Best albums of 2013 (1 Viewer)

I love the new Portugal. The Man, might be my favourite thing I've heard this year. Produced by Danger Mouse and streaming here.
Forgive my computer illiteracy, but how does one navigate that website to listen to the streaming?
That site is terrible. There is a play button at the very top. You can expand the tracklist in the upper right hand corner.

The animation right below it makes me ill.

Yeah it's really bad,I didn't actually listen to it from that site but I think that's the best legal way to hear it

I agree with the complimentary words about The Terror. In fact, I'm trying to decide if should be considered a masterpiece. Certainly my favorite album by anyone in at least a few years. However, I'm reluctant to recommend it as I can understand how others could find in a bit boring...particularly after only a few listens.

The new Tricky record "False Idols" is really good. His last several have been pretty blah but this one is not blah.

If you liked his first few solos or you're a fan of Massive Attack's better records, give this a listen.

Ah, thank you. Yeah that site is using some internet logic I'm not familiar with at all, that's for sure.

I'm falling back on old favourites a lot these days, it seems too much of the country influenced stuff (Phosphorescent, Kurt Vile, etc...) just doesn't grab me, and I'm too much of a ##### for the big hammering guitar stuff, so I stick with the middle, my top 10 this year so far are:

Portugal. The Man

Frightened Rabbit

Mikal Cronin

The Postelles

The National

Everything Everything

Fall Out Boy

Phoenix

The Thermals

Vampire Weekend

...any suggestions for what I may have overlooked in this vein so far this year? Queens of the Stone Age are on deck, I should probably check out the Cold War Kids album but they came across as a poor man's Spoon last time I tried.

Three of your top 10 overlap with mine (Frightened Rabbit, The National, Vampire Weekend) and the Mikal Cronin is in my top 20. I haven't heard your other 6 yet.

I'd be surprised if you didn't at least like French Films - White Orchid. It's one of my favorites this year.

My taste is similar. Check out Palma Violets and Parquet Court if you haven't.

Also, Steve Mason. I keep coming back to this album. Moderately obsessed at this point.

Unless someone is already a fan of the Flaming Lips, they are likely to think WTF while listening to it. There isn't much that is catchy on it, and it is pretty out there, even by their standards.

Really? I think Embryonic and Yoshimi are more "out there" than The Terror. I also think almost every song is catchy, although it takes several listens before you get the catches. Just a brilliant album. I can't stop listening to it.

Yeah that P.TM is pretty good. Since it sounds totally Danger Mouse I'll decide I hate it in two weeks.

That is a contradiction. A catchy song is one that you grabs you immediately. What you are describing are songs that are growers. Yoshimi... is very out there at times, but songs like Do You Realize? and Fight Test are immediate grabbers. Nothing on The Terror (or Embryonic) is as catchy as those tunes.Edit: this quoting system really sucks now.

Yoshimi is packed with hooks. One after another. Embryonic is not, IMO. Though, as I said before, the Embryonic material was phenomenal live. Best Lips show I've seen since Ronald.

Really like Shannon and the Clams- Dreams in the Rat house 50's style rock and roll reminds me of the Cramps a little.

Also been listening to Colleen Green-Sock it to me. It's a chick playing guitar with a drum machine but it still really catches my ear. I love the tracks "Darkest Eyes" and "Taxi Driver".

Shannon and the Clams are on a local label (+ record store/concert space) here that is really awesome. It's not the easiest business to be in these days.

So far 2013 shaping up to be a very good year (as expected; for some reason I always like odd years best  )

Really liking:

Portugal. The Man

Daft Punk

Local Natives

Vampire Weekend

The National

Frightened Rabbit

Foxygen

Somewhat good:

Phoenix

Disclosure

Not digging at all:

Deerhunter

Still a host yet to explore. Spotify @$9.99 a month is an incredible bargain.

I've already got 15 tunes in a 2013 best of and we're not halfway through the year.

Open to suggestions on your favorite tunes
