Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (3 Viewers)

Hoping for just an all around solid performance tonight. The Boilers have had a full week off since the demolishing of Michigan a week ago. IU is reeling and Woodson is on the hot seat. Feels like it will be closer than the -12.5 line.

What's going on with Oregon and Illinois?
I take back anything positive I said about Oregon. They started the year playing very well and beat some quality teams. However, they have regressed horribly. I imagine they will make the tournament but I would be shocked if they make it past the first weekend.

Yup, just a bad, bad team right now. No chemistry, and inconsistency across the board both in results and effort. Bittle with zero points one game, Shelstad puts up a goose egg the next. Bamba continues to brick wide open 3s that the opponents dare him to take while visibly laughing. I could score 18 with Angel guarding me, and I'm currently in a walking boot. They're 204th in the country in 3 point shooting at 33.4%, yet continue to hoist 23 of them a game.

Plenty of time to turn it around, Dana has done it before. But they're trying real hard to play themselves right out of the tournament, especially with that Michigan road trip coming up.

And that same Illinois team came into Eugene earlier this year and dropped 109 on the Ducks in a 32 point win.

MSU was due for a loss at some point. Didn’t figure it’d come from an NIT-bound team. Meh.

Right the ship on Tuesday vs. UCLA

As always

Couldn't watch the Purdue game but looks like they handled business like they should have. Of course it helped with Freeman being gone for the year.

Smith and TKR are quite the combo. Hard to stop both of them...but unstoppable when they are both on like last night.

@SFBayDuck - you about ready for tip off? :lmao:

Yeah, love the weekday 2:00 and 3:00 tip offs. So great for fans of the four west coast schools.

Although the way they've been playing, I might just choose do something more fun than watching them like cold calling. They could lose (again) by 30 with the effort they've shown the last couple of weeks.

Update: Oregon still sucks.

That's actually better than they've played in a few weeks, at least after they found themselves down 14 in the first half. Shelstad looked good, Bittle overcame foul trouble to have a decent game. But defensive breakdowns, a lack of shooting, and ability to get to the rim and actually finish just keep killing this team.

Have faith. MSU is playing like dog **** right now. Probably one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the country. Even their regular FG % is abysmal right now.

Wow, 28.7% is bad! But this is the Ducks we're talking about, the Spartans will shoot at least 10 points higher on Saturday at, checks schedule......9:00 AM my time!

Yea, sorry brother, that tip time blows.

The wheels have fallen off the Illini
It's hurting Maryland's portfolio, too, which is what's REALLY important

Terps at OSU this evening.
It's killing MSU's as well.
I think I saw it was tOSU -2 tonight.
I saw 2.5, but no matter. OSU is desperate and MD needs another road win. The Terps haven't played in a week.
****ing Vegas
The Terps vomited that one away. They all forgot how to shoot in the second half.

Man, if michigan could figure out how to hold the big leads they always seem to have that would be nice. At least they're figuring out how win close games....

No Fears and No Booker. This team is toast today. Glad I have plenty of other things to do today than watch that abomination.

Never fear, Jase Richardson is here!
It helped having his dad Jason in the stands today.
Crazy Brez was an absolute detriment to Oregon in that 2nd half (well... and Jase)

And that’s why this is the most frustrating Oregon team I can ever remember watching. A beautiful first half of moving the ball, rebounding well, giving effort on D, and actually making shots.

And then in the second half they did not a single one of those things.

This sums it up: Shelstad and Bittle combined for 26 in the first half, and neither made a FG in the second half.

Softest team ever, and I mostly mean mentally.

MSU played MSU-style defense in the 2nd half. Izzo was incensed by their lack of hustle and physicality in the first half. Also their shooting % was atrocious. The 2nd half, Aikens and Jase plain shut down Shelstad, and Kohler and Z handled Bittle very well.

Tuesday night at the Brez is going to be special. Tom goes for the alltime B1G record for wins, currently sitting tied with Bobby Knight at 353. Ironically, MSU plays Indiana that night. The Brez is going to be rocking all night. Will be sweet if he can secure the record against the Hoosiers.

So my nephew just called me and told me he was able to secure free tickets for us for Tuesdays game. He works for United Wholesale Mortgage, owned by Mat Ishbia, billionaire owner of the Phoenix Suns and Mercury amongst other things, and who was a member of the 2000 MSU Championship team and a huge contributor to MSU athletics. Mat and his kids are usually sitting courtside next to the MSU bench.

My nephew got tix for Ishbia's private suite at the Brez for the game which he tells me has a fully stocked bar, food pantry and private waiter service. We're going to have a blast.

Tonight should be interesting. I'm fully expecting Michigan to win after what happened a few weeks ago. Purdue needs to play a really good game to keep it close.

Michigan will need to play well for the full game and not turn it over a ton, which they haven't done all year.

Well shoot. I thought the Boilers had this one. Kaufman-Renn had his normal great game until fouling out. Smith started the game on fire but went on a long dry stretch then started hitting but too little too late. And Caleb Furst you are the weakest link.
Good game Michigan.

Awesome time at the Breslin in the Ishbia Suite. Loads of catered food and drinks before, during and after the game.

The game stunk. We couldn’t get over how State refused to dribble drive into the lane and try to get fouls. They had zero aggression last night. Even when they opted to pass around the perimeter there was no movement. And just atrocious FG and FT shooting. Defense was non-existent. Izzo teams cannot play against a zone defense either.

Too bad. I don’t think they win again for a week or maybe two. The Illini game in the road is a loss, Purdue at home will be very tough and umaa and MD on the road are toss ups.

I’m sure Izzo will get some things straightened out but one thing that stood out as I was just looking at them - they are like 350th in 3 point percentage at 28.8%.

That makes it difficult.

Wanna beat MSU?... Make them shoot from the outside, 3-pt line, and play zone defense. At one point I looked and their 3-pt percentage in the game was 10.7%. LOL

They are a good, not great team and ever since the West Coast trip, teams have caught on how to beat them. They lucked out with the win over ORE, but that is because they finally stepped up their defense and Jase had a career game. They had huge defensive holes all night and no low-post defensive presence last night. Loads of easy buckets down low. IU took good advantage of what they were handed on a silver platter. And they hit big shots when it mattered and free throws in critical times.

If they couldn't handle IU's bigs, there is no way they handle Wolf and Goldin.

I'd say that zero bench points and Colvin and Heide are the weakest links. These two have really made no improvements and they are the two biggest keys, besides the core, in order for this team to have a chance.

I'd didn't watch but was following gamecenter. They had this in the bag. It looked like once in the first half and once in the second when they went up by 8 or 10 and both times had 3 to 4 horrible possessions in a row with big turnovers from colvin and wide open misses from Heide. But again...didn't see the game. Just know they had plenty of chances to win.

I wouldn't have thought Greg Gard would be a coach who'd adapt so successfully to the new realities of college hoops but I'm glad he did.
He was on Rome the other day talking about having to be a CEO and worry about NIL/transfer portal etc and then draw up out of bounds plays and coach a team on top of it all. He's certainly doing something right after being picked 12th in preseason.
