KFFL) Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt said RB Beanie Wells has improved his pass protection and believes Wells' pass catching is underrated, reports Darren Urban, of AZCardinals.com.

RotoWire) Wells has improved in pass protection during the offseason, the Cards' official site reports.

Analysis: Ultimately, Tim Hightower's ability as a blocker were a big part of his role as a third-down back and pass-catching threat out of the backfield last season. Wells has also impressed head coach Ken Whisenhunt with his hands out of the backfield, which could be a significant source of yardage for the Cards this season if Matt Leinart checks down and make him a regular option in the passing attack.

... thoughts?

Sounds like a good idea at least to try in real games. He is not known as a pass catcher because Ohio State under Tressell just don't use their backs in that way, he has good hands so if his pass blocking is up to snuff and he can catch fine then who would you rather tackle, Wells or Hightower? Pretty easy answer there.

 Not surprised. Although a small sample size, Beanie did have 12 receptions for 143 yards last year.

Having him on my fantasy team last year and also being a Buckeye fan, I think he's capable of being an adequate receiver out of the backfield, however, I would be surprised if he got more than 30-40 receptions this year. He'll steal alot of carries from Hightower, but will only get about 20 of his receptions from last year.

Really depends how he performs. IMO benie is going to high. I like him as a marginal 2. I like J Charles and P Thomas better

JCharles I get..P Thomas? You'd rather have Pierre than Beanie? Serious?
me yes. I like the skill set better.. with wells i really liked him out of OSU but i think people are jumping too fast.
I like Beanies overall talent better.. I believe he has a much greater TD potential, and total yardage potential. He has a better pedigree and he was impressive last year when he was on the field.JCharles was impressive and I wouldn't go putting Beanie over JC right now, but over Pierre definitely, dynasty wise and redraft

Let's see him show it on the field first.

All the HC said was that he's improved at pass protection and he's underrated as a pass catcher. That's not even average training camp praise. Not even a "we're going to throw him the ball" or "we'd like to see him catch some passes".

Much is being made over nothing.

FWIW, I like Pierre Thomas over Wells too. It just so happens that I am high on Thomas this year and low on Wells. Thomas is in a much better offense, with more chances to score. He will also gain more receiving yards than Wells. He finished 21st and 20th in the last two years, despite never having more than 150 carries in a season. With Mike Bell out of the picture, Thomas should exceed 150 carries and approach 200. Getting back to Wells, let's not forget about Tim Hightower. His receiving abilities will require his presence on the field. In other words, he won't be on the sidelines all game long. Wells isn't a lock for goal line duties either. When comparing two RBs, I will almost always take the RB on the better offense, because more scoring chances equals better results - most of the time.

Yea ok
:shrug:I'm with you on the Pierre take. I was speaking of Beanie whom I'm not much a fan of. I watched every Saint game this past year. Pierre gets it done on the ground, catching the ball, and he is phenomenal in the red zone. Call me a  if you want, but there's no way I'd trade Frenchy straight up for Beanie.
