Best guitar solo of all time in a song? (1 Viewer)

some great descriptions of them in there.
this one had me rolling

10 LENNY KRAVITZ

“American Woman”

5 (1998)

GUITARIST: Lenny Kravitz

In this plodding, lethargic remake of the Guess Who hit, Lenny Kravitz sucks all the bounce and air out of Randy Bachman’s classic riff like a vampire performing cunnilingus on a blow-up doll. If songs could give out restraining orders, Kravitz would be forced to stay away from everything recorded between 1960 and 1979.
Not sure I could possibly disagree more with that.
i saw another list on another site that had this as one of the worst too

Clapton on While my Guitar Gently Weeps makes the song.
:goodposting:

Young Clapton with the Beatles and George Martin producing.

Done and done.
Now before I get flamed for even SUGGESTING the following, please at least watch or listen to it before people turn their collective noses up at the following.

I would say that Prince (of all people) NAILS the solo at the end of While My Guitar Gently Weeps in the following video. It's like off the charts good. Too bad he didn't play more guitar for other artists. The man has skills (even if a lot of people can't stand his music). Solo starts roughly 3:30 in and runs the rest of the way. I wouldn't put Prince and The Beatles in the same sentence either, but the proof is in the pudding.

Holy crap, and then he throws the guitar in the air and makes it disappear!

That's rock n' roll.
I think it got raptured.

Guess I am the outlier then. I like Kravitz and I liked that remake.

Seems appropriate.

1) Comfortably Numb (live)
Late to the thread and I'll stop here. Should this ever come up on the radio and my boys are with me, they know to be quiet show reverence... :tebow:

That being said, I'll throw a curveball into the ring- the godfather of grunge at work evoking a similar kind of emotion here ... ;)

I never got the love for Young even though I get his style.Love his songwriting but his playing sometimes makes me want to :X
Well, first you have his acoustic stuff which is pretty much :moneybag: no matter how you look at it, then you have his dirty stuff. Tell me that he doesn't wring everything out of that guitar in Hurricane...

Edited to add: and I did call it a curveball. ;)

Another favorite solo of mine is this little Clapton one - Let it Rain

He's really laying down some licks throughout the song - and then about 3:58 into this one - takes it into overdrive for just a quick sweet Clapton burst of brilliance

Picking a "best" is impossible imo. Unless you break it down, somehow.

Most melodic: Knocking on Heaven's Door, Slash (his best work - song is tired but man those solos are back to back to back awesomeness).

Most underated: Purple Rain, Prince

Most buried in drek: Outta My Mind, John Mayer

Too many great ones to claim a "best", and I like all that have been mentioned here.

I would add Gary Moore's Still Got The Blues as a favorite.

I also agree that Prince is a very underrated guitarist. Love his solo in the As My Guitar Gently Weeps video posted above.

Damn, I youTube one Ted Nugent song and now I'm getting ads asking me to support Ted Cruz and play Bible trivia. Stellar job there, Theodore.

While maybe not the best but Metallica's Kirk Hammett deserves mention...love the solo in One.
Huge fan of Metallica and Hammett. Sometimes it seems that Hammett lacks the emotion of the true greats. I love the solos in Master of Puppets. Kirk gets after it.

Knopfler on Sultan of Swing or the theme from Local Hero is a fav, but Gilmour on CN is the all time best for me.

Also The White Stripes Offend in Every Way

And Muse- Knights of Cydonia

Free Bird gets all the Skynyrd love, and its a great solo for the sake of soloing. I think the guitar work in "That Smell" is much better.
Simple Man probably even better.
A personal favorite
Damn I just remembered "Tuesday's Gone" Now that's a solo.
True
Great choices, but if you're talking Skynyrd nothing comes close to "I Know A Little".

Killer opening and great solos throughout.

I'm the biggest gnr fan here and I'll say this:

As a member of the band, paradise city outro and November rain solo are the entries. But his best solo where he put his stamp on the song ? Estranged. It's a pure hair metal solo with melody and texture in the middle of a song axl was taking too seriously. Great notes, tone, etc.

Agreed, said the same earlier. Although as a stand alone piece, I always loved when he'd play the theme from "The Godfather" live, with the band coming in half way through. It's all over YouTube for anyone who's never heard it.

The last of the real guitar solos.

Estranged is incredible.

By the way, some if the other solos on AFR are awesome too. I love in Night Train, where Izzy has a solo and then out of nowhere Slash breaks into it with his own and his guitar in comparison sounds like it's on fire.

You were in gnr? Wow. That's awesome.

only acceptable answer is live Comfortably Numb. even the album version is in contention, but live is just another experience entirely.
Almost as good is the solo in On The Turning Away from the Delicate Sound Of Thunder live album.

some good picks in here. shine on you crazy diamond is probably my favorite, but someone needs to mention SRV...Texas Flood, maybe.

and McCready is very underrated.
Texas Flood deserves more than a mention. Specifically the version he performed "Live at the El Mocambo". SRV's solo in Texas Flood, along with the rest of the entire El Mocambo show, is the greatest performance in the history of guitar.

George Lynch is my favorite guitar player so I have to list one if his solos. The solo in The Hunter is awesome. Lynch was blazing fast but was also melodic. I'm not comparing his solos to Page, Gilmore, SVH, or even Slash. Those guys are on another level. When it came to the 80's metal sound, Lynch was king to me.
