I'm confused. Was Sierra flying the helicopter or operating the tower telling the pilot where to fly?Keep any DEI or political or opinion blame talk out of this.

DOE designs and builds super computers for research purposes and national security. We are always looking for eligible candidates to help with our mission. A few years ago, our HR team brought us a candidate to interview. His credentials were barely acceptable . His name is “Sierra” and he has seven different personalities. I did not know any of this before the interview. I reported back that I did not feel he was stable as did everybody else in the interview. HR overruled us and hired Sierra (to check off boxes). As I said, Sierra has SEVEN different personalities. Sierra can only focus on one project at a time. From a professional standpoint, many of her other personalities do not understand computer science or computer engineering.
Unfortunately, DOE is always working on the latest and greatest super computers for multiple labs and multiple agencies. This environment is NOT acceptable for somebody that can only deal with one project at one time. I hate to put it out there, but my field is inundated with maladaptive coping techniques as the first resource. I have been picking up for “Sierra“ and I have fought HR at every level and documented the problems. I intend for this to stop immediately!
I am willing to work with individuals who are willing to work for themselves. I will not make exceptions for character faults that the employee has not addressed or is willing to address themselves
Keep any DEI or political or opinion blame talk out of this.

ATC is a tough job. I worked adjacent to ATC for a couple deployments as an ISR controller. It was 12 hour shifts of being tied to a desk without the ability to walk away without someone taking your seat. Maybe you can get away with a 1 minute bathroom break, but its a demanding job.Somebody commented today that you want very smart ATC. I would think that you would want to recruit the guys killing it in the gaming world. The lingo while complicated on the surface probably isn't much more difficult than learning an NFL playbook which most SEC non grads seem to accomplish.

Not everyone has the ability to sit down for 8-12 hours straight.
I haven't seen anything reported yet, but I don't think much will come from the CRJ jet black box. They changed runways on decent and thought they had a clear landing airstrip. Blackhawks aren't easy to see and I'm guessing if/when they saw the helo it was too late. What is the latest on what they were able to find on the "black box" recorder?
Black Hawk helicopters are not typically equipped with “black box” flight recorders as would be found in commercial aircraft, meaning that ascertaining the definitive cause of the crash will be “up to external sources and witnesses to piece together.”

from the NYPOST reporting.

Black Hawk helicopters are not typically equipped with “black box” flight recorders as would be found in commercial aircraft, meaning that ascertaining the definitive cause of the crash will be “up to external sources and witnesses to piece together.”
On Friday morning, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth spoke with "FOX & Friends" about the fatal crash, calling it "completely unacceptable." Hegseth emphasized that the Black Hawk helicopter’s black box, which has yet to be recovered, will give the DoD crucial insights on internal communications.
Great stuff. Thanks for all the info you've shared and thanks to Joe for keeping this open.Update from blan

A pilot with 20+ years in the air force was on the radio yesterday, saying that DCA is one of the worst places to land due to light pollution, and the only reason it's still open is for the convenience of our congressmen. Is that too political?
my place in the states is pretty much next to camp lejeune. we get training flights overhead all day everyday. i spoke with a former copter guy who said they all have recorders and most, if not all, have dash cams. many of them are equipped with data erasers, either upon ejection of personnel or manually. i suppose this is in the event of a crash event behind enemy lines. i wouldn’t think these particular recorders were erased and i’m curious if there was a camera recording. but, if you speak to 20 guys you’ll likely get 20 answers. edit to say, we get a lot of osprey. not sure what type of copter the one involved was….i need to check it.Do any of our military guys know this answer? Do blackhawks have a black box or something similar?
You get used to it. Also have to use the phrase "say again".It is clear to me from the audio that I would continually be saying “please repeat”. I don’t know how those folks do it.

The video culdeus posted clearly shows the helo at almost 400 ft at time of collision. This seems like news (from the previous NYT article):
"Before a helicopter can enter any busy commercial airspace, it must get the approval of an air traffic controller. In this case, the pilot asked for permission to use a specific, predetermined route that lets helicopters fly at a low altitude along the bank on the east side of the Potomac, a location that would have let it avoid the American Airlines plane. The requested route — referred to as Route 4 at Reagan National — followed a specific path known to the air traffic controller and helicopter pilots. The helicopter confirmed visual sight of a regional jet and the air traffic controller instructed the helicopter to follow the route and fly behind the plane.
But the helicopter did not follow the intended route, the people briefed on the matter said. Rather, it was above 300 feet, when it was supposed to be flying below 200 feet, and it was at least a half-mile off the approved route when it collided with the commercial jet."
Obviously it should have been done a long time ago. All the reports about this airspace look insane. If POTUS wants Marine One to cross the Potomac through that airspace, well, then the ATC at DCA will have to shut it down to plane traffic.
There was a push to close it after 9/11 due to all of the airspace restrictions required around it. Apparently there's also pressure to keep certain areas clear due to noise pollution concerns, which probably makes it marginally worse. It definitely seems like a logistical nightmare for several reasons. I read years ago the area around EWR is more crowded, but that might be only considering commercial flights.DCA is one of the worst places to land due to light pollution, and the only reason it's still open is for the convenience of our congressmen.
What I haven't seen any explanation for is why the helicopter rose from 200 to close to 400 feet prior to the crash. There has to have been a reason. From having heard the ATC comms and the reconstructed radar, it seems pretty clear that this is on the heli pilot
Good but not enough for those runways. Needs to follow route 5 from the northern tip rather than dropping due south.
