Best Board Games (2 Viewers)

So for Christmas I have in the kids' haul Flash Point:Fire Rescue, Castles of Mad King Ludwig, and one other.  Should be a fun Christmas.
The other was Fuse.  Fuse is ####### hard.  We didn't even get close to winning with a few playthroughs.  Not a bad game, but don't expect to win this one much.

Got in one pay of Mad Ludwig and had a great time.  Fun game - putting together odd constructions is a good time, win or lose (we also like Galaxy Trucker).  Like this one a lot.

Got my 12 year old son Risk for Christmas.  I didn't expect my 7 year old daughter to even understand let alone like it, but she does.  Forgot how great this game was.  Probably my favorite ever.

Saw this on my Facebook feed...

Looks interesting, but it isn't yet available. Has anyone seen one of these at a convention? I'm intrigued, but it is pricey enough that I'll probably wait and see what kind of games they manage to land.

Disclaimer:  No idea offhand what the suggested age range is for Ticket to Ride.  The game mechanics are really simple.  You collect cards of the same color to build railroad lines between cities on the map and I'm fairly certain that a first grader can pick it up.  The game strategy, however, requires that you decide what rails you will need to build longer routes and will probably take a game or two before the child gets it.  But get it they will and they will love it.  It's currently the favorite game in my family with ages ranging from 10-74.
We got this for our 5 year old in Kindergarten for X-Mas and while he understands what he's suppose to do as far as making routes, etc; it's still a little too strategy heavy for him at this point.  So it's a little advanced, but he has fun making the routes

He also got Monopoly Empires from a relative which is dumbed down, quickplay version of the original.  While it's not perfect since there is a whole lot of luck involved, he gets the strategy of the game which makes it fun.

We got a bunch of games for Christmas: Ticket to Ride, Machi Koro, iKnow, Game of Thrones.

Ticket to Ride: Really fun even though we didn't read the back page of the rule sheet. :bag:  So we played with the winner being the first to 100 points and disclosed our tickets as soon as we finished one.

Machi Koro: Really fun, pretty simple. But there's a simple hack for 2 player games. 4 player games are far more dynamic.

iKnow: It's like trivial pursuit with betting. Lots of fun with varying levels of difficulty depending on the age of the players. Up to 6 players is plus.

Haven't opend GoT yet, seems really complicated.

Played The Oregon Trail card game. Kinda fun, but is pretty tough to win even when players try to help each other.

I loved Risk too. Friends got me into Axis & Allies. Weekends lost playing the game.

I am thinking about getting this for our house. My 7 year old would get a kick out of it, I'm guessing. I got "Dominion" for a buddy over Xmas but he thinks it's too hard for his 9 year old.

I'd love to play risk with my wife's family but I'm afraid it'd end in multiple murders. It's a very competitive family and people get really mad even during Settlers of Catan.

It really is a great game. And a much different game when it's 3-4 people versus 6.

My world geography knowledge started with the Risk board.  And learning to never get involved in a land war in Asia.

our faves to play with our 2 boys ages 8 and 10

machi koro - would recommend the bright lights big city base as it paces the game better.

castle panic - great co-op game for boys. you are on a team defending your castle from attacking orcs and whatnot.

king of tokyo/king of NY - boys love the tokyo game we just picked up NY for xmas.  it seems much faster but still fun.

snake oil - each round there is a profession and a judge. all participants have a hand of 5 cards with words on them. they make a product up using 2 of those 5 cards and make up a description for that made up product. the judge picks the best product for that profession.  very fun with kids. they make up some crazy ####

i finally picked up munchkin at xmas.  need to figure out how to play that.

