Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (1 Viewer)

Conference tournaments are stupid. Consider this:

Michigan beats Wisconsin during the regular season, finishes higher than Wisconsin in the BIG standings, and beats Wisconsin for the BIG tourney championship,. They have very similar W-L records (24-9 vs 26-8).

Of course Wisconsin ends up a #3 seed and Michigan a #5 seed for the NCAAs

IMO Michigan fans should be complaining more about Purdue getting a 4 seed above you. That one I don’t get.

I guess my point is less outrage and more that for some conferences their tourney has meaning b/c it is life or death. Teams that win get a berth where they otherwise could not.

If a team like Michigan can't even improve its NCAA seeding, then even having the BIG tourney at all makes zero sense (other than extra revenue of course).

Auburn loses in semis of SEC but still overall #1? smh

BINGO!

The BTT hasnt meant diddly squat for the NCAA tournament for years.

It’s fun to go to because you get to basically see almost the entire big ten conference play at least once in 4 days. But the outcome doesn’t mean jack when it comes to seeding. Been that way for years. All it really does is basically solidify the committees pre-BTT seeding. One reason for that is the timing of the tourney. It’s purely for money and ratings.

The committee had Michigan at #17 overall and Purdue #14 overall. Seems it would be very easy to just switch the two, unless CBS has a deadline for getting the graphics for the brackets done. Anyway, still BIG champs

Good point. I was speaking more in general.

Doesn't matter now, though. Tip it off and play the games.

And to stick them both into playing Thursday games. I get there are alot of moving parts but that's harsh as well.

Yea...we got super lucky. I guess that's payback from all the horrible seedings we got in the 80s and 90s.

Buzz Williams to Maryland? Interesting hire. I saw him up close when he was at Marquette for about 5-6 years. People were surprised when he left Marquette for Virginia Tech, a move the local alumni considered a step down in prestige and opportunity. His reputation is that he's good at rebuilding programs that are in the dumps, but often rubs people the wrong way and has a hard time staying put. I'm not sure he's the right fit for the Terps but they definitely could do worse. He does win games and I believe has had success everywhere he's gone.

Head-scratcher for me. Not so much for why Maryland would do it, but why would Williams? I get that he was at a football school, but he's coming into a horrible situation. Every single player I could name is out of there - including one I didn't even know was there because he got poked in the eye and missed the entire season. MD's top commit for next year de-committed yesterday. Williams has no ties to the area that I'm aware of, so it's not like he can call in favors to quickly restock the roster. And there's no AD in place.

I have no clue what his working environment, funds, or pay was at A&M.

I know the guy wins, but I've heard the same as you that he can be a pain and wears out his welcome.

From a Maryland perspective, this feels like a "satisfy the boosters with a name" move to me.

I wanted them to basically punt the next year or two and hire Tony Skinn from George Mason. He's from the area, coached at MD for a couple of years, and - I think - can build a good program.

ILL

Illini have looked great so far. Beat Texas Tech w/o Tomi. David Mirkovic is one of the best freshman in the country. Keaton Wagler a steal as a freshman that was ranked in the 150s. Andrej Stoiakavic played great in his 2nd game in their TT win. Boswell gives them senior leadership and he's been great on both ends. The team just has to get healthy. Theyve been battling injuries since this summer

I just watched some Maryland kid sustain a NASTY looking injury after crashing to floor after a dunk . I don't recommend watching if squimish.

Have watched all Michigan's games and I absolutely don't see see it with that starting front line and Cadeau (sp) at PG. That Frontline doesn't fit together at all ....even if they could be their 3 best players. HUGE fan of their freshman McKenney. Tons of talent on team that gonna have to make change in that starting lineup IMO. I think eventually they'll have to decide between Morez/Mara as their starting 5 and move Yaxel to the 4

Purdue looks like in class of own but should be another great year in Big 10 and likely a lot deeper in talent this season

Agree on Michigan. I liked the end of game lineup of Cadeau, McKenney, Roddy, Yaxel, and Mojo. The 3 bigs are all good but not very effective all together.

If you're squeamish about injuries at all, I recommend not watching the Pharrel Payne incident in Maryland's game against Marquette yesterday. Hopefully it looks worse than it was in terms of keeping him out.

I made the mistake of not looking away quickly enough. It looked brutal.

Purdue demolished a good Akron team who's made the NCAA tournament the last few years, on the heels of the big win at Bama. This team has added so much depth it's ridiculous.

All Americans - 4 year starters
  • Braeden Smith
  • Fletcher Loyer
  • Trey Kaufman - Renn
Returning Key Contributors
  • Gicarri Harris and CJ Cox - back court ball pressure with great offensive capabilities - both sophomores
  • Daniel Jacobsen - 7'4 - broke his leg during the second game as a freshman. Great skills...another 7 footer for Painter
New Pieces:
  • Oscar Cluff - portal big man - huge land for Painter - great passer and rebounder
  • Omar Mayer - This kid is already stacked. Can take over at PG and let Smith play off the ball. Already making a huge impact
  • Jack Benter - freshman red shirt - this is the next Brian Cardinal type of player who can do a bit of everything.

It was last week, but Purdue's demolishing of a good Texas Tech team was pretty awesome. The second half of the first half was some of the best basketball I've seen in quite some time.
Getting Cluff and a healthy Jacobsen are huge for this team. Omer Mayer could be really good. Crazy that he's already played pro ball and is only a Freshman. Tough to see Colvin leave, but he wasn't getting PT last year and probably wouldn't get much this year either. Was cool to see him hit the game winner for Wake.

Jeremy Fears = Tarheels dagger

Even though the score got down to 3, game really wasn’t even close

Kid playing at a B1G Player of the Year level right now. Team already playing at a mid season level.

Is it just me or was Michigan +4000 for the natty yesterday and today they are +1000?

Did it really drop that much after a 40 point win over the Zags?
The 30 point win over Auburn is probably also factored in. With transfer portals and freshman, I think when beginning of season odds are being set, there’s not always a ton of confidence because there’s so much unknown about these teams. Michigan just went through 2 ranked teams like they were Eastern Kentucky and Monmouth. That’s worth a lot more than any preseason predictions and estimations about what a totally revamped team might look like.
