Bicycle Guys! (1 Viewer)

After years of zwift on my old wahoo kickr and $100 Amazon road bike I upgraded to a new kickr core 2 with cog and click. I was basically unable to shift the last two years which really held back a lot of the functionality. Got everything hooked up and tested yesterday and the click shifting is the way, very nice.

We're in that magical time of the year where we could get a foot of snow at anytime even though it was 90 just a few days ago. I'd much rather be outside on the trails, but better to be prepared and ready for the inevitable.
Yep - buying a mini pc to drive my indoor stuff as my old laptop struggled doing two things at once. Youtube + Zwift or Mywhoosh was problematic, to say the least.
I'm using an Apple TV box currently and it works pretty well along with the zwift companion on my phone. Been thinking an upgrade to a dedicated pc to run it is also in order. Like it or not i spend probably as much time zwifting as i do outside in the course of a year.
As an aside - I hate Zwift. Stab me in the eye boring (yes, I know lots of folks love it - just not for me). Most times I do Systm (i.e. Sufferfest videos). During the latter part of the winter I dropped Systm and did MyWhoosh (free) and watched youtube videos. Laptop couldn't really handle the two video outputs.

Even more incongruous - I have a Zwift bike, but have never used it with Zwift. Just erg mode with Systm. Or erg workouts on Mywhoosh.
Funny you mention this. I just got an email about systm and had never heard of it. Just went through the setup, but wasn't sure it was worth a subscription. The videos and ride along options looked kinda cool. I'm a guy that doesn't hate zwift and kind of enjoy it, but it does get boring by the time spring comes. You think it's worth it? I didn't get far enough to see what a subscription runs.
$18 a month or so. About the same as the others. I think you can preview it for a bit, though. Just don't do Nine Hammers first.

Setting up my trainer this weekend, I have a cog and click sitting on the desk. It sounds like it might be an adventure, though - my Saris trainer doesn't really work with the cog and click, so I have to get some third party app to run... sounds like a nightmare.

I'm happy to finally have a gravel bike I can put on the trainer so I can leave my MTB for fall riding... I'm riding Peak 2 Peak next weekend, my first race.

Yeah, I've messed around plenty with these trainers so i finally started fresh with new all compatible equipment this year and look forward to getting the most out of zwift for a change. The click shifting works really well since i also got sick of taking an mtb bike off and on and went with a cheap road bike that turns the pedals just fine, but shifting was pretty much impossible.

Peak 2 Peak looks like a fun race and that must be peak leaves for that area. Beautiful time of year for a race. We have the snow threat this time of year so it's risky to try that this late up here. My wife goes to a conference at Crystal Mountain every year in November and one of these years I'll tag along and ride the area.

Good luck and have fun in the race. What distance is this one?

I'm doing 2 laps, so 25 miles.

The Syd video is up, and it's good. I didn't know how much the 4 top ladies worked together, or that McBride did it on a single speed (!!!)

25 miles is a good distance. That sounds like a pretty fun race.

I've been waiting for her video, awesome it's up. Yeah, they really worked together to get it done. I had my doubts, but am really happy for them. I'll have to give it a watch tomorrow.

My wife knows Kristy Mcbride pretty well and she's an absolute beast. She didn't plan on the single speed, but broke her thumb and couldn't shift. Her buckling on a single speed is otherworldly and the way i understand it she even had a few mechanical issues along the way.

After a few years off I'm signing up for the 50mi (63mi) for 2026. PRs are a thing of the past, but just finishing is a good enough goal for me and then hopefully having enough left in the tank to hang at one of the party aid stations after.

:lmao:

That would not be my first response to a broken hand.
Yup, I'm not sure "if i can't shift I'll just ride a single speed" is where my mind would have went either. That took the tier 2 level fun to about a tier 6 or 7 I'm sure.

Got a chance to watch Syd's video this morning. Really great video and does a good job of capturing what the course is all about. Those ladies are rock stars. I was especially impressed by the signage, the guy that marked the RAMBA section of the course did a great job lol 😉

First training ride for my attempt at the 50 for next year was yesterday. Rode the final 10 miles or so to gage where my starting point is. I was pleasantly surprised and if i can maintain a good training routine i think i can put together a respectable ride.

I picked up the Cannondale and it's nice to have a bike again. Saving lots of time on my commutes. I started riding a spin bike twice a week at the gym last month and I quickly increased my steady state wattage from 220 to about 280. I'd like to get up to 400 but that feels impossible at the moment. I think some short daily rides will help me build that tolerance.

