Toronado is a beer lover's paradise. I don't think I have been to a better beer bar in America. So many choices, everything is always fresh there, they do a great job keeping their lines clean, prices are decent and they get a lot of exotic beers that you don't see anywhere else.
See, now I just want to jump on the train at Hillsdale at lunch and drink my way around SF.

You're absolutely right about that. I used to go there for the Raspberry Wheats they would serve. I'd chase a Sausage Dog from next door with some fine brews in the afternoon at the Toronado. Cripes, I'm killing myself thinking about it.
And you're killing me talking about it... and I've never been there. F'-it... I'm seriously gonna take a long lunch and get some beers in me.

Pretty good beer selection, clientele is fairly collegiate though. I'd be hard pressed to say this is one of the best bars in America, it's good for Allston though.Best bar in Boston is Lucky's. They mix good drinks, its not pretentious but they still get hot chicks and the bar itself is not glitzy but has character.

I usually like my bars either high end (like Eastern Standard which is a fantastic choice) or pretty low end (like Bukowski's).
When I was there 95-98, it was 18+, your hand was stamped over/under. If you were under, you had to sit in the back section by the bandstand area, you couldn't sit in the booths by the bottom of the stairs, and obviously you couldn't buy.ABC (Alcohol Beverage Control) had the cops raid it nightly. This giant black bouncer would come around with a big bucket and if you had the under mark, he'd just tip your cup into it. Five minutes later the police would stroll through.Back in the day the SU student ID had your DOB on it. Chucks was one of the few places that honored it as an actual ID even if the guy in the picture looked nothing like you and the ID was almost a decade old. Bukowski's is cool. Eastern Standard is fine to hang out once in a while but wouldn't be my choice for best bar in Boston.

For beer selection, it's one of the best in the nation, hands down.And you can pick up a sausage next door and bring it over, which is cool.As for best bar overall, I'm not sure.The other place this list mentions which is worth a trip is Sam's in Tiburon. I'd much rather spend a nice sunny day at Sam's or Zeitgeist than holed up in the grunginess of Toronado.

No argument with Sam's, great place. I have never gone to Zeitgeist, somehow I missed that one when I lived out there. I've heard its a good bar from several people however.

No kidding. Fast Eddies all day long over McGurk's fake ### Irish pub. They serve the stouts too cold and don't clean the draft lines.
I went to this place a couple years ago. So many beers, so little time. I remember them having Saison Dupont on tap. Unreals.Toronado measures up favorably beer wise (and has better atmosphere), but I find it hard to imagine a place with better overall beer than the Falling Rock.
I understand the tradition behind Napoleon House and Tujacques, but those are the types of places to have 1 drink and leave IMO. They completely ignored uptown.Republic isn't a bar, it's a club...and a cheesy one at that.Only one I like on that list is the Spotted Cat

So many good memories there. The best place if you were under 21. Great specials. Good food for lunch. I saw Lenny Kravitz play an acoustic set down there in 89-90. He sat on a piece of plywood on top of a pool table and he sang "Let Love Rule" and some other stuff. I worked there and it was sold to Clements brewpub and I continued to tend bar but nobody like Clements. Jon Fishman came in one night and said he always wanted to play there because it was the first place he had a drink when he was 14, so I hooked up a Phish concert in there in 90 when it was still Clements. They made a killing on the show and sold it back to Chucks. Nope that is Floyd's or Union Hall. I have been to Floyd's but not Union hall. Floyd's is a pretty good bar. Brooklyn Inn is a bar with a great old bar, tin ceilings, wood paneling and a pool table in the back. Kinda has a feel of a different aga and it is great neighborhood bar with a very loyal following. Like I said above...they completely ignored uptown. Hell there are 5 bars from uptown that should have made the list. Agree about Miss Mae's....$1 crown, open 24/7 and Ms. Pac Man - can't beat that.Miss Mae's, F&M's and Fat Harry's would be on my top 5 new orleans bars list....but then again I'm from here and biased to places I hung out in high school/college
I used to live less than half a block from Kingpin - that's the fairly new (by N.O. standards) one over on Lyons, right?
