Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (2 Viewers)

If the over/under on “Big Ten teams in the final 8” is 0.5, is anyone taking the over right now?
I honestly don't know what to think of the Big 10 right now. There are definitely some talented teams but they are very inconsistent. Which conference is the best right now? SEC? I saw Oregon take down 2 of the top SEC teams earlier this year but yet struggle in the Big 10. I would bet on the over but nothing would shock me.

Absolutely. It's a tough conference to play in. These teams will be battle tested.

Also, I just did a quick search and over the past 20 years a Big Ten team has failed to make the Elite Eight like three times.
Again.....quick search.

No teams ranked in the current Net top 10, but 9 teams ranked 11-34. A bunch of good teams, but not one really good team.

That said I'd take the over - while there sure doesn't seem to be a championship contender, it does seem likely that one of those 9 teams could get hot enough to get to the Elite 8.

If I had to bet on a B1G team to get to the Elite Eight, it would be either Wisconsin or MSU. That said, it would not shock me to see one of the schizo-teams like Purdue or Illinois make a run. Michigan is also in play. And don't forget my Twerpies - they will have the best starting five in any game they play.

I’d bet on at least two big ten teams in the elite 8. Pretty much every team out there has done warts, and there’s enough good options in the big ten that a couple of them will play a few good games in a row.

The reason I thought of this is I was listening to sports radio while driving to Madison for the (awful) Badgers v Ducks game Saturday morning and the hosts posed the question, but they set the number at 1 - meaning to go over you would need to bet 2 teams and under would be zero. They all agreed no one would bet 2 but 1 team was likely. I thought an over/under of .5 is a bit more interesting.

Coincidentally, at the (awful) game on Saturday the Badgers honored their 2000 team that lost to Michigan St. in the final four semi-final. There were three Big Ten teams in the final 8 that year and Mich St. won the tournament. Wisconsin was an 8 seed and upset #1 Arizona, #4 LSU and then had the pleasure of knocking Purdue out of the NCAA tournament having earlier knocked them out of the Big Ten tournament that year (Brian Cardinal's team).

I remember ducking out of my daughter's Girl Scout event to catch the end of the Elite Eight game in a bar at the venue. Poor parenting but the Badgers had been down for a long time.

Oddly enough Brian Cardinal was enrolled for 18 years and still played for Purdue vs the '14/15 Badger final four teams. Pretty sure Diego Pavia referenced this in his lawsuit to get more eligibility.

For real though, I would have no problem betting over 0.5 or 1 B1G Elite 8 teams. UH laid it out pretty nicely above. MSU, Michigan, Wisconsin...maybe Purdue and MD all should have legit shots and I think Oregon, Illinois and maybe UCLA have outside chances if things break right for them. The top 10 is not without flaws by any means. There's still plenty of time for 1 or 3+ of these teams to catch some real fire heading into the big dance.

Its all about matchups in March but SEC elite and Duke just look like more talented teams.

Put a gun to my head, I'd say Maryland. Can shoot from deep and have size. There's probably safer bets in B10 but would rather put my money on the most talented player capable of dominating in Queen.

Just as was the case in the umaa win, MSU’s bench dominated their opponent. For this one, bench scoring:

MSU: 23
MD: 0

Defense kept the highest scoring team in the league (84 pts/gm), to 55.

Izzo’s right, they deserved to win that game.

That's been MD's weakness all season and is what's gonna bite them in the end.

Congrats to MSU.

MD made a good run in the last couple of minutes to tie it up, but their final possession was a mess. Losing on a 60 foot heave is easier to take in a way than if they had lost in a more normal fashion

The B1G tourney is going to be a blast.

Season Low in FG percentage for MSU. And MSU had a better shooting percentage than UMD. That's defense and rebounding. Izzo called it a rock fight to start the presser. I think he was right. I’m just glad to get a tough win in that building and against that crowd. This one had me very concerned .

Yeah, that was not an artful offensive display  Queen had his worst game of the season for the Terps.

In a span of 8 days MSU has beat Purdue, Michigan and Maryland. Hope they aren't peaking a bit too soon.
Would you rather they lost one or more of them? That's a hell of a week beating those three teams.
Where did I say it wasn't?

And do you not agree that teams can peak too soon?
I do not agree, but am willing to be convinced otherwise. I do think the Freshman Wall is kind of real, but I'd rather the team I follow be hot rather than cold going into the post-season.

It wasn’t pretty at times but still nice to snap the 4 game losing skid.
Also very cool to see Rick Mount in attendance and have Jim Jackson and Gus Johnson comment several times about what a great player/shooter he was.

I swear, Maryland can not play well at PSU. I don't care if they had their best five players in history and it was five of us schlubs playing for Penn State. That gym is a house of horrors for the Terps.

Solid win. UCLA is a good team. Home Cooking was much needed.

Maybe that little losing streak will be good in the long run. If they take care of business on Tuesday and somehow pull of the win at IL I think they’ll have a good post season run.

Fun time this afternoon with kids at the USC-Oregon game. Neither of those teams has much talent, nor are they well coached, but at least it was exciting to watch Oregon go on a run late! And tickets were only $11 each, so that’s a win too.

Son is interested in going to Oregon. Good times with college visits.

Dana Altman is a great coach. He has won at least 20 games in each of his 15 years as coach at Oregon. I think I read only 1 other active coach has a 20+ streak as him. Also, he has the 5th most wins of any active coach.

I’m familiar with Dana. The game has passed him by a bit, but in fairness I should have been more neutral on him and harsh on USC. The USC gameplan was…..interesting……and inability to protect their own basket from frequent cherry-picking……bizarre for a D1 team…..

I need a nap after that one
Good win. Crazy they hadn't won there in what a decade?
Yeah. They were like 2-20 million there all-time  It's one of those weird quirks you see in college sports because - while Maryland is rarely an elite program - they certainly have been consistently better than Penn State and you'd think the law of averages would have them at least at .500 there.

The broadcast showed a stat that, of Maryland's 7 losses, the average defeat is by 3.9 points and I think the largest individual margin of defeat is 6 points (to Washington, of all teams).

Now they have to go to freaking Ann Arbor.
