Any good hybrid e-bikes out there? I'm looking for something I can ride to get some exercise but also on occasion crank up the speeds to flow with traffic on residential streets (20-30mph). If it looks like a normal bike that's ideal because I don't want a theft target. Would like to keep this under $2k. State Bikes used to make one that I liked but looks like they stopped manufacturing it. Type of style I'm looking for: https://www.statebicycle.com/collec...kes/products/6061-black-label-v3-black-mirror.

Don't you spend $2k on white cotton t-shirts?

No need to break the bank. These cotton shirts are all you need: https://www.merzbschwanen.com/products/mens-loopwheeled-t-shirt-7-2oz-sq-yd-classic-fit-4

Real talk, I would not recommend a fixie e-bike and I'm not sure they even make them. Seems unsafe.

This bike looks like a pretty good deal for what you get, but it's a touch over your price point.

This brand caught my eye on a previous search. That's a beautiful bike and looks to be worth the extra spend. Thank you!

Any roadies out there? I'm wondering what your average power output is or even what W/kg you're getting. Give me a speed and cadence while you're at it too.
My typical hard Thursday ride is 1.5 hours, 230-250W normalized, maybe 190 average (it's not a steady state ride, for sure). Pretty flat ride - we'll average ~20. Cadence 85 or so.

W/kg is hackcoughhack.

I hang in there with our A groups, but certainly don't lead the way, at least this season.

i just watched a little of the lance armstrong 30 for 30 he is a pile of crap and doesnt seem to have any real remorse aside from saying what he knows he is supposed to say about the people whose lives he ruined and dont even get me started about a drug user who probably caused his own cancer cheating using his cancer to make money screw him and the bike he rode in on take that to the bank bromigo

Just got back from marking our big race for the area, the Marji Gesick. 100 miler and 50 miler, widely accepted as the hardest single day mountain bike race in the country. The 100 is actually about 107 (12,000ft of climbing) and the 50 is really 63, distance is relative up in the north woods, or maybe we're just bad at math :loco:. It really showcases the best of Marquette and the RAMBA trail systems and is famous for the final 15 miles.

My wife is on the board and I volunteer to do trail building and maintenance and we're all super proud of this event. Tons of work goes into it and it really brings the entire community together. Over the years it's become really popular and it fills up within minutes of registration.

Bummed to miss riding it this year, but there's some epic aid stations that are really just big parties and it'll be a great time party hopping from one to the next.

Here's a little video that's a few years old (it's gotten much harder since) but it's only a few minutes long of anyone is interested in more about it. (Nobody knows if the kid ever did the 53, or if he ever got brakes on his bike:lmao:)

Eta. Marking the damn thing might be harder than competing in it. On off on off on off the bike gets real old quickly.
100mi run starts in an hour (8am est) 48 hrs and 30 mins is the cutoff to complete it. God bless em. There's crazy and then there's CRAZY.

One of the most iconic 100 milers in the world started as a horse race until a group of soldiers said they could do it. WALA! The Western States Endurance Run was born.

There's even a few dirt bag trail runners on this very board who have competed there. Incredible race, enjoy the weekend!

We had 64 sign up and I'm not sure how many actually started. Maybe i should post the race in the 10k thread aswell. If there's a few ultra endurance maniacs in there it might be right up their alley.

100% you should, there's a handful of nuts in there that run ultra's that would love it. Not as many as there used to be because they all beat the living **** out of themselves running ultra's but still a few.

I ran for many years prior to taking up mountain biking full time and know this statement is true. For as dangerous as mountain biking is it doesn't compare to the everyday aches and pains from running. I did it all, gravel paths, blacktop, trails you name it and it beat me up pretty good regardless. Guys that can run (or walk) these crazy long distances have my respect and then some.

Honest question - are there any laws regarding eBikes on public roadways?

We live on a relatively quiet cul de sac off of a moderately traveled back road just outside of town. Speed limit on the back road is 35-45 mph, and it's wooded, narrow, and windy with no shoulder. I love the kids in the neighborhood - my kids have grown up with a lot of them. Between our cu de sac and the nearby stretch of the back road, there are about a dozen kids between 3rd grade and 9th grade.

Several of the kids have gotten eBikes in the last few months - one of the 9th graders, a two of the 7th graders. They whip all around the area on their eBikes at pretty much the same speed cars travel, and they have zero regard for the rules of the road. I'm not trying to start anything or overstep my bounds, but I fail to understand how it's legal/safe for middle schoolers to essentially drive motorcycles on public roads with no regulation. There's a zero percent chance my kids are getting one of these bikes any time soon - and if they do, it won't be to drive all over town. Am I missing something? Is this actually 100% legal?

This is a problem all over.

We just had a full ban placed on class 2 and 3 ebikes on the paths in our area and it is being enforced. No idea about the streets, but I'm guessing that's coming next, or atleast heavily enforced if it's already on the books.

Kids on these things are kind of a menace. It's sad since so many elderly people were using these bikes to get out and about and now they're technically illegal on the bike paths.

While I'm at it here are 2 other local races. One is "enhanced gravel" for you non mtb'ers and the other is a fat bike race on groomed snow. The fat bike race also has snowshoe races.

I watched a good Syd and Mackey video about the Marji, it looks pretty great. I love those Marquette South trails, but can't picture riding that distance with that difficulty of trail.
Yeah, i had a chance to meet them last year, really nice people. I liked that video too. It was a good representation of the course. They're signed up to try again this year I believe, to see if Syd can be the first women to earn a buckle.

