Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer expects the Colts to have interest in recently released RB Ben Tate.

However, Cabot expects them to wait and see if Tate clears waivers before they consider the idea of signing him to a contract.

  • Cabot adds that the Broncos are not interested in signing Tate to a contract, despite their injuries at the running back position.
Tate, 26, signed a two-year, $6.2 million contract that included $2.5 million guaranteed with Cleveland back in March, but had fallen behind Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West on the team’s depth chart. On top of that, Tate publicly complained about his role with in the Browns’ offense, which likely played a role in him being cut. Field Yates points out that any team placing a waiver claim on Tate will have to pay him the remaining $352,941 in guarantees, plus his per-game roster bonuses of $46,875. Yates adds that there are no guarantees included in his contract in 2015.

This season, Tate has ran for 333 yards on 106 carries (3.1 YPC) and caught nine passes for 60 yards to go along with four total touchdowns.

One other team to watch in regards to Tate could be the Ravens as he’s familiar with Gary Kubiak‘s

PFF posted an interesting stat about Ben Tate that speaks more to some bad blocking on the Browns offensive line after the injury to Pro Bowl center Alex Mack than to the fault of Tate.

The loss of Mack obviously hurt all of the Browns RBs but if you look at his APC it really nose-dived once Mack went down.

The main reason why Tate signed with the Browns was because he felt it was a great fit of his skills with the blocking scheme AND the personnel on the Browns offensive line.

Of the teams out there who would be good fits? Look for a team that runs the slide-zone-blocking scheme and how have a decent offensive line.

If Baltimore is interested I think that is the best fit since he'd be reunited with Gary Kubiak who uses the ZBS and the interior of the Ravens offensive line is probably the best in the league this year.

Add the Ravens would be blocking the Steelers from getting Ben and that may entice them to offer him more if they are in the market to add to their RB stable.

Going to Pittsburgh would make him nothing more than a handcuff to Bell. Indianapolis would be much better.

ESPN's Scott Brown reports the Steelers have "no interest" in waived RB Ben Tate.

Tate has been linked to the Steelers both by reports and pure speculation, but it's apparently not happening. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the Steelers are prepared to go forward with Josh Harris and Dri Archer behind Le'Veon Bell. Pittsburgh's running game would immediately go in the tank were Bell to get injured, but it's not as if Tate has been an impact player this season.

NFL Network's Aditi Kinkhabwala reports "someone on the Steelers' staff" called a Browns counterpart to ask about Ben Tate's release on Tuesday morning.

It would seem odd for the Steelers to be interested in a malcontent back after releasing one of their own on Tuesday, but they now have a gaping hole behind Le'Veon Bell on the depth chart. Although he has not played well this season, Tate appears poised to draw much more interest than LeGarrette Blount.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports the Colts are unlikely to claim ex-Browns RB Ben Tate on waivers, but will "likely" be interested if he clears.

It's unclear if beat writer Mary Kay Cabot is simply spitballing, but she is reliable. Cabot reports the Broncos are "not interested." Tate is likely to draw more interest than fellow released back LeGarrette Blount, as he's younger, and has a much-shorter trail of incidents. Indy makes almost too much sense as a landing spot after the Colts lost Ahmad Bradshaw.

Will Tate have any impact in FF this year, regardless of where he lands? Certainly not this week. But where can he be relevant in terms of fantasy THIS YEAR and in time for the playoffs? Where is the better landing spot? In Indy with Trent and HerronL or in Blatimore with Forsett and Taliaferro? Anywhere else?

We pointed out the possibility and the Kubiak connection up-thread near the time of his release.

Keep in mind that the Ravens have the same record as the Colts. The tiebreak is SOS based on opponent winning %.

Told by a source close to Ben Tate that he will be claimed by a team before Indy (at No. 21 in waiver order) gets a chance.

