Black People and Columbus Day - Gotta Be Mixed Feelings, Right? (1 Viewer)

So if Columbus was first and he arrived here BEFORE Amerigo Vespucci, why aren't we the United States of Christopher?

It was a mistake. Vespucci went to the New World in 1499 and 1502. He wrote two books. The first person to publish a map of the New World, a German cartographer, knew about Vespucci but not Columbus. And so he named it after him.

Amerigo just has a nice ring to it.

Amerigo, #### yea!

i blame Columbus for Vietnam and Iraq!
I don't know about that. I was mostly referring to the acts committed by Columbus and his men according to their own accounts in letters.
And I was referring to the claim that Columbus lead blacks to slavery. Slavery was a worldwide institution which was going to happen in America no matter what Columbus did or didn't do. Columbus did what was done back in the day. The acts of Columbus were mostly on the shoulders of the country of Spain who commissioned him and profited off his acts. He did some nasty things and does not deserve a holiday, but he was not Hitler either.

Slavery existed in the Americas long before Columbus.

Definitely did not learn it from the Blame-America first wing nuts in this forum. Here is a place to start your journey to at least having some knowledge on the subject. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_slavery

Wait, I thought blacks were the only race/ethnicity enslaved in the last 5000 years? Did I miss something?

To answer your question, the brothers will do anything for a day off work.

There should really be no mixed feelings at all. Guy was worse than Hitler.
You really thought that one through.
His murder numbers don't stack up to Hitler's, but adjusting for the era he was pretty close.
He's like the Home Run Baker of genocide.
This
I was thinking more Wahoo Sam. One of the eras strongmen, but one season / achievement that shines above the others (murdering like 16 hr balls in 1902 or something)

I think the Native Americans might have more cause to be offended.
:goodposting:

I use to work for a bank that opened a branch on a reservation. We stopped getting the day off when we opened that branch.

Pro - Day off from work.

Con - Led to ancestors becoming slaves.
To be honest, without said slave trade, these defendants wouldn't have the day off either. I mean, unless they celebrate C Day in Western Africa.

Just another silver lining for Ann Coulter to ##### about.

Wait, Columbus was American?
Was talking about the history of slavery, not Columbus. Still don't get the connection between blacks and Columbus made in the OP. Most of his crimes were against the indigenous people of the Bahamas. Seems like some are of the belief America was the center of all slavery and all slaves were black and somehow Columbus is to blame.