As far as the trails it gets progressively worse, what you ride in Marquette compared to the Ishpeming/Negaunee trails are much more flowy. RAMBA is roots, rocks, rinse repeat, one hill after another. It's very challenging, but the "50" is doable for most people if they really want to finish, there's zero shame in hike a bike during this race. Tons of comradery so when you feel about done there always someone to help keep you moving. Teir 2 fun without a doubt.
Looks like at least 2 women got buckles. I'm guessing the next 2 don't get it, but that's a cool breakthrough. I watched the Syd video today from just after 2024's race where she pretty much says she doesn't think she can even make it a goal because it didn't seem feasible.

ETA: 3!

Yup 3 ladies buckled today and man were they excited along with everybody else. It was a pretty good moment at the finish. We had perfect weather (until about 9:30 when the sky opened up and it poured for the next hour but anyone competing for buckles avoided this) so it was kind of if not this year then maybe never, but they did it with just a few minutes to spare. First women to get it done

Speaking of the good weather we had course records go down all weekend. Fastest 100mi runner (25hours 30mins) with 9 getting buckles (not sure, but i think this was a record). Fastest 100mi biker (9hours 53mins) with 26 buckles (also a record). Duathlon had 16 buckles (not sure if that's a record, but I'm thinking so winner did that one in 16hours 12mins probably also a record). It's rare to have such perfect conditions and the riders and runners really took advantage.

Eta looking forward to Syd's video on this.

Maybe something like these? Decent deals on a few.

Decided on one of these Zooz bikes. Brought me back to my younger BMX days. It's really fun to ride and pretty low key (i.e. not as much of a theft target as it doesn't scream e-bike).

Very nice. Ebikes are super fun and very capable. That one looks pretty playful if you wanted to do more than just commute.

I have a commuter Ebike and just got a proper Emtb bike this week for downhill laps. I technically bought it for my wife, but I've been the one riding it so far. Not a replacement for a regular bike but beats the shuttle and can get in a ton more laps at the downhill parks.

Meanwhile I went to a ski area yesterday to ride 2 laps... and quit after 1. The top is just way up there.

LOL - I squeezed in a ride in Boulder during a trip this week. The combination of altitude (way more effect that I thought) and singletrack (way underbiked and underskilled) meant a slow, slow ride. It felt like a 100ft/mile ride and was only 60; practically flat. Damn altitude. Made the rental car return cutoff by 15 minutes, so got as much as I could in - and it wasn't work! Gotta take time to do stuff like this more often.

Days the chair lift don't run suuuucckk and those are only 1/3 of the available downhill trails here anyway. My only regret with the emtb bike is not getting it sooner. I'm a techy XC guy at heart and there's no way an ebike becomes my primary, but 15 laps at the bike park beat 7 or 8.

That's a big-boy ride, well done. 40 miles at elevation with 2300 feet of elevation is taking on a lot.

I've only done something like this twice - ended up in a place with a day off, rented a bike and rode trails. I agree, I should do it more. I should extend work trips into the weekend. I think I'm still in "get home to the kids" mode, but the kids are gone and I'm aging - it's time to do stuff when the opportunity is there.

It was the singletrack that was the energy drain - some of what I rode was really only walkable, at least for me. When I got to the northern part of it - wide dirt roads, etc. it was pretty awesome. I averaged 15 on those sections. Just shows how insanely slow I was on the singletrack parts. There is a reason I don't own a MTB.

Was it this thread or another where there was talk of the C&O canal path outside of DC? Planning a trip there this weekend with wife and 10 year old son (we’re all decent cyclists, though our limit is determined by 10 year old).

Hoping to start in Harper’s Ferry area, bike to Antietam to see battlefield/sites and return. Not sure if it should be an out and back or a loop to make most of it. Anyone done this?

I just did this. We were coming from the other direction. Be aware that it gets hilly off the trail. Our entry to Antietam from the north was quite hilly. And Antietam itself is rolling, the south part worse than the north -we rode around the north side. Id make it some sort of out and back to maximize time on the flat trail.

Also note the stairs from Harper's Ferry are out. There is a shuttle, but check that out.

Other than those items sounds awesome.

Thank you! I think we’ll start in Md just across the water from Harper’s ferry (there is a parking lot on that side as well). Then we’ll do the bottom half of your Strava ride here, then into town on Synders landing - is that a heavily traveled road with cars? Like I said, we’ll have a 10 year old. Then lunch in town with a quick trip around battlefields (there isn’t a need to buy a pass is there?), then out of town via shortcut on Harper’s ferry road (again, if not a heavily traveled road).

Snyders Landing road was very quiet. Nice road with farms on it. Didn't ride Harpers Ferry road. Maybe Millers Sawmill Road? That looks quiet and Strava Heatmap says that's where cyclists ride. I do know Shepherdstown Pike was super busy and a no bueno, so don't go that way.

Sadly barely a week after I posted this, a 13 year-old from a town not far from here was killed in an eBike crash. I hate that awareness comes with tragedy. They had a moment of silence at my son's football game this weekend as it was against the town next to this boy's town. :crying: My heart breaks for the family - I can't even imagine what they're going through.

This guy made it into my Instagram feed so I watched the 8 day updates he did setting the record from Key West, FL to somewhere just over the border in Canada. Previous record was 11 days, he did it in 8 riding close to 300 miles a day for most of the trip with a 354 miler to finish up.

When I think about things I want to do there is the easy, recreation fun, the type 2 "holy crap, glad I did that" fun, and then a pretty hard line. That, right there, is about 18 miles over that line.
