Best Bars in America (1 Viewer)

Toronado is the best bar in San Francisco.
It's ok, but not one of my favorites in the Lower Haight. I like Mad Dog in the Fog across the street better. The Noc-Noc is a funky bar, but there are a lot of young ladies there. The bar near the Spaghetti Western (the Uptown?), and An Bodran is another before I choose the Toronado. My favorite bar in the Upper Haight was the old Nightbreak, especially Sushi Sundays. Live bands from 3pm to 11pm, Sushi, and hot ladies with tattoos who would beat me at pool. Then, go next door to Murio's, which is still there, but it ain't nothing now, as opposed to when the Nightbreak was open.
Toronado is a beer lover's paradise. I don't think I have been to a better beer bar in America. So many choices, everything is always fresh there, they do a great job keeping their lines clean, prices are decent and they get a lot of exotic beers that you don't see anywhere else.

See, now I just want to jump on the train at Hillsdale at lunch and drink my way around SF.
:wall:Hell, I want to hop an a plane right now for a drunken SF pub crawl.

Falling Rock Taphouse in Denver has to be one of the best beer bars in the country.

You're absolutely right about that. I used to go there for the Raspberry Wheats they would serve. I'd chase a Sausage Dog from next door with some fine brews in the afternoon at the Toronado. Cripes, I'm killing myself thinking about it.

I'm a little surprised that the Sunset Grill Bar and Tap in Allston (Boston) wasn't listed. Loved that place for years.

And you're killing me talking about it... and I've never been there. F'-it... I'm seriously gonna take a long lunch and get some beers in me.

Used to live right around the corner form that place. Quick story:Guy walks in, says to the bartender, "I'll have a Bud..."Bartender says, "I'm sorry the worst beer we have is Rolling Rock." (Sunset has 90+ on tap, and 300+ bottles)Guy thinks for a second, and says, "OK, I'll have a Rolling Rock."

Pretty good beer selection, clientele is fairly collegiate though. I'd be hard pressed to say this is one of the best bars in America, it's good for Allston though.Best bar in Boston is Lucky's. They mix good drinks, its not pretentious but they still get hot chicks and the bar itself is not glitzy but has character.

The list for Austin is a JOKE. I guess the author just loves dive bars with crappy beer. Any review that suggests you go in and have a cold pitcher of Lone Star or a can of Schlitz, is basically one i'm ignoring. Wanted to look through more but after seeing the austin choices, i'm done with this list.
Yeah, whoever was assigned Texas did a pretty horrible job.

Surprised that no Southie bars made it all. Kinda a glaring oversight.

Nice.I had friends take me there for my 25th birthday years ago. At the time, I was obsessed with Harpoon's Winter Warmer beer - I would order it everywhere I went, much to my friends dismay, who hated the stuff. They had me drink a YARD of it at the Sunset Grill - Never touched it again. I felt like I'd eaten 3 pumpkin pies.

I usually like my bars either high end (like Eastern Standard which is a fantastic choice) or pretty low end (like Bukowski's).

Missing Hungry Charleys of Syracuse NY,
 So many memories, so long ago. We had a crazy friend steal a pool stick by sliding it down his pant leg and up his shirt to under his arm pit. Remember watching him try to walk up the stairs past the bouncers. Great stuff. Watching bouncers tackling him out in the alley knowing we had no pool table and he had no possible reason to own a pool cue was a top 5 college moment. "Why did you do it?" the bouncers asked him. Response: "It felt like the right thing to do."
:excited: :suds:

:hifive:
Back in the day the SU student ID had your DOB on it. Chucks was one of the few places that honored it as an actual ID even if the guy in the picture looked nothing like you and the ID was almost a decade old. I know it closed and reopened a few times since I've been there but it used to be downstairs. Still there?
When I was there 95-98, it was 18+, your hand was stamped over/under. If you were under, you had to sit in the back section by the bandstand area, you couldn't sit in the booths by the bottom of the stairs, and obviously you couldn't buy.ABC (Alcohol Beverage Control) had the cops raid it nightly. This giant black bouncer would come around with a big bucket and if you had the under mark, he'd just tip your cup into it. Five minutes later the police would stroll through.

One of my best nights ever we spent about 10 hours there, went for lunch, got smashed, then pub-crawled M street. As I was leaving, I got stamped in case I wanted to come back, and they marked me over without checking. The Chuck's Over stamp was good enough for ID at Faegan's, and after getting stamped over there too, I didn't have to show ID at any of the other bars that night, either. Good times.

Found out one of my lady friends was known for providing favors to the boys in that dark alley that ran around back by the Orange Bookstore.

One day during summer session in June 98, the word went out Hungry Charley's was getting shut down immediately, that night they just gave away all the beer and shuttered the place.

Went down to the basement a few years later, some health-food smoothie joint opened up in the front half, they put up a wall to block off the back--somewhere behind it the original Chuck's remains.

About 3 years ago, though, it re-opened upstairs... last I heard, it's still there.

