Best albums of 2017 - Playlists in post #1 (2 Viewers)

Stumbled across one while combing through 2017 release lists that really hit the spot last light and is on Spotify.  Deaf Radio - Alarm.  Some pretty damn good songs.  Has a QotSA sound and swagger to them.

new Priests and Orwells singles out... hopefully followed by albums soon. looking forward to both.

eta: my 2017 catch-all spotify link
Thanks for the link!  I think I find more music I like during the year by following and listening to the playlists from the fellow FFAers than any other way through the year.

Maybe the OP can put any links to 2017 playlists in the first post for ease?

Lovin the new Ty. Probably won't top Melted for me, but right up there. Warm Hands and Talkin' are so good. Some Tom Constaten era Dead sounding psych in there.

Yeah, they released it Xmas Eve and I would be confused if I was doing end of year lists. They actually said "Merry Christmas," mfers.

I'd count the proper release of 2017. If not, best album of 2016?
:goodposting:

The new Run the Jewels album is so ####### good. Another masterpiece from Killer Mike and El-P on every level from lyrical content to beats to flows.  I highly recommend it to everyone, even if you don't traditionally listen to hip hop.  Definitely the best album of 2016/2017 for me, regardless of genre.  The whole album is fantastic, but here are a few of my favorite tracks:

"Hey Kids (Bumaye)" ft. Danny Brown

"Talk to Me"

"Don't Get Captured"

"2100" ft. BOOTS

wow- 2017 starting with a bang...  Ty... now Cloud Nothings, Priests, and Japandroids.

I'm digging that Priests a ton. favorite of the year so far (but tbh- I haven't dived into the Japandroids in earnest yet).

Looking forward to Mark Eitzel's new one at the end of this month.  It's produced by Bernard Butler which is an interesting choice.
This one doesn't disappoint if you've liked his work with AMC and previous solo projects.  The quality of songwriting is high and Butler's production doesn't overwhelm.

I can't remember if you were a Landlady fan? new one continues a lot of what's good about them, albeit maybe a bit more subdued and groovy

LIked it.  Time will tell if I like the new one more.  I've only given it one cursory spin as background music.

Eitzel and Mark Kozelek are different animals but they'll always be bucketed as similar SF mopes but I generally like Eitzel's direction better of fewer, more fully realized works.

anybody ever listen to Chilly Gonzalez (in the same posse as Peaches)? was all over him for his first few lo-fi rap/dance albums, but drifted away as he ventured into more orchestral/piano works.

spotify just told me he had a new single... which sent me down the rabbit hole- ####### musical genius (self-described!). if interested, google his live performances... calls himself "the entertainist"- almost vaudevillian, super-villain whiteguy fake hip-hop dude in his approach. wears a silk bathrobe when he performs piano (ala hugh hefner... who, now that I think of it, is pretty much his style icon).

looks like he got a gig deconstructing music for a radio station... these are pretty amazing- whole series of them for pop songs.

piano battle vs contemporary composer Jean Francois Zygel

w/ orchestra

older, more beaty stuff in his "rap" days

worst mc

futuristic ain't #### to me + #### the pain away (w/ peaches)

...

probably just me.

Good god, the new album by Chris Thile and Brad Mehldau is fantastic. Bluegrass/Jazz fusion.  So amazing.

Ok, so Japandroids took a few spins for me to really start digging it, but I am all in now.  On the other hand, I was totally caught off guard by the Delicate Steve album. I am not sure what it is about it (probably the album artwork though :oldunsure: ) but listening to it just makes me feel happy.  I like feeling happy.

I don't really love the new Japandroids. Celebration Rock is a tough act to follow. The new Cloud Nothings is pretty on par with their last two. Been meaning to check out Delicate Steve.

lol

Few others I was going to mention that gave a try last week:

The Proper Ornaments - Foxhole   the sound very much belongs in the 60s/70s kind of a Velvet Underground feel?

Rose Elinor Dougall - Stellular  this one really clicked with me for whatever reason.  listened to it a lot last week.

Horse Thief - Trials & Truths

Fancey - Love Mirage  New Pornographers guitarist does 70s, disco-y jams?

Alice by the Meatbodies sounds great so far. A little psych, little glam, little guitar hero-y.

Syd tha Kyd's solo album is kind of a disappointment.  She doesn't have enough variety in her voice and songwriting to carry an album without the funkiness of The Internet behind her.

Moon Duo's new one is less guitar dominated than their previous records (or RIpley Johnson's work with Wooden Shjips) but it's still pretty cool head trip music.  RIYL that King Gizzard record that came out last year.

I will give this a listen soon.  Haven't heard this before.
