Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (2 Viewers)

That was probably Purdue’s worst played game of the season, they just weren’t sharp.
A win today and another B1G tournament championship would have been nice but I’m not sweating it. I just want them to go on a 6 game winning streak starting next Thursday or Friday 😎

Wow didn't expect Wisconsin to win at all. I thought they were out of the tournament based on recent play (3-8 in last 11 I believe coming into tourney). . Should vault them back in with this win.

ILL

What a freaking 2nd half by the Illini with 58 points. Best half of basketball they've played all season. TSJ is unstoppable going to the hoop. Broke Big Ten Tournament scoring record. Reminds me of early prime Harden in how he can get to the hoop whenever he wants. Think some NBA team will get a steal with his age moving him down even in a down draft (if he's cleared of the stuff in Kansas). I see a more physical Oubre Jr as his floor. Don't the OKC Thunder own like every pick for the next 10 drafts? He'd be a phenomenal fit there.

Still think Illini will be vulnerable in tourney if they get slowed down and with no true PG.

Still salty about Tyler Wahl's 5th foul but happy to extend the season a bit. Wisconsin will likely get a 5 seed or so, winnable first game but unlikely to see the second weekend.

I was at the Illinois game in Madison a couple weeks ago. It was a well-deserved win for Illinois but history doesn't necessarily have to repeat today - Crowl got in foul trouble early and local kid Marcus Damask went off for 31. He was unstoppable that day. Damask had last played in the Kohl Center 5 years earlier in the Wisconsin State Championship game his senior year.

Congratulations Illini fans. 🏆
There were quite a few very good games in this year’s tournament.
Here’s 🍻 to a successful B1G showing in the Big Dance….especially one team in particular.

You could repeat this post for today's game.

MSU gets in for the 26th time. Surprised to be honest, but happily surprised. I think they got placed in the weakest of the four regions.
I thought they were in big trouble with the way the conference tournaments played out. They are over-seeded as usual.

Now that I've typed that out for posterity, watch them run to the Final Four

ILL

Big 10 tourney champs. Still have major reservations of team. (They've slept walk through games all season. Obviously can't do it in a single elimination tourney). Shannon is just a downhill beast. NBA man playing against kids. I think he's perfect for NBA assuming no legal trouble before getting there

A real shame Ohio State didn't get in. Playing really good ball lately. JMO They're deserved it over Michigan State (also beat Spartans H2H on road). And I like Michigan State's talent. Just way too up and down.

Realize odds are really really slim (simply don't have the confidence they won't face plant) but hope to see Illini here in Phoenix/Glendale for Final Four :towelwave:

Agree about tOSU. I think they could have gone further than MSU will. They have the killer instinct that MSU used to have. Glad to see tOSU kept Diebler on as HC. He is a motivator. Looking for good things in the years to come from his teams.

Indiana declined the NIT bid (among several others yesterday) while Ohio State accepted. No judgment from me but I really enjoyed Wisconsin's run in the NIT last season.

Sure they made a nice late season run. But the collapse against Nebraska and their complete disappearance during the middle of the season make this decision look ridiculous.

The Izzo factor plays a role in this, for good reason. Just looking at last season I think MSU squeaked in as a middle seed and I believe were the only Big Ten team that made it to the second week.

Not many kill the portal like Underwood. Not a surprise after what he did with TSJ, Domask, Guerrier, Plummer, Mayer.

Has already scored hometown kid PG Kylan Boswell from Arizona, wing/4 Tre White from Louisville/USC, stretch 4 Calvin Booth's kid Carey from Notre Dame, and shooter Jake Davis from Mercer. Prioritizing shooting and upside👍

Asst coach Chester Frazier is leaving for WVU. illini Alum but not heartbroken. His guys are leaving (Epps/Hansberry/Sinciere Harris) and BU is prioritizing the portal. Again not heartbroken. Booth fits much better next to incoming freshman Morez who will play the 5. Hansberry will make an impact somewhere IMO but he was going to come off the bench at Illinois. Much like Dainja would have been.....which is why he transferred also. Frazier's replacement could also bring in another transfer. Will be a much in demand asst job. Frazier was one of the best paid assistants in CB

Hoping they can land Dante Maddox out of Toledo. Or another scorer.. Seems like might be longshot but Marcus Domask applying for waiver for 6th year.

