What is the best movie of the last 25 years that didn't win best picture? Don't compare it to the movies that won or the competition of that particular year. Just, on it's own, what's the best movie not to get the "best film prize"?

This should be a landslide for Shawshank.

Well maybe not landslide since Goodfellas is listed too, but still by a decent margin.

Goodfellas.

I would swap Social Network and Private Ryan for:

Boogie Nights (not even nominated)

Sideways

Brokeback Mountain (very egregious snub)

Pulp Fiction probably. Can't go wrong with any on that list though. Probably dozens of others. Best movie of the year is kind of silly anyways.

Thanks. I liked "Dances With Wolves", but it's not as good as "Goodfellas". Not does it stand the testes of time.
I haven't had a Sunday drink in some time...gawd as my witness wife dropped me off at The Counter while she went shopping at Macy's today...found my way to 3 married blondes in their mid 30s with kids trying to tie one on before they went back home. I had 3 shots of fireball bought for me, about the time they left my wife came to pick me up from adult day care...

Did any of their mothers come along to molest you?

I voted Pulp Fiction, but I think you can make a case for almost any of these.

I'd go

Pulp

L.A. Confidential

Shawshank

Fargo

Goodfellas

Didn't Fargo win some major awards, though?

Went Goodfellas but I think you can make a case for Pulp or Private Ryan too

Shawshank may be one of the most overrated movies of all time...don't get me wrong, it's good, but doesn't belong anywhere near the GOAT discussion people like to put it in

Good poll topic.  It still bugs me that Forrest Gump won over Shawshank and Pulp Fiction.  On the list given, I probably go Shawshank, Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, and then LA Confidential - love those 4.

I voted Pulp Fiction.

Of those listed, I'd rank them:

Pulp Fiction

Fargo

Shawshank Redemption

LA Confidential

Goodfellas

Memento

Saving Private Ryan

Social Network

Quiz Show

There Will Be Blood

DTRT was above average and that's about it.
Its a wonderful document of that moment in time in NY... it was probably almost "too real", but supposedly Spike lee messed up doing the awards glad handing that year or he would have been taken more seriously.  Started a life long rift with Clint Eastwood, who's been a player for half of the existence of Hollywood.

That said, I watched it recent, and its kind of a cartoon and some of the shots are embarssing

Life is Beautiful, Cider House Rules, and Good Will Hunting are very high on my list.  I would vote Cider House Rules of those three, but its close.

Saving Private Ryan, the first half hour of this movie was worth the Oscar, instead they gave it to shakespeare in love. All of those other films had worthy competition.

I would add to this list:

The People Vs Larry Flynt

Letters From Iwo Jima

Searching For Bobby Fischer

The Fellowship of the Ring

Capote

Europa Europa

Election

Agree that Her should have been on the list.

Not surprised at the voting, when I saw the question I assumed it would be Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, and Shawshank getting the love.  I get two of them, but still think Goodfellas is really overrated.  From the rumblings in here, I guess it's not a very popular opinion, but I am huge PTA fan so I think Boogie Nights or There Will be Blood are two of the best movies of the decades they came out.  There Will Be Blood got my vote.

Actually, IMO the 1998 Oscars was just a joke. 1997 Is one of my favorite years for movies, and  Boogie Nights,  The Sweet Hereafter, The Ice Storm, and Jackie Brown are way better than what they rolled out for nominations for best picture.  As Good as It Gets?  GTFO.
