Best Bars in America (1 Viewer)

:goodposting:

Missing Hungry Charleys of Syracuse NY, McSorleys in Manhattan, and the Poop Deck in Hermosa Beach, CA

Tap Room at the Griswold Inn at Essex CT is nice, but a bit too small when they have live music--just too loud.

Two Denver Bars.

El Chapultepec should absolutely be on the list.

I've spent many hours in the Cruise Room and it's a decent bar but nowhere near the caliber of the 'Pec

Also not sure about Minturn over bars like Woody Creek Tavern or Hotel Jerome. Also the Golden Bee at the Broadmoor.

Surprised they wouldn't give the good Doctor's old hangout a nod and chose the Minturn instead.

I am pretty confident in saying that the best bars in America would not make this list.
I was sort of thinking the same thing. In St. Louis I used to hit this bar in the city called The Famous Bar. Great place until everyone figured out how great it was and then it just got jammed every weekend. Still really cool during the week, but the weekends there blow....

You might be surprised. El Chapultepec is an old, rundown, small jazz bar that was in LoDo when LoDo was all warehouses and has hosted just about every great jazz name there is. Nowadays, due to Coors Field, it sits in some of the best, hippest bar territory in the country but sill maintains it's old jazz/dive bar roots. In other words, it's no trendy top flight bar - it's as hip as can be without trying to be hip.

Delaware:

The Deer Park and the Logan House are pretty iconic....so I don't have any problem with them there....but Dead Presidents? C'MON..... The Starboard down?, The Bottle and Cork Down?, Klondike Kate's down?, The Lobby House down?.....

one of my top favorites

Mac's Club Deuce

222 14th Street

Miami Beach, Florida

305-531-6200

Presumably, you are in Miami because you are looking for trouble. At the Deuce, you will have a very good time finding it. If you've ever wanted to really feel the pulp, if you've ever wanted to get noir, like all night long, then you're going to want to get yourself Deuced. There is, of course, a pool table. It turns from friendly to sharkish depending on who and how you play. There's a jukebox, too. It's filled with all the up-to-no-good classics. Finally, though, there is the bar itself, a striking horseshoe design that allows you to keep one eye on your drink and one eye on everybody in the joint. That'll come in handy when Cameron Diaz comes in for a little late-night slumming. Or when trouble comes looking for you.

I was just at this one yesterday, and was oh so close to spending $100 on Macallan 30 year old Scotch.

The Bar at Keens Steakhouse New York 70

 So many memories, so long ago. We had a crazy friend steal a pool stick by sliding it down his pant leg and up his shirt to under his arm pit. Remember watching him try to walk up the stairs past the bouncers. Great stuff. Watching bouncers tackling him out in the alley knowing we had no pool table and he had no possible reason to own a pool cue was a top 5 college moment. "Why did you do it?" the bouncers asked him. Response: "It felt like the right thing to do."

maybe this deserves its own thread ("best dive bar") but here's another SoBe fave that is not listed - a true national treasure. and a classic review:

http://bestof.miaminewtimes.com/bestof/awa...8&year=2006

Best Dive Bar: On the Rocks Sports Bar

217 NW 71st Street

Miami Beach 33141

305-864-2444

Even those blessed with an ironclad constitution will find themselves hacking from the stench of spilled booze and cigarette smoke ripening this dimly lighted joint. And that's while standing on the sidewalk before venturing inside.

This seedy storefront establishment may not be much to look at, and those tarantulas and hedgehogs displayed in the pet-shop window next door do pass for kissing kin to regulars at the watering hole, but then you ask yourself: Why is it always packed? Hungry? Forget about it. Feel like dancing? Stay away. Lost the job and want to drown your sorrows with that last ten spot before hitting the skids? Cheer up -- the hooch fairy always smiles on the piss broke at this throwback paradise for the down and out.

Best of all, this dive is open 21 hours a day. Day in and day out the Rock serves up three well drinks or domestic beers for five bucks a batch until 8:00 p.m. and at a cheaper-than-fuel $2.50 each after that.

The place draws a mixed crowd -- from your pickled zombies, to your natty business dudes stretching the budget to make alimony payments, to the rare fading beauty scoping you out with her twitchy come-hither gaze. A half-dozen TV sets and sports fans ready to scrap over stats at the blow of a whistle keep the din deafening. An occasional raid or a panhandler cozying up for a free beer adds to the decidedly skeevy charm.

It's difficult to think of anywhere else in town where you can be a good sport and buy a stranger a round with your last dime, and maybe for all the down-at-the-heels patina, that's why the Rock keeps reeling them in.

Pretty good for Mass and NYC as well.

The ones I can comment on:

No. 9 Park--Haven't been for a while, but they had great bar staff then, and they had a great cocktail list. Very skilled bartenders, and very good food, one of my favorite restaurants in the city. Low-key, never jammed, a great restaurant bar, but more of a date spot than a meat market.

