Ben's Chili Bowl in Washington DC (1 Viewer)

I think I'll check this place out when I go to DC later this month. I think I'll try their original chili half-smoke with mustard and onions. Anyone ever eat there? What do you think?

It's better history than it is chili. It's a part of DC lore and worth going to for that reason. But the chili is nothing special.

It's a half smoke. I enjoy it, but that's what you're getting. It's best as late night drunk food, particularly when they've got a large, diverse line and some vintage soul playing on the juke box. It's more of a cultural destination (as the place spared during the MLK riots) than a culinary one.

Not to hi-jack this thread, but going to DC last week in June and need some "good" places to eat (two kids - 12/15) We are staying just north of the White House and using the Metro to get around.

We will have a car but it will be sitting in hotel parking for $45 a night  Have been told/read to not even try to drive around DC.

Here is the official DC thread (used to be for Va and Md burbs too).

Ben's is cheap, so that's good. If there's a super long line out the door and around the corner and down the alley, then go grab some nearby Ethiopian food and come back to Ben's later. Or, go through the line for the full Ben's experience.

Old Ebbitt Grill.

Free valet parking if you dine there too

Ben's is also in Arlington, Va now if you're stumbling around that way...

1725 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA

Depending on where you are coming from (and staying) Georgia Browns is a wonderful southern restaurant. (15th st NW, between I and K streets - not far from the White House) and steps from McPhereson Sq metro station.

Lots of great places in Georgetown, on M Street, not far from Foggy Bottom Metro. Or get a cab to M St & Wisconsin and look around. Filomena is a spectacular Italian place.

This is good to know, thanks.
You can hit that instead, but I'd note that the history/culture is really connected to the original U Street location (the Arlington location just opened up). So, if want the traditional "Ben's experience," at the same place frequented by Cosby, Obama, et al., I'd go to the U Street location.

Just got back from DC yesterday. I went to the original Ben's Chili Bowl for a late lunch on 6/15 (my birthday) and I really enjoyed it. I had a half smoke with chili, mustard, and onions and some chili cheese fries and a lemonade. It was very good. I walked around looking at all the pictures on the wall and that was enjoyable also.