IMO I think Illinois might be out on AJ Storr. He's going thru NBA process so will be a bit before he decides anyway. He's reportedly wanting a boatload in NIL and likely a 1 year guy

One hell of an off-season for Brad and Orlando Antigua (who replaced asst Chester Frazier) for a team replacing all but 2 players from last year's team

Provided they all make it on campus, it might be the best NBA level talent pool Illinois's had in many many years. Just a monstrous squad.

It was capped off today as 2025 top 10 recruit Will Riley announcing he's reclassifying to 2024 and will be an Illini this fall. Will comment more on others incoming when get time. With Fears coming in next year, Illinois is now getting premier talent they've not frequently seen. Brad & crew had to hit it out of the park coming off TSJ, and they unquestionably have

Gonna be a bumpy road with almost an entire team overhaul but the talent coming in (assuming they all make it to campus) is absurd. For better or worse, so much talent is going to be fighting for limited # minutes

Big 10 doesn't have a clear favorite but with Pac 10 teams incoming, the competition overall is gonna be fierce.

Illinois kicks off season tonight with EIU. The most individually talented roster of NBA caliber talent in a long time at Illinois IMO. Really hope they're able to gel at some point. They've not been playing together for long at all. Complete overhaul outside DGL and Ty Rodgers. What makes NIL and portal a beautiful thing. Can reload in a couple of months

Gonna enjoy watching Kasparas Jakučionis who is projected as a lotto pick by several publications. He's been getting rave reviews in offseason workouts and scrimmages. Will Riley is projected 1st rounder as well. Their new big at center Tomislav Ivesic also a NBa prospect that's gonna have to compete with their prized recruit outta IL in Morez Johnson.

Gonna be a really bumpy ride for Illini with so much new young talent and a complete roster overhaul from last year's Elite 8 team and they've got the heavy hitters in non-conference along with the revamped Big 10. Ole Miss thumped them last week in an exhibition game down there. JMO There's gonna wind up being some unhappy campers with the Illini with so much talent and limited allotment of minutes to go around.

Illinois getting a level of talent this year (both from HS and overseas) that they didn't have a prayer of getting previously. Thanks NIL! Brad has a HUGE incentive to have foreign imports Jakučionis, Ivesic and Will Riley to thrive to continue the international pipeline for thr future .

Purdue, Indiana, and UCLA look like preseason media favorites. Coach Painter is awesome coach and man. I'd agree with putting Purdue over Indiana and Woodson for that reason alone (even with Purdue losing Edey and IU stocking up in portal). Haven't seen enough of UCLA and Oregon to have gauge on.

Looking forward to some college 🏀

ILL

Edit: Ty Rodgers, who started every game on last year's Elite 8 squad, just has been announced is redshirting this season. A smart move for his college career after his meeting with Underwood. He was getting squeezed out on the wing with the offensive wing talent on this team. Someone will have to step up on defense for Illini. Gives him a year to (hopefully) develop some sort of offensive game

Boiler Up
  • Edey out - Enter 7'4" Daniel Jacobsen (13 and 7 last night)
  • Smith is possibly the best point guard in the country - almost a triple double last night to kick off the season
  • CJ Cox and Harris are going to give added athleticism to the point and backcourt and both will see lots of minutes
  • Colvin is instant offense. Hit is first four 3's last night.
  • TKR is going to be a beast on the block
Will be fun to see how Painter changes the style of play without Edey and finds the right line ups night in and night out.

(weird being in this thread)....

Was at Matt Knight Arena to watch the Ducks tip off last night against UC Riverside. Biggest takeaway was that the new court is much better - it has actual green on it, instead of being mostly brown.

For some reason Altman teams tend to struggle on the defensive end until late January or early February. The couple of really good years we've had, the team gelled on that end much quicker. A one-game sample showed they have a long way to go on that end, as UCR got pretty much whatever shots they wanted in the first half.

Things changed when he put Mookie Cook in to the game late in the half and went to a full court press with Mookie up top. This isn't normally their style, they usually run a 3/4 court "annoyance" press designed more to get teams out of rhythm than anything else, but the increased intensity on D changed the game quite a bit and they forced a couple of turnovers. Cook missed most of last year with injury and he only played 7 minutes last night and didn't score, but was interesting to see a different defensive look with him in.

Kwame Evans looks much more confident as a sophomore, I expect big things out of him this year. He was scoring both in the block and out on the perimeter (2-5 from 3) on the way to a 23 (career high) and 6 game.

Former 5* center Nate Bittle missed all of last year and was really rusty early, but settled down and put up 16, 11, and a couple blocks.

