Bengals Debacle (1 Viewer)

Could you believe that "PHANTOM" roughing the passer call on Justin Smith that cost the Bengals the game? That was quite possibly the worst call by an NFL official ever! Can you even touch or tackle and QB anymore. If that doesn't get called, the Bengals recover the fumble and kneel out the clock and win 13-7. That official should lose his job. He's probably related to Gruden.

Wow a Bengals fan  about officiating? There's a shocker.....

Already tried. The ref flagged me for a personal foul - 15 yards.

Shocking  Some team's fans just can't take a loss without blaming an official one way or another. I didn't see the call, but unless the call is on the last play of the game, stop your  . I only saw the last minute of the game....boy sure as heck I thought a rookie QB completed a slant pattern to a WR that hasn't done anything for 2 years to win the game. Cincy was coming off a bye week and was playing a team without a win and you want to complain about one penalty costing you the game

:ptts:the bottom line is that we played like crap.jesus that call was terrible tho.

I wonder if the OP is also certain that the Bengals would have beaten the Steelers in the playoffs last year if Palmer hadn't have been injured.

Don't make excuses ... just admit that Cincy is not as good as their early start would indicate.

It started going downhill after the Steelers pushed them around but still lost the game.

Off a bye, against a winless team with a QB playing his 2nd game, and you blame the refs? :lmao: Didn't even get a stop on fourth down to close it out.

I'm not going to say the Bengals deserved to win, but you're not going to admit that was one of the worst calls ever?

Clearly the Bengals played bad enough to lose (Bengal homer here)

That said, can someone else give an instance where a player sacked a guy and then got a roughing the passer on the same play (where the dude was just tackled).

We're not talking the GB dude picking up McMahon and slammin' him to the turf here folks.

Terrible call. Still, stop the rookie QB from making a play on 4th and ballgame.

:goodposting:That was a terrible call, but it was consistent with other calls throughout the game. The refs appeared very eager to protect the QB.Ironically, Gradkowski himself was called for a 15-yard facemask penalty earlier in the game, following an INT. The INT was overturned [ correctly ] upon replay. One horrible call aside, I believe the Bengals lost because they were outplayed and outcoached on defense... AGAIN! Given the tough upcoming schedule, Bengal fans are staring at another .500 [non-playoff ] season. :kicksrock:

Terrible call, but worse playcalling by Bengals' staff. It was almost like Ken Anderson was calling plays again.

Couldnt believe what I was seeing. One of the worst calls Ive ever seen
Has this been league Wide?It wasn't a huge deal but, in the 41-0 Blowout of the Jets the week before, the jets got called on two roughing the passer calls that were insane..... Leftwich is what 280 lbs? guy gets hit, stays up and THEN gets the ball away and it's called what?? Late Hit?? No... can't be, the hit was well before the release, I'm just not sure anymore. That game could have easily been 34-10.... Seriously though, if my team lost because of calls like that, I'd be pissed, we all would be... I didn't see the Cincy game but, i think I have a pretty good idea by just looking at the Jax tape... You're pretty much not allowded to hit Leftwich.

I think that the point SHOULD be that the game should not have been close enough for a bad call to play such an important part of the game. If you are going to let a team hang around and not put them away then be prepared for this kind of a result!

That's ONE point.Another point is that Roughing the Passer calls have been HIGHLY questionable this year and if it's clearly not a late or High hit, i don't know why Refs would want to influence the game so much...The point of that is, next week, if they continue to make that call and YOUR team loses with a call like that involved, the last thing you're going to want to hear is that Your team shouldn't have been in such a close game in the 1st place. It's a BAD call.

Didn't the league put a point of emphasis, or something like that, on roughing the passer this offseason? If so, it would be irony of ironies for the Bengals to get burned by it since the point of emphasis was put in place due in large part to Palmer's injury and their subsequent outrage.

AGREED; it was a bad call. And yes; I think that they are being way too carefull and not letting them hit anymore but Tampa started a rookie qb, 3 rookie lineman, 2nd yr rb and the Bengals did not do anything to make them nervous. They never applied enough pressure to make them make mistakes. All I was trying to say is the refs can not take full responsability for this loss. They called a consistant game. Even if it was bad!