Christmas haul:

The Builders: Middle Ages - light, breezy fun
Morels - 2p that is an easy setup, we've been playing it almost nightly for the past week
Spyfall - A positive rating from me, but this social deduction party game really depends on the party you're playing with

Terra Mystica - finally own a copy of this bad boy, better than I had even hoped it to be. A lovely set of product and pieces with a really enjoyable weight to the gameplay.
Robinson Crusoe - finally finally own a copy of THIS bad boy, haven't cracked it open yet, waiting to play with 3 or 4 for the first playthrough

I don't know any of those, but think the kids would like snake oil a lot (they love apples-to-apples).

how much yayo do you have to sling in king of ny to win the game?

We've been enjoying Can't Stop, a republished 80s classic from designer/collector Sid Sackson.  We're playing on an iPad but there's a board game version as well.

The game is simple to learn and plays quickly for 2-4 players so it has that "just one more game" quality to it.  The game mechanics are basic press-your-luck with dice but there are a number of different tactics that can be employed.  If you play with your kids, they'll definitely be better craps players when they grow up.

Picked up a couple new games as well.

7 Wonders Duel -- Not bad, but I think owning the original certainly helps.  It's only for 2 players but can be played relatively quickly

Codenames -- Tried this with friends over New Year's.  It's fun, not bad for a $15 game, but not a must-have.

That'd be awesome if the get some popular games. Cleaning up and storing boxes is a PITA.

We got a couple of games for Christmas for the kids from their aunt. King of Tokyo and Catan. Can someone tell me is there a way to force someone to leave Tokyo. We played just a little bit and it seemed like the first two players just go to Tokyo and stay there. Doesn't seem like the third could be competitive that way? What am I missing? Haven't tried Catan yet. Two girls, 12 and 7.

Noted.  Looks great.

Another Sid Sackson classic, Acquire, is getting republished in February.  It will be a much higher-quality board that what is available now; much more like the 1999 edition where the tiles locked in to a space on the board.

Not like most games in this thread, but we played Truth Be Told a couple of times at parties over the holidays.  Really easy, fun, funny, and a good way to get to know people better especially if everyone has a cocktail or six.

We got the kids Pandemic for Xmas. There was a learning curve, but once we got the logistics down it was a funny game for all four of us. The 8yr old asks to play it every night now.

only one person is in tokyo at a time. you cant heal while you are in tokyo and everyone is attacking only you so that forces you to leave when you get low enough health.

Ah. There are two spots so I thought each of two players occupies each spot.

Have had Dominion for a couple of years.  I am hosting a game night a couple of nights a month at my house for guys in my neighborhood and learned how to play.   Fun game.  Easy to learn.  Great game to play while talking or watching a game or movie.  Taught my son today.

Grabbed Splendor over the weekend to try.

The Castle of Mad King Ludwig is excellent.  Love tile laying games - this one is pretty awesome.

Also ordered Captain Sonar. Back in stock at Amazon and local game shops had none in and none on horizon.

Bought Ticket to Ride a few weeks ago. Is there a recommend video tutorial? Directions/rules are poorly written, imo...

My 12 year old daughter loves this game.  I enjoy it too, but I tend to not enjoy co-ops as much.  We've played in 3 times so far (along with my wife and son) and have won once (on the easy level).  About how often do you win?

Love Splendor.  Very easy, but still fun for avid gamers.  Have played it hundreds of times on my tablet.

We have played 3 times so far and won twice.  The last time, we literally won in the last possible moment.  My son cured the last disease, but if he had to draw cards, we would have lost since there were none left.  That is on easy, as well.

Yeah, on our win there was 1 card left in the draw pile.   The other 2 times we ran out of cubes of 1 color after a chain reaction outbreak.  If we can bat .500 on this game, I think it will come to the table often.  If it's next to impossible I think the kids may lose interest.  Personally I'd prefer if it's difficult to win.

I think once you know how to play, 60% or a little higher is doable.  We have gravitated to co-op games because then we don't have people getting angry (i.e. my daughter and my wife).  Forbidden Island is another one.  Just picked up Sentinels of the Multiverse which is supposed to be another fantastic co-op.  I have found Dominion to also fit this bill since you are not actively trying to wreck the other players, just do your best in your turns.  Well mostly.