Bukowski's is cool. Eastern Standard is fine to hang out once in a while but wouldn't be my choice for best bar in Boston.

Toronado is the best bar in San Francisco.
For beer selection, it's one of the best in the nation, hands down. And you can pick up a sausage next door and bring it over, which is cool.As for best bar overall, I'm not sure. The other place this list mentions which is worth a trip is Sam's in Tiburon. I'd much rather spend a nice sunny day at Sam's or Zeitgeist than holed up in the grunginess of Toronado.

The Tick, wait!

Moe's and Joe's in the A is not great. Clermont Lounge is. The Local is a bit too hipsterish, and The Earl is more hipster but less pretentious about it.

No argument with Sam's, great place. I have never gone to Zeitgeist, somehow I missed that one when I lived out there. I've heard its a good bar from several people however.

Love it, only problem is I only go there after Rockies games and it is small and crowded.

E&H is number 1, huh?

Very good bar. Lots of great memories of 4am soul burgers there deciding which hammered chick to approach. Good times.

I went to this place a couple years ago. So many beers, so little time. I remember them having Saison Dupont on tap. Unreals.Toronado measures up favorably beer wise (and has better atmosphere), but I find it hard to imagine a place with better overall beer than the Falling Rock.

The Office Bar in Hoonah Alaska is a dump, the town is a hole. Not sure way someone went there and found it to be good. I was there to help pick up a friends boat and we were going to stay the night in town. It was so crappy we got in the boat and moored new Juneau just to get away.

The malemute saloon in Ester and the Howling dog saloon in Fox being left off the list for Alaska speaks volumes on how crapping this list is.
:excited: Yeah, cuz lord knows how much time they must've spent on...ALASKA.

Couple of good ones on the New Orleans list, but there are some legendary local dives that are not on there. Snake 'n' Jakes' ommission is inexcusable, and shows to me that the Esquire guys are not "in the know" in New Orleans. And, while obscure, many a celebrity has been known to drop in Snake 'n' Jakes in complete obscurity. It would be hard to do justice to New Orleans because there are so many great bars (I bet if you limited the list to the top 50 bars in New Orleans, everyone would find one on that list that they would fall in love with), but there are some glaring omissions here.

:lmao:I understand the tradition behind Napoleon House and Tujacques, but those are the types of places to have 1 drink and leave IMO. They completely ignored uptown.Republic isn't a bar, it's a club...and a cheesy one at that.Only one I like on that list is the Spotted Cat

Visited this joint back in '88 when The Rolling Stones played there during their Steel Wheels "final" tour. I would have been a frequent flier had I gone to Syracuse instead of Cornell.

Mean Eyed Cat kicks a lot of ###. Donn's Depot sucks balls. Never been to Mohawk or Ginny's.

Delaware:

The Deer Park and the Logan House are pretty iconic....so I don't have any problem with them there....but Dead Presidents? C'MON..... The Starboard down?, The Bottle and Cork Down?, Klondike Kate's down?, The Lobby House down?.....
starboard should be there. that place is nuts! the stone balloon should make the list posthumously.

So many good memories there. The best place if you were under 21. Great specials. Good food for lunch. I saw Lenny Kravitz play an acoustic set down there in 89-90. He sat on a piece of plywood on top of a pool table and he sang "Let Love Rule" and some other stuff. I worked there and it was sold to Clements brewpub and I continued to tend bar but nobody like Clements. Jon Fishman came in one night and said he always wanted to play there because it was the first place he had a drink when he was 14, so I hooked up a Phish concert in there in 90 when it was still Clements. They made a killing on the show and sold it back to Chucks. Kicked Nipsey's ### in pool so many times in that place...good times... :lmao:

You've remembered it incorrectly. I was undefeated on that table. They put a plaque on the wall after consecutive win 500.

Scribbling your name in Sharpie on the men's room stall divider is hardly a plaque.Still there, IIRC.

I live pretty close to the Brooklyn Inn - http://www.esquire.com/bestbars/bb-BrooklynInn Pretty good bar but think there are better ones in the area. The NY list is pretty good list with a nice variety and I have been to about half of them.
Is that the place with the indoor bocce ball?
Nope that is Floyd's or Union Hall. I have been to Floyd's but not Union hall. Floyd's is a pretty good bar. Brooklyn Inn is a bar with a great old bar, tin ceilings, wood paneling and a pool table in the back. Kinda has a feel of a different aga and it is great neighborhood bar with a very loyal following. Link to Floyd's website http://www.floydny.com/

How could they not put The Club (Miss Mae's) on there? Best drink prices I've ever seen.

Like I said above...they completely ignored uptown. Hell there are 5 bars from uptown that should have made the list. Agree about Miss Mae's....$1 crown, open 24/7 and Ms. Pac Man - can't beat that.Miss Mae's, F&M's and Fat Harry's would be on my top 5 new orleans bars list....but then again I'm from here and biased to places I hung out in high school/college

Mine, too. I also like Kingpin.

I used to live less than half a block from Kingpin - that's the fairly new (by N.O. standards) one over on Lyons, right?