Said this in another thread, will add it here..I notice you didn't complain about the push-off Houshmanzada (or whatever) did on Ronde in the end zone, or the horrible int call on a ball that clearly bounced off the ground, that then led to a personal foul on Gradkowski that couldn't be reversed. No siree. Just that one call on Smith. That changed the game.

I am NOT a Bengals homer. I live in NYC and was watching that game closely. The sack and penalty came at a crucial part of the game, late 4th qtr. Yeah the Bengals should have been better prepared and TB is a garbage team, tell us something we dont know.

The point is it was an absolutely embarassing call on the ref. Pure BS and Smith was fired up. The point is, that call definately impacted the game. The bengals should have gotten the ball and ran out the clock. Anyone who is going to say that this game was not crucially impacted by that chicken**it call was either not watching, does not understand the game on a professional level, or is just blowing smoke out of their *ss trying to get Bengals fans fired up.

I didn't see it...anyone have video link?
justin smith sacked the QB and made him fumble, that's all that happened.
Ok I'd be a little upset if I were a Bengals fan but how do you let one of the worst teams in the league stick around for 4 quarters? That should have been a statement/rebound game where the Bengals took claim of the AFC north. They should have won by at least 14. Now---they let Pittsburgh slither into the picture with Baltimore still very much in it. Good job Bungles.

Do any of you guys complaining about the call here actually watch the NFL weekly?

The NFL refs are the worst in sports....and it affects all 32 teams.

WTF are you talking about? The interception was overturned. Personal fouls aren't reversible.

It was on the game-winning TD drive and turned 2nd-and-18 from the 40 into 1st-and-10 from the 25.The most amazing thing to me is that Smith actually hit the ground before Gradkowski, so the "driving the QB into the ground" line couldn't even be used here.

So we're not allowed to have a discussion about it?

Of course you are. But why bother? They blow calls that affect wins and losses every week.

It was a horrendous call. The fact of the matter is as bad as the Bengals played, as bad as the coaches coached, they still made a play to seal the game and it was taken away by one of the worst judgment calls I have ever seen in my 25 years of watching the NFL.

When you sack a QB and force a fumble and you get a penalty for roughing the passer what can you do except just shake your head in amazment and to think that call may cost the Bengals a division when all is said and done.

The fact is it was a game changing call. The game was over. And the Ref's screwed the Bengals and the ref that made the call should get a one game suspension for is inept judgement. It was a friggin sack. Not a late hit, not a vicious tackle, a sack. Amazing.

Sorry I wasn't referring to you. I was just using your post as a reference to start mine.

Didn't see the game, but I know what you mean - we have to protect the QB, but sometimes this is going a bit too far. It didn't impact the game, really, but that call for roughing the passer on my Jets last week was a pretty awful call.

Let me get this straight...I didn't see the game at all...

Bengals get hosed on a call...Bucs get a 1st down on the 25 w/ 2 mins to go and MUST score a TD to win?

If that's the case, why on earth didn't the Bengals buckle down and stop them? Having a 1st down on the 25 is no guarantee of a TD. Call a timeout, get the troops rallied...adapt...overcome. Champions do those things.

is a short link. I didn't see the game and this link is fairly short, but I guess the ref thought he drove his head into the ground.

There wasn't much of a pushoff on the TD to Housh. Housh deserved the TD. Barber did a nice job of defending the play but Housh was bigger and stronger and used amazing footwork to land inbounds. The personal foul on Gradkowski was a result of a bad call on the interception. But the bad call had litttle impact on the game. The Bucs were 4 and 34 after the 15 yard facemask, without the penalty, the Bucs still would have been 4 and 19. Given that the Bucs are the worst in the league at converting 3rd down and long, had a rookie at QB, and were in Buc territory, I am not sure the penalty had any impact whatsoever.

The Smith penalty that negated the sack and fumble did change the game.