We haven't played in a bit but I think we were batting .300.

My problem with most co-op games is I feel like it ends up being one or two people dictating every move for everyone else.

What's fun a about Forbidden Island and Desert, is it seems like every move the entire group will work together to decide what 'each person' does. You may be the one moving the Navigator token around, or whatever, but it's deeply coordinated among all the players. At least in my experience, it's so collaborative that it doesn't feel like being dictated to. The only way to win is for absolutely everyone to get involved. One player going rogue will guarantee a loss.
Agreed.  It lets everyone contribute as long as everyone is willing to allow it.

Dead of Winter is co-op but you also have your own mission as well as a possibility for a traitor.

Combines the best of co-op and individual gameplay.

My group hated Dead of Winter with a passion.  Too frustrating (and they're experienced gamers).  Not trying to rain on the parade.

Pandemic Legacy, on the other hand, is the favorite by far.

Just noticed the Pandemic discussion in here. I received it as a present last Christmas, so I've been playing for about 13 months now. I absolutely love this game. I have purchased the iOS version (which I don't recommend, this game was NOT meant to be played on a phone, my win rate is cut in half because of the small screen) and I also recently found a fan made PC version. It's not a licensed copy but it's a good way to play through the game quickly without having to shuffle, move pieces, etc.

Playing a 2 person game with only 4 epidemic cards I'd say my wife and I win probably 95% of the time. Make it a 4 person game on the same difficulty and the win rate drops to maybe 70-75% of the time. Once you up it to 5 epidemic cards win rates are more like 50% for 2 player and 20% for 4 player. And I haven't yet beaten a 6 epidemic game.

One of the best things about Pandemic is that there is a version called Pandemic: Legacy. Where you buy a new a whole new set of the game with the goal of playing it 12-24 times depending on how successful you are. And where things that happen in each playthrough can carry through to future playthroughs. There are stickers that you will place on your gameboard that alter the rules, at times you will be told to rip up cards, etc.

My friends and I started playing this version in January. Our first effort was marred by mistakes, ie so many new rules to follow that mistakes were made that we decided to start again (we had to peel some stickers off the board). Our restart went much better and fun was had by all. However we are all very excited and completely terrified of what is waiting for us in the next year of play. Already what has occurred in the first game has completely shattered what we knew about this game.

We played Legacy as a one off just to get familiar and it was tough with 4 players. Needed one more round to win when we ran out of cards. Liked it a lot but I'm not sure I see us going through the full set of scenarios. My gaming group doesn't have the attention span to stick with it. Two guys in my group are kick starter addicts so we are constantly getting/playing new games which can be both good and bad .

I do not like semi-coops. Actually found Dead of Winter's full cooperative mode much more fun, but personal preference and all.

Marvel Legendary is the absolute worst about this.

One of the things I find the most interesting about Pandemic is how much this changes for us depending on who's playing.  At 4 pandemic cards in the deck, if I play on my phone (you take each of the 4 players' turns), I probably win 25% of the time or less.  If I add my 12yo son or 15yo daughter, we jump to about 50%.  If all three of us are playing, it's 75%.  Add my wife and it feels like we win every time... but as others have said, it's always by the skin of our teeth on the last turn.

My brother-in-law and I are a great team - we throw in all the pandemic cards and still win probably 75%.  I'm not sure if it's just that he's great at the game or if we just mesh well.

So much depends on the roles you get,  too.  If you get the one that let's you shuttle people around,  so much easier.

Recently came from a con in Raleigh. Always learn at least 7 or 8 new games at every con. HUGE fan of Great Western Trail (near impossible to get right now...will be reprinted) and Abyss. Also enjoyed Terraforming Mars.

We're about halfway thru the first year of Pandemic Legacy now and absolutely loving it.  Just wish they had a 5th player option, which will probably be coming soon.  The second 'season' of it is nearly ready as well.

for you guys playing Pandemic Legacy, would it be fun with just 2 players?  and can you alter the number of players from game to game?
