Backup QBs (1 Viewer)

The starting QBs for most teams are established with few camp competitions at the QB position taking place this season. But which 'clip-board' holding QBs would produce if given the opportunity (injuries aside)?

Carr in Carolina is a good example. If Delhomme falters then Carr could benefit from a new team.

What about Huard, Lemon, Anderson, or Griese? Are any of these QBs worth a roster spot in a start 2 QB league where all starting QBs are rostered and the backups are now being drafted?

Warner, Ramsey, Sorgi
Thanks Deuce's... just a few thoughts on these QBs:Warner seemed washed up two years ago when he went to Arizona... does he have anything left in the tank?Has Ramsey got his head screwed on right? When he left Washington he was pretty bad.Don't really know a lot about Sorgi...

Charlie Batch has played very well when he's had the opportunity.

ETA: Sorry, just noticed that you said injuries aside.

Kellen Clemens

He did throw a few Td's the other night.

We probably won't know what he can do till he gets the chance but, there' no doubt that he has a stonger arm than Chad and while Chad has great touch and knows the game, Clemens would make a secondary think twice about crowding the line.

Oh - And Chad is brittle.

Sounds like Lemon has a realistic chance of being the starter in Miami.Kyle Boller?
Is the talk of Lemon being the starter recent? I know that Miami was talking about making Lemon the starter before Green arrived and Beck learned the playbook...I have seen enough of Boller over the last five years to know that he will never be more than a journeyman QB in the NFL...

I think Boller has more than a reasonable chance to perform well if/when he gets his chance. He performed very well in limited action vs Carolina and Cleveland last season 464 yards, 5 TD, 2 INT, completing 58% of his passes.I think he is good for 220 ypg and maybe 1.3-1.5 TD/game.

What I saw at dolphins TCAlso - I read a report that Lemon may start Thursday - I'll see if I can dig it up.

ETA: looks like Green will probably start Thursday, but it's still an open competition. link

Whoever the backup of the Lions is. If Kitna gets hurt, that backup spot is gold.
If Stanton were not on IR I would agree but do you really like Orlovsky?
JT O'Sullivan has been added since Stanton went down. He's apparently picked up the playbook quite well. The stat line from the preseason game looks like this:O'Sullivan: 12-19-225 1TD/ 1INTOrlovsky:15-23-220 2TD/2INTWhile Orlovsky has the edge because of the ongoing familiarity with the playbook, JT has been in the league longer. From KFFL...
Aug 8 Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions QB J.T. O'Sullivan has been getting all the snaps at backup quarterback during training camp.

I like QBs like Sorgi and Warner, who have been in the system for awhile and have a lot of weapons at their dispense.
Sorgi has the single easiest job in the world. The guy might see the field if the Colts clinch home field but otherwise he has zero shot of seeing daylight so long as Peyton Manning is a Colt.

too bad he plays in a dome. Otherwise, I think he would be doing this from the sidelines....

Seriously. The Colts could save a bundle of cash by cutting Sorgi and replacing him with a card table with folding legs to put the clip board on.

Here are 10 QBs in good offenses who are available on waivers in my league. Wondering which ones I should give priority to in adding them to my squad. As the original poster asked, the objective is to identify a backup who has a good chance to hang some big numbers on the board if the starter goes down due to injury. Feel free to actually rank these players if you are bored enough.

- Kurt Warner (Arizona)

- Doug Johnson (Cincinnati)

- Patrick Ramsey (Denver)

- Jim Sorgi (Indy)

- Jamie Martin (N.O.)

- Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay)

- Gus Frerotte (St. Louis)

- Billy Volek (San Diego)

- J.T. O'Sullivan (Detroit)

- Brooks Bollinger/Kelly Holcomb (Minnesota)

Thanks!

I would think that Kelly Holbomb (once he learns the playbook) would have a reasonable chance at starting and producing. Taylor and AP will definitely keep secondaries cheating close to the line, and the Minn line (as a whole) is no slouch. What's more, Jackson succeeding in his first full season is no lock.

Just my :blackdot:

I would rank them as follows:1. Frerotte (played with Linebrink in both MIN and MIA, so he knows the system, would have great weapons and has a history of good fill in performances)2. Sorgi (would be hard for him to be less than a servicable fantasy starter throwing to Harrison, Wayne, Clark, Gonzalez, Addai, etc)3. Rodgers (with a questionable running game, the Packers should be passing as much as ever this season)4. Volek (put up big numbers filling in for McNair with much lesser weapons than he would have in SD. The danger is that they just run 40 times a game with LT/Turner if Rivers goes down)5. O'Sullivan (very pass happy offense but you don't really know what he is capable of doing)6. Warner (great WRs and experience but I don't think ARI will be passing anywhere near as much with the coaching change so he doesn't have the upside he did under Green)7. DJohnson (great weapons but I don't think he is any good. IIRC the last time he had any major PT was replacing Vick in 2003?)8. Martin (I think he is washed up and with McAllister/Bush they could just overload with the run if Brees gets hurt)9. Ramsey (not really that great of an offense and I don't see Shanahan letting him air it out)10. Bollinger (surely you are joking by classifying MIN as a good offense. No receiving weapons at all so I don't see any upside)

Gus and Sorgi would be my first two thoughts as well.....

Not that I believe this but just to put his name into the discussion- what about CPepp if he does not win the starting job in Oakland?
