Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (13 Viewers)

That was a good game. Good defense by Maryland. Go Terps!
Yep. Iowa played good defense, too. And with no eye-poking! That was a tough, hard-fought game between two rugged teams.

Maryland still takes too many 3s for my liking without even trying to go inside.

Agreed on all counts. Going 0 for 10 on threes in the second half should have doomed them, but somehow they fought through it.

What in the world is wrong with Nickens? He's shooting below 20% in B1G play. He missed a couple last night where he was wide open, no defender anywhere near him.

A coworker and I were just talking about this. No idea what's going on with him. At least he made that lay up at the end.

I expect the Terps to have all kinds of problems with Ohio State today. The Buckeyes are gonna be pissed after the last time they played when MD crushed them, Matta is a very good coach, and MD expended a ton of energy Thursday night with their starters playing a bazillion minutes.

OSU had to go into overtime on the road on Thursday. I expect today's game to be closer than when they played in Maryland, but I don't think OSU has enough experience to pull out a win today. That said, OSU has a lot of talent. They just lack experience, and no one seems to want to be a leader.

Maryland's weird. They have these flat spells where you wonder which strain of Quaaludes they're on. I expect today to be one of those. As a fan, I hope I'm wrong but this screams "trap!" to me. OSU has some really good players and I think the fans will keep them pumped up.

Damn, that Bates-whatever for OSU is an athlete. Maryland kept their heads, but fell asleep towards the end of the half. They are playing good defense, though.

Hey, and Layman actually made some - dare I say? - tough plays!

Time to get back to basics for the Terps offense. Get the ball upcourt quickly, set up & run a play. Get some points in the paint before missing 10 3 pt shots. Should have blown out OSU, instead, if they were mildly competent at free throws they could have won.

Road win is a road win. I'll take it. As BowieMers alluded to above, you know what helps you win on the road? Going 20 of 23 on free throws.

Layman was really good today. Nickens still can't hit a shot. He may have lost confidence in his shot as well, as he passed up an open three at one point today. Not sure if it's just a confidence thing, but they will need him to heat up if they want to go far in the tournaments. Him hitting some threes would really help those stagnant stretches the offense seems to go through.

Maryland is good. Purdue is good. Indiana is good. Michigan St. is always good. I think we'll learn some more about Wisconsin on Friday. I'm not sure just how good Michigan will be. Is Levert all the way back and healthy? All of these will probably make the tourney. I suspect Maryland, Purdue, Indiana, and Michigan St. are the contenders for the regular season title. Any of them, or maybe Wisconsin or Michigan, could advance to the Sweet Sixteen or even beyond, if things break right.

Then I think you've got the middle of the league in Iowa, Northwestern (might surprise?), Ohio St. One or two of these might make the tourney.

Then the group of Illinois, Minnesota, and Nebraska, before you get to Penn St. and Rutgers.
Looks like I severely underrated Iowa. Overrated Minnesota a bit, may have overrated Northwestern a bit too. Not too bad, so far, otherwise...

W-L doesn't support it, but Minnesota has been playing tough.

Maryland got - what? - 3 points off of their bench Sunday. Nickens looks lost out there. Dodd plays hard and is giving them decent minutes. Ram made his usual 12 second appearance. Even big Cek ran around out there for a while. And Brantley must have gotten caught sleeping with Turgeon's wife - can't even get just 2 or 3 useful minutes out of him just to rest Melo?

I have noticed that Nickens is playing better on defense, which certainly helps. From what I hear, Brantley isn't playing because his defense in practice isn't good enough. But yeah, with Stone in the starting lineup and Nickens not shooting, there is zero offense off the bench. Ram, Ceko, and Dodd won't get 10 between them. We'll just have to hope that defense wins championships.

rutgers :X
How can Rutgers be this consistently bad? They a (if not "the") major program in an area filthy with talent. If all they did was get 3 star talent out of NJ/NYC, they'd at least be decent.
I'd start with the premise that their entire athletic department has been so broken over the past 5+ years, that attracting talent will be tough for a while.
I heard they haven't had a winning conference record since 1990-91. That includes being a member of 4 different conferences (B1G, Big East, AAC, A-10)

You mean the AAC?

That Indiana run to end the first half was one of the crazier things I've seen. I am still blown away that they finally started playing defense. They have been entertaining to watch since they learned a little D.

This Maryland/Nebraska box score at the half is pretty wild. Maryland shooting 48% to Nebraska's 29%. Maryland outrebounding Nebraska 27-15. But Maryland has turned it over 13 times to Nebraska's 2, all for a one point Maryland lead. Oh, and the Terps are only 4 of 10 from the free throw line, something very unusual. We'll have to see if they can settle down and play like they're capable of.

NEB giving the Terps all they can handle. Good game

Took a few years off my life going to the RAC to watch my Illini. A madcap game where hardly a lick of defense was played. Oh and it was Mick Foley night!

Gophers looked as bad as I've ever seen them last night. I couldn't make it 5 minutes in to the second half.

That said, I do hope they give Pitino a couple of more years so we can see what this team looks like when they are upper classmen. If they still stink, then it would be time to move on. But, I do think there is potential there.

5 wins in a row for Bucky, who is making a push to play in the Big Dance (which seemed unlikely a month ago, despite having played in the NCAA tournament every year since 1999.)

They are coming together. They're still missing that big closing run. I'd like to see them just bury someone at the end of a game. However, that's a minor complaint. They're finding ways to win, and a different young player is stepping up almost every time out. Great to see.

Big match in College Park between two good teams. I haven't watched Purdue enough to know what their strengths & weaknesses are. 'Hack (or anyone), got a scouting report to share?

For Maryland, rebounding can mysteriously be an issue for one of the biggest front lines in the nation. It's like they go into group-sleep as a team sometimes. Same with 3 point shooting, though it was good to see Nickens bust out of a horrific slump against Nebraska.

MD plays hard, if not always smart. They make their FTs (I think 6'10" Diamond Stone is like 85%), which has won them a #### load of games both this season and last.

If both Stone & Robert Carter can get off early inside, it's tough for anyone to defend that team because both pass out of the post so well. Trimble needs no introduction at this point, but I have to give props to Jake Layman - who I've ridden unmercifully here and elsewhere - for playing his ### off the last couple of weeks. Sulaimon is a perpetual-motion machine who does a lot of the little things (he came from Duke, after all) even when he's not scoring.

Damonte Dodd and Jared Nickens log the most minutes off of the bench. Dodd is a 6'10" jumping jack with almost no hoops instincts, but he plays hard and gives the starters up front 10-20 minutes of rest per game. Nickens is the wild card - until last game, he has been horrific shooting the ball this year.

Anyway, looking forward to the game. Good luck & health to Purdue.