400 is world tour level.
But I weigh 90 kgs and I plan to go up to 95 so the watt/kg ratio would barely be 4. I read most peloton riders have a ratio well above 6. Lance supposed maintained 525 watts at 75 kgs, a ratio of 7.

had tons of cyclists pass by us in the women’s Iron Man on the Big Island today. Saw them train all week. Very cool
I've never been there for the Ironman, it would be cool.

We saw some dolphins once near the swimming turnaround spot, so we put in at the Ironman launch and swam out there with flippers to see them. It was great

Another lady's video (she finished 6th at about 13 hours, so a really strong rider) showed how well the signage showed up at night - it stuck out even more in head/bike lamps.

Picked up an Iron Horse maverick 5.5 over the weekend off Facebook marketplace for $30. Has literally sat in a barn for the last 10 years. I enjoy finding semi decent bikes that could use a second chance at life. Spent yesterday cleaning it up and it looks great. Only issue is that the front shifter is only shifting between 1 and 2, even though it’s a triple chainring. Hopefully just needs some cleaning and lubrication to get that that third chainring (there isn’t a switch on it to change from being a 2x to a 3x).

What prompted by buying a Zwift bike if you hate the app?

I've been on Zwift since like 2015-16? Works great for me. Traffic where I live blows so it's safer and they've tried to spruce it up with new routes, climbs, races, etc. When I was doing 2-3 hour rides it did get mundane but thankfully that was just a phase I have since grown out of :D

To combat the boredom, I watch movies or podcasts. Very easy to not focus on staring at a screen of ugly looking computer riders.

What prompted by buying a Zwift bike if you hate the app?
I wanted something that was dedicated - mounting and unmounting my bike got very tedious. The Zwift bike is way lower cost than anything else. And my wife can ride (we're very different sizes), so a dedicated bike frame won't work. It also works great in erg mode, so I happily rode Systm last winter without issues. So it works for me. Not perfect, but it's good. If I could get the QZ android app working it would be perfect, but I can't get the damn thing to work.

Interesting approach. My wife doesn't ride so I get what you are doing, I just don't have to deal with someone else hopping on and changing the geometry every day. When I was actually training, I'd do the swap every time I wanted to get on the road and it was a right royal PITA. I bought a Poseidon Triton as a slave to the trainer ($700 at the time) and then promptly quit riding roads  My garage is starting to look like a used bike shop.

You guys and your trainers... I spent the weekend camping and climbing mountains with my bike, some bros, and way too many beers. Good times!
What kind of water purification were you doing?
I used a Sawyer Squeeze and a 3L dirty water bag... I was just being lazy and letting it gravity fill while I packed up (in the rain) in the morning. No water at that campsite, so we muled in 7L the night before.

I've already run into a problem with my new bike. The pedals are clip-on so I wanted to take them off and put on flat pedals. I don't have tools at my place but there is an auto body shop across the street. The mechanic was helping me out. He really tried, put a lot of muscle into both sides of the nut and he could not loosen the pedals. This was the left pedal. I'm not sure we were going the right direction but regardless, it's going to be hard to remove this pedal. What is the best way?

I have a set of pedals permanently attached to a set of cranks from too much torque, but things that have worked without going nuclear and wrecking the pedal are a breaker bar and wd40. Another that can work especially if there's any kind of groove in the shaft is a small pipe wrench.

You sure he was going the right way ;( One side comes off backards

I like that none of us immediately know which one. I have to watch a YouTube video every single time. Left is backward per google.

Roll the bike forward and watch the front wheel. Then turn the pedal wrench the other way to loosen.

And many new pedals have a hex wrench socket instead of ledges for a wrench. The hex socket is way easier.

I'm not sure this is the kind of biking most get down with here, but just incase I'll put a link here aswell as the 10k thread.

My days of going hard are over. I'm old and lost a step (probably 2 or 3), but i think i can still do a hard day on the bike with a small goal in mind and a year to think about it. I'm signed up so unless i suffer some catastrophe I'll find out.......

I could see going up for the Mini Marji. I've never ridden the RAMBA trails.

Mini is the last 15-20ish miles of the course (this can change a bit if new trails are added and old dropped). They're technical and challenging, but on their own without the previous 85 miles very doable. If you've ridden Red Trail in Copper Harbor, Doctors or Wildcat in Marquette it's similar, but more of an uphill direction. Overall probably easier from a technical standpoint (harder with all the punchy climbs) than those trails, but a lot of sections on par. No drops, crazy rolls, or anything like that, just lots of roots and rocks.

They're my favorite section of trails in RAMBA, or anywhere really.

If you don't register Friday but decide you want to get in later there's usually plenty of opportunity throughout the year. The Mini is a good ride and probably takes 3-4 hours or so at an easy/medium pace.
