Needs to keep out of this. Stop trying to force Washington to change their name.

I was raised a skins fan. I think they should change their name. Would it be okay for an expansion team to go by blackskins, brownskins, off-whiteskins, etc.?

He needs to stay out of the plastic surgeons office also. Face is stretched almost as tight as Jerry Jones.

I thought it was really bizarre that NBC would take a position on the issue. It's none of your business. Stay out of it. I thought Snyder's letter was a lot more thoughtful and interesting and compelling than what Bob had to say anyway...

He did the same thing last year after the KC incident with pushing gun control. Keep your ####ty politics away from sporting events!

I actually agree with most of his points, but I also don't think Sunday Night Football is the right place for it. I'm getting a little tired of his rants.

NBC as a whole has taken up this issue. Florio and PFT (now owned by NBC) has been banging the drum. Peter King an NBC contributor has gone the "I won't use the team name" route. Dungy went off on the team name last week.

I have no horse in this race. I just went back and listened to Costas. Snyder's letter was far more compelling.

But even if Snyder's letter was less compelling it wouldnt matter; the guy can name them the Fighting Irish for all I care. He owns it, have a ball...

You guys want politics off TV, but yet you drag it into the Shark Pool? Take to the the free for all.

I just wish people would put more passion into changing things that actually matter. In the big scheme of things, the name of a professional football team doesn't matter. We've got much bigger problems in this city / country / world than this.

No doubt there is a large segment of the sports press that grew up wanting to be Woodward and Bernstein and somehow ended up covering bats and balls instead; and so they're almost desperate to make an impact and change things.

....and often times that leads to a piling on for a topic du jour. Well, this Redskins thing is it. It's sad really.

I wouldn't say that NBC has "taken up" the issue. After all, they are still using the "Redskins" name and they're still prominently displaying the Native American logo.

When those two things stop happening, then it's a sure sign that NBC has taken a stand.

Does anyone take Costas seriously? Seriously? He needs to go the way of the dodo. He wants his face on tv for any reason at all.

since we are talking about what we don't want to talk about, and it is in play...

florio pointed out some issues with the letter... the most compelling for me excerpted below...

"Perhaps the biggest problem with Snyder’s letter comes from the effort to pull George Allen, father of current Redskins G.M. Bruce Allen, into the debate.

“In 1971, our legendary coach, the late George Allen, consulted with the Red Cloud Athletic Fund located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and designed our emblem on the Redskins helmets,” Snyder writes. “Several years later, Coach Allen was honored by the Red Cloud Athletic Fund. On the wall at our Ashburn, Virginia, offices is the plaque given to Coach Allen — a source of pride for all of us.”

Here’s the thing. George Allen created the Red Cloud Athletic Fund.

And so Snyder makes his case for keeping the name based in part on consultations Allen had with a group he created regarding the design of the current logo. Snyder then provides justification for the ongoing use of the name and the logo by pointing out that Allen was later honored. By the group he created."

another problem with letter...

this same native american organization that snyder cited in support of continued use of the name, denounced it, and said he misrepresented them in other ways (OOF!)... no matter what side you are on, the letter seems to have backfired in a PR sense...

“As an organization, Red Cloud Indian School has never — and will never — endorse the use of the name ‘Redskins,’” leadership of the school wrote in a letter to the Washington Post. “Like many Native American organizations across the country, members of our staff and extended community find the name offensive.”

Where is Costas during the world series ranting about Atlanta and Cleveland?

Where is Costas on Saturday's ranting about Illinois and Florida State?

Did Costas mention Kansas City or Seattle tonight?

Yeah, if Costas on tv means big money... spread the wealth and plaster his face with these other sports including the NHL.

I really don't care about his thoughts on race, native american, guns, or anything that isn't football discussion. I guess everyone feels they need to comment after Obama decided he needed to make it an issue.
Washington's football team isn't a football topic?

I have no problem with Costas speaking his piece, nor with the Redskins name. They just need to change their logo to this
Boehner would be a better fit as the logo for the Syracuse Orange. The Redskins should change their logo to this...

This is a nice shade and almost as good as cryin' Johnny

ETA: The Orange were once referred to as the Orangemen and Orangewomen until a group of overzealous students formed the SALOL (Student Army for the Liberation of Oompa Loompa's)... or was it the LASOL?

1. In a time machine back to the year 1995?

2. Is he supposed to be offended on behalf of birds?

The Kermit the frog version of Matt Lauer. None of the three are respected by football fans
