Crean was hired when Alford was finishing his first year at New Mexico.  His reputation was at a low ebb after leaving Iowa.  His on-court record in Iowa City wasn't spectacular and he was criticized for how he handled a rape case involving a Hawkeyes player.

Been said, but wow...  For all the talk of ACC is best conference ever and B1G sucks this year, B1G wound up with three in Sweet 16, ACC with one.  Go B1G!

It will be interesting, that is for sure.  Despite his ties to Indiana, UCLA is probably the better job right now (especially with the relative monopoly to a great recruiting base).  They dynamics of Alford to potentially end up in the Final 4 would be interesting too.  The best reason for Alford to leave is that he sees the fans/alumni as trying to pressure him out.  If he takes the team to the Final 4, you would think that would go away, at least for a couple years. 

 
Is Alford really a much different coach than Crean?  Aren't they both a better recruiter than an actual coach?  Do they make the players better?  do they make them play defense? 

Is there a difference in what the boosters want and what the fans want?  I don't think the rest of the B1G would be all that afraid if they hire alford.

 
Heard some rumors that Dane Fife (MSU assistant) is on the short list of interview candidates and that many boosters want him for the position because he does have head coaching experience in the State of Indiana and is very well connected to most if not all HS coaches in the state as well, something Crean was not.

That would surprise me. That's a pretty huge jump going from assistant at MSU to Indiana HC.

UCLA made him pay back salary last year after a bad season. That can't be too good of a feeling.

I hope they go in another direction.

I don't think so. Would much rather see Gregg Marshall (but doesn't sound like he'd leave for IU), Miller from Dayton or the current Butler coach.

 
The other issue - with all due respect to Bloomington, IN - I mean, its LA v Bloomington. I'm sure there are some people who would prefer to live in Bloomington. I would guess that's not a majority.

Expectations in Westwood are every bit as high as they are at IU.   Alford's regular season record at UCLA hasn't been as good as Ben Howland's and he hasn't made a deep run through the tournament either.  If this year's team doesn't win this weekend, Alford's seat will get hotter.

Alford is 52 now and there aren't a lot of jobs that can be considered a step up from UCLA.

 
The more I read about Alford the less I want him as HC. This is from a kid who was in middle school in Bloomington when he won the championship and who copied his little free throw ritual.

Archie Miller would be a great hire for Indiana, he's a heck of a coach.  I was hoping he'd be the replacement for Bo Ryan before I knew how good Gard was.

I thought the same. Disappointing finish, but I was really impressed with that Michigan team all season. I watched them at Wisconsin, and that was a great game. I'm a huge fan of Wagner.

 
Miller took a solid A-10 program under Brian Gregory and took it to the next level.  He's taking on an IU with a base of talent, regardless of who transfers or goes pro, and where the long shadow of Bob Knight is much less of a factor than it was when Crean was hired.

Very excited they didn't force an Alford hire. That to me would have felt like a lateral move from Crean.

I assume Miller is a good recruiter, he's obviously a great coach. He's young and didn't rush into the first big job that was offered which I love.

I absolutely love the move.  The best coaching prospect under 40 years old in the country.  There are always a few bumps in the road during any transition, but the longterm potential for success if Archie continues along the same trajectory is through the roof.

This isn't an Indiana thread, it's a BigTen thread; so I won't spam anymore than this.  I attended the introductory press conference today for Archie Miller on the court at Assembly Hall.

There is absolutely no question Archie Miller is ready for this conference and this job.

"I don't think you come to Indiana if you don't want to live in the neighborhood. If you don't want to move into that neighborhood, then you shouldn't be here. If you like the neighborhood, then you come, and I think, like I've been at a high level at a lot of different spots. I've been with great people. I think I'm very confident that what we do works, and I'd like for the opportunity to try and make it work here."

Melo Trimble declared and hired an agent, so he's done at Maryland. I posted my thoughts on him leaving upthread, but to summarize: I don't blame him. I don't think he'll ever be much (if at all) of an NBA player, but it's probably good for him to get away from college and all the crap he's had to listen to. Ain't no shame in making a living playing in an overseas league, either.

Trimble was responsible for a mini-recovery in Maryland's national standing after Vasquez (&, later, Gary Williams) left. 

 
I don't blame him either, but I hope he has contingency plans because I really don't think the NBA is going to work out for him.

I think, after his sophomore season and the luke warm reviews from the NBA camp he got, he's not under many illusions that he's got many NBA prospects. He's not gonna get taller or much more athletic at this point. 

I think it's interesting to compare him with Steve Blake, who I would never in a million years have thought would have the NBA career he did.