Eastern Standard--Right around the corner from Fenway, it's not a baseball bar. Very decent American food, and the bar is a great scene. great little patio out front, with overhead heaters in the cool weather. Great bar staff (some from No. 9 Park, in fact). If I had been making this list, I would have definitely included this bar. Good pick-up joint.

Charlie's Kitchen--The only decent dive bar in Harvard Square, with famous cheeseburgers (that aren't that great, but whatever), and a decent number of TV's playing sports. Old school, crappy, non-HD TV's. Extra bar upstairs, where, if you know the bartender, you can pretty much do whatever you want. A solid choice on this list.

B-Side Lounge--I know why this one made the list, but it shouldn't have. Opened in Cambridge a while back, it became the industry hang-out for all the Cambridge bar and restaurant staffs. Overrated food, fluorescent light bouncing off the green paint, and self-important surly bartenders that were way too proud of themselves for opening a PBR tallboy. is up for sale, the owner has some tax trouble, it has seen better days.

New York:

The Saloon--Having a martini in the basement of Grand Central is something everyone should do. And I don't even drink martinis.

The Angel's Share--A spot for classic cocktail snobs. A little upstairs bar, you have to walk through a restaurant to get to it, it has cozy little banquettes, cool DJ's spinning loungy stuff, and Chinese bartenders making cocktails like it was 1935. has a speakeasy-type vibe. Great place for two couple to go after dinner.

Pegu Club--Another cocktail lovers dream. Probably make the best drinks in the city, not the place to order a Goose and Red Bull. Their drink list is impressive. For purists.

PJ Clarke's--There's probably a hundred joints on the East Side that are as good a choice as this one, but this one is a good choice. The do pour a fantastic Guinness.

Flatiron Lounge--Very much a scene, but they take their drinks seriously. Drink list is not as good as Pegu, but it's good. Hot women in suits.

The list for Austin is a JOKE. I guess the author just loves dive bars with crappy beer. Any review that suggests you go in and have a cold pitcher of Lone Star or a can of Schlitz, is basically one i'm ignoring. Wanted to look through more but after seeing the austin choices, i'm done with this list.

This place could be good but it actually sucks. Sure, if you want the bartender to do a nice acting job while taking 7 minutes to make your drink, I guess that's cool with some people. The whole thing seemed really pretentious to me however and I prefer efficiency.

Zeitgeist San Francisco 73
LOVE this place!
Vesuvio San Francisco 73
This place not so much.
I always recommend Zeitgeist when people ask me what bar to go to in SF. Sunday afternoon, on a nice sunny day, out in the back patio eating burgers, home fries, and tamales (from the Tamale Lady), listening to punk rock, drinking excessively into the early evening, to start my drunken Mission pub crawl. I used to hang out at Vesuvio in North Beach in the early days when I first moved to SF, but now I go to Mr Bing's to knock out a few cheap drinks, cross the street to Specs (behind the Jazz Club) for a few pints of Guinness (with a Jameson neat on the side), maybe head over to the Crowbar to see if any young strumpets are hanging out there, then head up to Grant and Green, or maybe O'Reilly's Pub. Then, if I'm still standing upright, maybe head over to Fiddler's Green. Good times man. Good times.edit: If you're ever at Zeitgeist, order a Bloody Mary. They're awesome.

Like I said, for purists. The whole bartender mixology thing is part of the show there. Definitely not for everyone.

Purists just want to get drunk. They could care less about those shenanigans.

We're using a different definition of 'purist'.

I have to disagree, sitting at one of the upstairs window side tables facing the corner of Columbus and Broadway, drinking a pint of Anchor Steam watching the world pass by is one of my favorite ways to spend a Saturday in the city. I love the eclectic mix of people, really adds to the vibe.

The Office Bar in Hoonah Alaska is a dump, the town is a hole. Not sure way someone went there and found it to be good. I was there to help pick up a friends boat and we were going to stay the night in town. It was so crappy we got in the boat and moored new Juneau just to get away.

The malemute saloon in Ester and the Howling dog saloon in Fox being left off the list for Alaska speaks volumes on how crapping this list is.

Love Charlie's but I haven't set foot back in there after ALCS Game 7, 2003. Bad mojo.

Toronado is the best bar in San Francisco.
It's ok, but not one of my favorites in the Lower Haight. I like Mad Dog in the Fog across the street better. The Noc-Noc is a funky bar, but there are a lot of young ladies there. The bar near the Spaghetti Western (the Uptown?), and An Bodran is another before I choose the Toronado. My favorite bar in the Upper Haight was the old Nightbreak, especially Sushi Sundays. Live bands from 3pm to 11pm, Sushi, and hot ladies with tattoos who would beat me at pool. Then, go next door to Murio's, which is still there, but it ain't nothing now, as opposed to when the Nightbreak was open.

Back in the day the SU student ID had your DOB on it. Chucks was one of the few places that honored it as an actual ID even if the guy in the picture looked nothing like you and the ID was almost a decade old. I know it closed and reopened a few times since I've been there but it used to be downstairs. Still there?

See, now I just want to jump on the train at Hillsdale at lunch and drink my way around SF. :wall:
