Doing the right thing? You people are hilarious. There was a time when most African Americans didn't find "negro" to be offensive. Can you imagine an NFL team called The Negroes?Always take polls with a grain of salt, but if most Native Americans don't find this offensive, what does it matter what white people think?

Sometimes, doing the right thing means going against the majority.
Especially when he said most Native Americans polled were not offended. Whose cause is this, and for what gain? Why not bring the issue of tens of thousands of homeless native Americans to light instead of ranting about the nickname of a sports team? i don't get it.
What takes away his right to do that? I'm guessing his producers had a clue what was up.What gives him the right to do that, NFL should step in and tell him to stop using SNF as a forum to express his views.
Wow, um, I don't believe I have to explain the above.1. In a time machine back to the year 1995?Where is Costas during the world series ranting about Atlanta and Cleveland?
Where is Costas on Saturday's ranting about Illinois and Florida State?
Did Costas mention Kansas City or Seattle tonight?
Yeah, if Costas on tv means big money... spread the wealth and plaster his face with these other sports including the NHL.
2. Is he supposed to be offended on behalf of birds?

NOT at all the case - why would you post such drivel?Christian is a derogatory term for followers of Christ.
So telling the Native Americans what should and shouldn't offend them is what is best for them? Can you please explain this better because I am not following you. There was a time when most African Americans didn't find "negro" to be offensive.Always take polls with a grain of salt, but if most Native Americans don't find this offensive, what does it matter what white people think?

True, but just because a vocal minority decides to take a crusade on the name doesn't mean it should be changed either. If a black person enjoys being called the N-word, that's their business. I won't criticize them for that.
But that doesn't justify using the word.
Those aren't mutually exclusive?True, but just because a vocal minority decides to take a crusade on the name doesn't mean it should be changed either. What if the majority got all vocal about the possibility of it being changed?
You are comparing a word that has caused countless murders and acts of violence to a name of a football team that doesn't even offend the majority of native Americans that term refers too.

Why would he rant against names that aren't slurs? The college examples given are asinine and Seattle is a gigantic reach. None of those three at least are anywhere within being possibly anywhere near the same ballpark as a slur.Where is Costas during the world series ranting about Atlanta and Cleveland?

No, but perhaps the Fighting Irish...in which his network makes big, exclusive $$$ on. Or is it ok to use blatantly-negative ethnic stereotypes?2. Is he supposed to be offended on behalf of birds?
Those are racist potatoes.Boehner would be a better fit as the logo for the Syracuse Orange. The Redskins should change their logo to this...I have no problem with Costas speaking his piece, nor with the Redskins name. They just need to change their logo to this

I dont think Snyder is in this particular fight for the money. The team could turn this into a windfall if they wanted to. Just hold a contest for the new name and charge people 5 bucks per entry. Also the sales of the new name and logo could bring in mega bucks if they play it right.
He mentioned the other sports, Hockey as well.Mario Kart said:Where is Costas during the world series ranting about Atlanta and Cleveland?

Because times change and things that were acceptable become unacceptable and this has actually been talked about quite a bit by media for at least three years (openly and more adamant).Mr. Retukes said:A better question is "Why didn't Costas say one bad word about "Redskins" for the past 40 years?"Mario Kart said:Where is Costas during the world series ranting about Atlanta and Cleveland?

Nothing changed other than our president deciding he didn't like the name and voicing the opinion it should be changed. so if somebody wants to buy something at a reservation, and doesn't refer to a native american indian as a redskin, it isn't because it is an inherent racial slur... it is because of white progressive patronizing?wormburner said:Over time, the black community changed the vocabulary of their culture themselves, without the help of whites. The people don't set any rules anyways. Never have, never will.I love watching right wingers whine. PC....liberal media.... More important things to worry about....
Guess what dinosaurs... The world is changing, you don't get to set all the rules anymore.
Plenty of causes take time to reach some sort of critical mass. Costas has been on the air since the early 1980's. Why not bring it up then?
Finally, somebody going to bat for our fine feathered community... because CLEARLY the NFL franchise name that should be under the most scrutiny is the Arizona Cardinals... either change the color of the beak to RED (Cardinals - as we all know - do not have yellow bills), or change the team name to the Arizona Pyrrhuloxias (which would be incredibly appropriate given their range in North America).Mario Kart said:Wow, you need to get a clue as well.Neofight said:Don't stop him now, he's rolling...zftcg said:1. It is nice to hear that your Indian friends are so open minded,I live in country that is today, very sensitive towards first nations people / natives.
I have many that are friends.
It took me until this whole hoopla to realize that "Redskins" was referring to natives.
This wasn't hard to figure out... But it just never crossed my mind. ever.
Funny thing is, not ONE of the many native people I know, has ANY issue with the name. As in, zero. The guy I was watching the game with told Costas to "#### off" while we were watching.
That's how little many of them seem to care.
This is miserable WHITE PEOPLE making a big issue of something that really isn't one.
