Back in the day the SU student ID had your DOB on it. Chucks was one of the few places that honored it as an actual ID even if the guy in the picture looked nothing like you and the ID was almost a decade old. I know it closed and reopened a few times since I've been there but it used to be downstairs. Still there?
When I was there 95-98, it was 18+, your hand was stamped over/under. If you were under, you had to sit in the back section by the bandstand area, you couldn't sit in the booths by the bottom of the stairs, and obviously you couldn't buy.ABC (Alcohol Beverage Control) had the cops raid it nightly. This giant black bouncer would come around with a big bucket and if you had the under mark, he'd just tip your cup into it. Five minutes later the police would stroll through.
One of my best nights ever we spent about 10 hours there, went for lunch, got smashed, then pub-crawled M street. As I was leaving, I got stamped in case I wanted to come back, and they marked me over without checking. The Chuck's Over stamp was good enough for ID at Faegan's, and after getting stamped over there too, I didn't have to show ID at any of the other bars that night, either. Good times.
Found out one of my lady friends was known for providing favors to the boys in that dark alley that ran around back by the Orange Bookstore.
One day during summer session in June 98, the word went out Hungry Charley's was getting shut down immediately, that night they just gave away all the beer and shuttered the place.
Went down to the basement a few years later, some health-food smoothie joint opened up in the front half, they put up a wall to block off the back--somewhere behind it the original Chuck's remains.
About 3 years ago, though, it re-opened upstairs... last I heard,
it's still there.