Looking at the Top 10:

OAK and JAX, NYJ, MIN and NYG would grab him just to take him for a test drive as they're not really in contention and that may be reason enough

TPA/CAR/ATL, as we noted above, are actually in contention and Tate might be a contributor

TEN and WAS are pretty much set at RB; seems unlikely

Likely won't contribute this week and not much next, at which point Minn goes up against tough run defenses for the fantasy playoffs.

 
If he performs well the rest of this season he has a chance to recoup a good deal of dynasty value. It isn't like the Vikings have any clear cut studs. Asiata is a JAG and injured and McKinnon is a rookie who has looked good but is far from proven.

A perfect landing spot would have been Indy. Sadly, that was missed. Minn is less than ideal for a plethora of reasons. Crow and West obviously beat him out, two rookies, so I don't buy that this is a good landing spot since McKinnon is clearly liked and was hand picked by the current coaching staff, has already shown as much or more flash than Crow/West, and is in the 1st year of his rookie contract. Tate's already sliding effectiveness at running could be gone by the time McKinnon is set to renew.

Yes, dynasty-wise....he was best off to wind-up in a spot where they wanted to take him for a "test-drive" for 2015.

Assuming ADP wont be there in 2015, then the Vikings were one of those spots.

The Vikings were awarded Tate because they have the worst record. It's an interesting nugget as it suggests that the Colts are looking for an upgrade on Dan "Boom" Herron as the backup to ineffective Trent Richardson. Meanwhile, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians has publicly complained about his team's struggles to run the ball as Andre Ellington is averaging just 3.03 YPC over the last eight games. The good news for Ellington owners is that Arians doesn't have anywhere else to turn right now -- Stepfan Taylor and Marion Grice are not threats.

Vikings OC Norv Turner insists Jerick McKinnon is still the team's top back despite the addition of Ben Tate.
"We’re excited about Jerick and what he’s done and I see him as our running back," Norval said. According to Turner, Tate is just an "insurance" policy with McKinnon resting a back injury and Matt Asiata (concussion) unlikely for Week 12. If Tate is going to threaten McKinnon's No. 1 status, it's not going to be in Week 12 with just four days to learn the playbook. McKinnon will be a boom-or-bust RB2 against the Packers.
 
I would say Tate's value (at the moment) is somewhere between Ryan Leaf and a stick of gum....already chewed.

3 teams tried to grab him of waivers. with asiata looking to sit out and the vikings refusal to use mckinnon in the red zone tate could end up with 2 carries for 2 tds, and could be the vikings starter by the seasons end. worth a little more than a stick of gum id say.

The opportunity is there. His value is definitely more than a stick of gum although something less than a New York steak. McKinnon has been good but he is still a rookie and without a lot of experience at the position.

McKinnon ruled out. RW speculates a RBBC between Banyard, Asiata, and Tate. Wtf did they claim Tate if they werent gonna use him? Anyone think he makes a sneaky flex this week? He got 0 touches last week.

Slow down, he didnt get used last week because he was just signed. He will be utilized more, but we know how it works, people traded or claimed mid season dont work out well most of the time. I think they claimed Tate for next year more than this year. Asiata is the best option for them now. He is capable, just not that great.

With the playoffs already secured, he might be an upgrade over what they have at RB.

I think its funny we have seen how Pettine is with RBs and we blame any of them. I dont blame Tate, Crowell or West for any of their issues. The coach plays head games, that is not conducive to good performance in any field of life.

Switching teams mid season is never good. Tate has an attitude problem, which may or may not be warranted but he needs a reset and he will split time with someone next year.

I'm pretty sure the Vikings were only going to carry him as a long as they were playoff viable. He wasn't in their plans long term to begin with. Why think it's an indictment of him otherwise?

Houston let him walk, Cleveland cut him, the Vikings cut him before the end of the season even though they have no starter-quality RBs. All adds up to the guy isn't very good IMO.

Has Matt Asiata been on the team since training camp and understand the playbook and pass protections better than a guy with 5 weeks on the team? The guy was cut by two defunct teams, that doesnt carry any weight with you? Maybe teams plans are different and there is a reason why bad teams stay bad. Many ways to look at things.
