BJ Ryan To The DL (1 Viewer)

B.J. Ryan, RP TORNews: The Blue Jays placed closer B.J. Ryan on the 15-day DL on Sunday with an elbow injury, a day after he blew his second save in his past four chances. Ryan, whose latest blown save came in Saturday's 10-7 loss to Detroit, is to be examined by Dr. James Andrews in Alabama on Monday. The left-hander has two blown saves in five chances this year, after he blew only four saves in 42 opportunities last season. Setup man Jason Frasor will take over in the closer's role. The Blue Jays called up right-hander Jamie Vermilyea from Triple-A Syracuse.Analysis: Dr. James Andrews is usually the bearer of bad news, especially with elbow issues. Pick up Frasor immediately in any league you need a closer. His might not be dominant as the closer, but the contending Blue Jays will get him ample opportunities for the time being -- at least two weeks. Ryan's is out for April at least and bad news Monday could mean a much longer absence. Vermilyea is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues.

Grab Jason Frasor NOW!!! Some will say Janssen, but don't let that 2 inning save the other day fool you, Frasor is the guy to have.

Frasor should already be gone in most 12+ team leagues...
Why is that? Unless you use holds and have large rosters. I doubt 12 team leagues with less than 26 man rosters have that many setup guys. If 12+ team leagues have 30 man rosters and use holds, then yes. In shallow leagues that don't use holds, not too many setup guys are rostered.

THanks - just got Frasor -and now I will go work him into a trade as I don't need another closer...........

AWESOME POSTING

Unfortunately, I missed him in my 16 teamer. I was on this morning reading news and then was cuddling with the girlfriend for an hour. Just long enough to miss the news and miss the opportunity to grab him. I did get him in a 10 teamer but I'm already stacked with closers there. I might have to drop Al Reyes if BJ is out for an extended time.

He's sitting on our wire, but Ryan is locked on my roster and I can't put him on DL and free up a spot for Frasor until tomorrow.

If I miss him, can you all suggest some MRs who might be available in a ten teamer who I could slot in awhile?

You don't have anyone else you can drop? You could potentially be missing out on a long-term closer. Elbow problems this early in the season are not good.

I guess I can drop Estrada. He's locked, but I think I can still drop him effective for tomorrow. In the meantime ESPN is"working on it"...eta. done. thx, gaddis.

I dropped Adrian Gonzales in one league so I could pick him up. I have Morneau starting anyway. But my point is me could be a huge pickup. I'm wondering why he's not pitching today in a save situation though??

yes, right after i did the drop, is see marcom got the save. did we take the wrong guy? that would add insult to injury when we had to drop another player.... :lmao:

Man the Blue Jays are getting hit hard with injuries. Ryan, Reed Johnson (may need back surgery), Troy Glaus

Of course I have Ryan (and Johnson) on my team and waivers to count for the upcoming scoring week were completed this am, guess I go with just 1 RP this week, we can start 1 or 2

I'm guessing that they rested Frasor today in the early game since he threw 30 pitches in 1.1 innings last night. Anyone think Marcum might pick up any more saves in a closer-by-commitee approach?

well well, marcum.

frasor pitched the day before but not on friday.

30 pitches isn't that much to have him unavailable today, esp after not pitching friday.

not sure here, keep a close eye out.

I agree. I saw he pitched yesterday 1.1 innings. 30 pitches is a lot for such a short outing. But not enough to really have to hold him out a game when you are only up by one run on the Tigers!I'd want my best man out there to close! I picked up Marcum in my 16 team league since I missed out on Frasor. I'm not gonna chase after him in my other leagues where I already grabbed Frasor. I guess I'll just wait and see what happens. Bad thing is, they are off Monday so we won't know much until at least Tuesday.

Marcum pretty much sucks, but who knows with these managers. I would think Frasor and Accardo are the top-2 guys.

Here's rotoworlds view..........

Shaun Marcum, not Jason Frasor, was given the first save opportunity with B.J. Ryan on the disabled list and converted it successfully with a scoreless ninth against the Tigers.

Frasor needed a day off after throwing 30 pitches Saturday, so Marcum started the ninth in a 2-1 game and retired Placido Polanco and Gary Sheffield before striking out Magglio Ordonez to finish it. Both manager John Gibbons and GM J.P. Ricciardi have indicated that Frasor would close with Ryan out, so Marcum isn't someone to go get in AL-only leagues. Maybe he and Victor Zambrano would be worth picking up in the event that Ryan needs surgery.

I'm probably gonna drop Marcum since I can use a catcher with Ross sucking and Bard down. But it really bothers me that they didn't try and use Frasor today. I understand he threw 30 pitches. But with tomorrow off, and the fact that it took him 30 pitches to get through 1.1 innings.............I'm wondering if he's really the anwser.

We will find out soon enough if Frasor is up to the task. I believe he is.

Per Rotoworld:

The Blue Jays expect B.J. Ryan to miss 4-6 weeks due to a strained ligament in his left elbow.

Ryan avoids Tommy John surgery for now, but that still may be a possibility if he doesn't recover as hoped. Jason Frasor is set to occupy the closer's role in his absence. Shaun Marcum and Victor Zambrano are the fallbacks. Apr. 16 - 5:11 pm et

AB's View (FWIW):This sounds like he could still be headed for TJ surgery. My best guess is that Toronto is hoping he recovers sufficiently to help them this year, he comes back for a couple of weeks, clearly is not the same and goes under the knife. Andrews probably told him that there is a chance it will heal on its own, so that is what they are hoping for, no matter how remote. This is pure speculation on my part

Frasor went for $38 last night in my league, where you pay actual cash in blind bidding for FAs every two weeks.

If Ryan is back in a month, that will be the most expensive 5-7 saves in my leagues history.

So Frasor didn't close today's game...Marcum did.
Frasor threw 30 pitches the night before.edited to add: oops, sorry, didn't scroll up far enough from last post to see it was already mentioned...

Frasor got the Save tonight against Boston working 1 1/3 on 8 pitches, no one reached base, and no K's.

Frasor seems to be the MAN

Ryan just transferred to 60 day DL, FYI.
WOW - I wonder if he is hurting more than the BlueJays are letting on - I would guess so
Well who got added to the roster is the question. He's been out for what, 10 days already? He's still back before the all-star break theoretically, after rehabing and what not. But agreed, not especially encouraging news. I'm a Yank fan, but that a shame for BJ, he could deal and it was a pleasure to watch him deal.
