Day Two Practice Notes; Nall Tweaks Hamstring
by Chris Brown, Lead Journalist Last Updated: 7/29/2006 5:06 PM ET
Bills quarterback Craig Nall suffered a hamstring injury in practice Saturday afternoon. It happened during 11-on-11 team work. He rolled to his right found no one open, came back to the left and right when the play was going to be blown dead he pulled up and grabbed his left hamstring.
He did not take another snap the rest of the practice session and left the field under his own power to the locker room before the team workout was over.

QB Update morning
The reps again were relatively even among the quarterbacks in the morning. Kelly Holcomb was short a rep in the first set of 11-on-11 team work. The coaching staff mixed up the rotation a bit in terms of how many reps per guy. On day one through a 21-play session it was mostly three reps and rotate out. They did that twice through and then on the last three plays they'd each get one play apiece.
On Saturday they changed it up in the first seven-on-seven session. They went three reps each the first time through, then two reps each the last two times through. After that they went through the same rotation as one day one.
"That's sort of the plan," said Jauron of the even rotation. "We'll let them compete and it will take a while. I don't really have any indication as to how long, but hopefully someone is going to rise up and clearly be the guy."
Again with a good amount of run calls in the 11-on-11 work, comparing the quarterbacks was an inexact science. Craig Nall had some good reads and delivered the ball in rhythm effectively, but he would also have a couple of late reads and the ball wouldn't get there in an efficient manner. Overall there was more good than bad from Nall who seemed to be making a concerted effort to work the middle of the field and the flats.
Kelly Holcomb was sharp with his reads, but the ball or the receiver was being challenged by a defender a good portion of the time. It seemed as though the defensive backs and linebackers were able to make more plays on Holcomb's passes that of the other two signal callers. Holcomb had a pass over the middle tipped by London Fletcher while another pass intended for George Wilson was tipped and intercepted. To his credit he followed the interception up with a nice throw over the middle to Jonathan Smith.
J.P. Losman had some strong throws. There was a pretty ball he put down the seam over a couple of defenders to Brad Cieslak. He hit Martin Nance a couple of times over the middle as well. Losman had one pass that was almost intercepted along the sideline when it was bobbled by the receiver, but Matt Bowen couldn't come up with it. Earlier he did throw an interception in the flat when Jabari Greer jumped the route and ran it back for what would've been a touchdown.
No pads
Bills head coach #### Jauron did not have his players put on the pads for the second straight day. So in their first four practices there will be no work in full gear.
"We'll come out in pads on Monday," said Jauron. "They've been away from us for about five or six weeks. I like to get them back into the basics and start teaching again. We like to start a little bit slower in terms of the pace of the teaching. We need to reintroduce them to how they have to practice with each other. We've got plenty of time in training camp and through the preseason to get the pads on. There's no big rush."
Greer making plays
Jabari Greer, who had a nice pass breakup yesterday had two interceptions in the morning workout. The first was tipped by Keith Ellison and Greer ran it back the other way. And the second one he would've taken back for six for sure as there was no one to defend the takeaway. As Greer emerged from the locker room after practice his head coach gave him a compliment.
"Nice work out there," said #### Jauron.
Tight ends and backs
The tight ends and running backs were more involved in the passing game today. Willis McGahee had a couple of receptions. Shaud Williams, Lionel Gates and Anthony Thomas all made receptions in the morning session.
Robert Royal was the most frequent target among the tight ends though Kevin Everett and Brad Cieslak had catches as well. Royal seems to do a good job of separating from the defender or finding a spot in a zone.
Spikes watch
Takeo Spikes participated in the individual portion of practice and got some 7-on-7 snaps, but did not participate in 11-on-11 team work.
"I'm not getting too high and I'm not getting too low," said Spikes. "I'm taking each day for what it's worth."
Youboty nicked
Rookie cornerback Ashton Youboty, who on day one was working with Kiwaukee Thomas in the third pairing of cornerbacks, did not see much action in 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 team work.
"Ashton tweaked a hamsting a bit today, so he missed some time," said Jauron.
Working opposite Thomas in Youboty's place was James Bethea.
These practice notes will be updated periodically throughout the day when there are double session practices. Be sure to look for more following the afternoon workout.
