

Heathers- I've never been a revenge fantasist... but this one works- dark, funny and on point in spotlighting cliched HS mores.

Say Anything- is that ktel classics? love this. cusack so good, and of course I fell in love with ione. top 5 of the 80s HS movies for me.

Field of Dreams- ok... my dad's dad disappeared (was thought to have been rubbed out by murder incorporated) when he was two- so he always had a thing about father/son movies. I watched it on tape with him once- he had never seen it.. and when it got to the 'have a catch' scene, before I even looked over I knew my dad would be losing it... that was his recurring fantasy, that his dad would reappear for even just one moment. I'm tearing up just thinking about it. RIP dad.

Vampire’s Kiss- my favorite movie nobody's seen- saw it at a film festival. nick cage as a scum-bag yuppie who may or may not be turning into a vampire. some absolutely hilarious scenes, especially with his therapist and with his secretary. cage it his very best, IMO.

Batman- remember just loving the world set up here- felt so authentic and right to the comicbook/cartoon/tv-show. just the right amout of tongue in cheek, action, humor and darkness.

Do the Right Thing- spike's movies are always hit or miss, often even within the boundaries of the specific movie. very much the case here as well, where it feels more like you're watching a play than a movie- but brings you into the world and flattens everything out to tell the story and preach.

When Harry met Sally- about as perfect a rom-com as has been made.

Sex Lies and Videotape- another one I loved at the time but haven't seen since and can't remember.

The Abyss- was kind of a mess, but great effects and big story. had a good time seeing this one in the theaters.

The Big Picture- love this movie about making movies. friends in the business say this one, in spite of being a comedy and farcical, tells more of the truth about the business inside than most. bacon is fantastic as the idealistic film-maker led astray. his gf... have to google it, because I freaking loved her. Emily Longstreth...

Drugstore Cowboy- brilliant movie all the way around by van sant- great writing, story and acting. one of the earlier movies I remember bringing you into the life of a junky in that way.

Crimes and Misdemeanors- I think this is my favorite woody movie. same typical woody themes (infidelity, guilt, getting away with a crime), but landau brilliantly at the center instead of woody.

My Left Foot- good lord, DD Lewis at the top of acting world here... and interesting biopic about subject I knew nothing about.

Roger and Me- I wonder if this had come out after the rest of Moore's movies if I would have liked it as much. but it didn't, and it felt... honest. pretty fantastic documentary about the plight of Flint.

How to get Ahead in Advertising- another one of my favorites that I'm not sure many have seen. love that the title is a double entendre, and love the whole story- from it's scathing view of the industry to the insanity that double-entendre brings about. and another brilliant turn by Richard E Grant

I still have never seen Women on the Verge... I have to be in the right mood for Almodovar, but I need to see this.

I liked, not loved Liasons. loved Uma's works in it.

I saw Delancey... didn't really register with me at the time, but I'll give it another shot, considering I've been living in the hood for so long and all of my roots are there (grandpa irving was born and raised on delancey st).

No biggie. Little charmer, well acted. Had dated Amy's sister Katy when they were out in Tesuque (Amy living w Spielberg) and met her several times. One of those who's a LOT prettier in person, so i end up seeing & liking everything she does. Her mother, also an actress, was about the most beautiful old woman i ever saw.

Not to say someone EVil doesnt have things better to do @ 10pm on a Saturday nite, but Crossing Delancey wil be on TurnerClassicMovies this evening.

Great movie, with the even better marketing ploy of three separate endings for the movie, with each theater only getting one ending. I seem to remember the newspaper listing after week two or three of it's release saying which ending was at each theater. Renting the VHS when it came out was important, as it had all three endings on it.
I'm sure many know this, but the Clue DVD has the option to see a random ending or the choice to see all three.
