Best albums of 2017 - Playlists in post #1 (1 Viewer)

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit's "The Nashville Sound" is out - after seeing all three shows at The Beacon in NYC, the rest of the albums are playing for 2nd this year.

Western Addiction is my new jam.

I ran across the single for Taedium in my discover weekly playlist a few months back, dug the song, added it to my 2017 list.  Then I forgot about it.  Anyway, I had the list on random over the weekend and ran across the song again, dug it again, and looked to see if the album was out.  It was, and it rules.  It's Hardcore punk, but it's not really hardocre or really punk.  It's pretty much just badass garage rock that makes me want to dance while my face melts.

Good times.

Did you listen to that Golden Pelicans album? This reminds me a little of that.

I know there was a single a few months back but it seems the new Portugal. the Man album Woodstock is out now.

El Floppo turned me on to this in the punk thread I bumped.

Idles' "Brutalism" is the first new punk album I've heard in a long time that I've liked. It's out there, but it's good. I mean really good. They're punk, but they have a System Of A Down vibe going on with the lyrics and delivery that pushes them over the top. They can also be crazily melodic.

It's heavy, it's barked lyrics, it's funny, it's sad, it's angry. I haven't been able to stop listening for, oh, two or three days now.

you and me both.

this and that cumbia/punk Malportado Kids album... which is way out of my wheelhouse, but I can't stop (also from 2015, so not "current" for this thread).
been back on IDLES the last couple days... so, so good.

why don't you get a job.

I just added Idles to my list to check out a few hours ago... and have been listening to Blood Command in the meantime - they call themselves "deathpop".  How can I not listen to something called deathpop?  I think I kinda like it.

deathpop has more of a ring to it than punk/cumbia, that's for sure.

Looks like there's a new Washed Out.

I like their past couple.   Good think-about-nothing-while-you-sit-in-the-sun music.

I think Spoon is so ####### good that they release an album with 10 amazing songs, we kind of just shrug our shoulders and think, yeah great album, sounds like Spoon but doesn't sound like any of their past albums. They changed and innovated again and put out a super fantastic album, but what did we expect, they're the best American band going by several country miles, so we move on to whatever the next buzzy thing is, that would kill to release Telephono, let alone something on par with modern Spoon.

Which is to say, listen again to "Do I Have To Talk You Into It" or "I Ain't The One" or "Can I Sit Next to You" or "First Caress" or "Tear it Down" or hell, "Hot Thoughts".

Anyway, that's how I feel tonight.

I picked Gotho 1049 as a punk song in that Genrepalooza draft. Instant classic punk song. The part where he breaks into "Yeah yeah yeah yeah" just soars.
I actually did not make it to the end of the album... I kept wanting to go back to the new McCafferty EP, which has been pretty much all I have listened too since it dropped.

Guerilla Toss, Benjamin Booker, The Courtneys and Palehound have been in my heavy rotation.

going through my spotify release radar playlist...

new Cars single (?!) Night Spots is pretty good- hits on a lot of their old success (riff heavy, simple mix of keyboard and rock guitar), but feels a little current in a retro way.

looking down the list... looking forward to hearing the Protomartyr, Metz, Sundara Karma... and ruh-roh... keeping my fingers crossed that the new Broncho is nothing like the muddled mess of an album from last year and more like the one before that.

eta: arcade fire really have gone that ez-listening synth pop (I think it's what they're calling "indie" now) rabbit hole, haven't they. one of our group is into that sound... tasker?

another friday, another release radar playist...

three songs in, and Bronx's new single, Sore Throat, just kicked my ###. they do a nice job straddling punk/post/metal. somebody here... I think redmond... was pimping their foray into mariachi (kinda interesting). nice to hear them back to setting fire to ears- really liked their last one Bronx IV... hopefully we'll have Bronx V out soon.

eta: sorry- it's The Bronx

Friday release radar time

looking down the list prior to listening, looks like the full Arcade Fire album is out finally. looking forward to hearing new Districts, Perfect ##### and The Men singles.

will report back later- my playlist is starting with Alt-J, How to Dress Well and Elbow remixes, which don't really count.

eta: arcade fire song was less techno-poppy than their earlier released singles... I guess I'll have to listen to the album now.

the Fall have a new album? smith sounds like he can give even less vocal ####s now. which means it still sounds awesome.

this was basically a failed friday, algorithmically.

Death Cab singer Ben Gibbard covered Teenage Fanclub's 1991 album Bandwagonesque in its entirety.   It's not a revelation but it's still worth a listen if you're a fan of either band

I'm anxious to hear The Districts new one, Ordinary Day is on my songs of the year list.

Arcade Fire album isn't that bad. Sure, Peter Pan and Chemistry are far and away the worst songs they've ever recorded but the last few (the ones about love/marriage) are pretty good and the singles are fine. It won't be in my top 10 or likely even top 20 of the year but there's a bit worth listening to there.