Transfers TJ Bamba (Villanova) and Brandon Angel (Stanford) both started and put up double figures. Most notable was how much Angel moves without the ball - Altman's offense can really stagnate at times with a bunch of passes around the perimeter and nobody moving, but Angel cut hard to the rim several times and got hit for layups.

The key to the season will be Shelstad at the point. He didn't do a ton last night, but ran the offense and played mistake-free. If he lives up to his potential this year, we'll need him to score 12-15 every night and get 4-5 assists, then Oregon should be pretty good.

No, I won't be writing up every game! Just throwing out a baseline for the thread.

Maryland's 5* C Derik Queen had 22 points & 20 rebounds in his first game last night. All of the Covid kids are gone now and last year was such a disappointment given the experience they had coming back, so maybe Willard will be able to coach something out of this bunch.

I was at the game so obviously didn't watch the broadcast on B1G+, but the broadcast crew at the table on the court looked like a couple of students. Is that normal? And do you really have to subscribe separately, it doesn't come with Xfinity or YouTube TV or anything?

The Pac 12 Network and the app got a lot of (deserved) crap, but at least I could get it for free and they used professional broadcasters....yes, even Walton.

I'm on the West Coast and get the Big Ten Network via Xfinity. B1G+ is an additional OTT service that doesn't allow me to sync my cable account.

Yeah, same, I have the Network on Xfinity but not able to access the app without paying additionally. Just wanted to confirm I wasn't missing anything, as it looks like a lot of events will only be on the app.

Yep pretty sure they are/were using students. They were using a student for halftime interviews of Illinois game on B1G+.

One of the two broadcasters was a woman who is a current player on the Illinois women's basketball team. And it was not good at all 😭. Had to be her first time doing it.

I'm not sure about having to subscribe separately but found a way to watch it. It is getting pretty crazy how many different services you need to watch all these games

Yeah I know one of our womens players, who finished their game about 90 minutes before the mens game, was the sideline reporter!

Jakucionis as advertised. He's going to be one and done but gonna be a highlight machine as a distributor. Elite passer at 18. Makes everyone around him better. 12-8-13 in his 2nd game tonight.

Will Riley is a straight shot maker that's gonna have a few heat checks this season. Had 31 in his debut game. Has to put on weight but more than likely another 1 and done.

Ivisic has went 14-14 and 18-7 in his first 2 games. Smooth outside stroke for a 7-1 big. Him and Morez are gonna be a very good 5 rotation. Carey Booth, Illinois's 3rd big, has even been mocked in 1st rounds. I don't see that as likely next year but perhaps it is if he sticks another season, anything is possible. Morez Johnson is an absolute tank for being 18 years old.

How great it is for the Illini having a PG (really 2 with Boswell) but especially great having an elite distributor with Jakucionis who is wise beyond his years. Guy is so smooth and only going to get better. Can't say enough good things about him. He's a guy you pay to watch with his playmaking.

Going to be a rocky road over the season for Illinois with their schedule, improvements needed fundamentally & being a young new team that with limited time together but unquestioned this is the most talented collective room of talent they've had in decades.

Don’t have that, but good to know!

Our Terps lost to #15 Marquette last night in a fun game. I think there were exactly 95,001 lead changes. MD was down like 10 points with about a minute left, cut the score to 2 in about 40 seconds, had 2 FTs to tie, and missed them both. I wouldn't say either team played "well", but both tend to turn games into slop-fests. Nice to see the gym in College Park rocking for a November game.

Good measuring stick for Maryland. In what looks to be a middle-heavy B1G, they'll be a headache for many teams.

Michigan beat TCU at home last night - despite 21 turnovers.

Michigan has some decent talent. I reckon they will not compete for the Big Ten championship, but should be a tournament team.

I watched that game. It was a good win for Michigan against a quality program. The B1G is a mess and there's no reason the Wolverines can't win it.

Big win for the Boilermakers tonight!
Just watched the highlights. Huge signs from bama game:
  • Only 3 turnovers
  • Multiple options for instant offense: Cox, Colvin
  • TKR is a beast
  • Smith is going to do something night and night out on the stat sheet

They're sooo much more entertaining to watch this year than the last couple - they run a competent offense, can actually hit 3s reliably, and try hard on defense.

But if they don't get their turnovers under control, they're not going anywhere.

Burnett leading them in scoring in 2 of 3 games is not something I ever would have imagined.

Reality check for the Boilers. Marquette is really good even with their departures.

This team has a lot going for it, but a lot to figure out even with their great guards. Should be an interesting season.
