Bob Costas ... (1 Viewer)

Why not bring the issue of tens of thousands of homeless native Americans to light instead of ranting about the nickname of a sports team? i don't get it.

Always take polls with a grain of salt, but if most Native Americans don't find this offensive, what does it matter what white people think?

http://washington.cbslocal.com/2013/10/08/how-many-native-americans-think-redskins-is-a-slur/
There was a time when most African Americans didn't find "negro" to be offensive. Can you imagine an NFL team called The Negroes?

Sometimes, doing the right thing means going against the majority.
Doing the right thing? You people are hilarious.

Especially when he said most Native Americans polled were not offended. Whose cause is this, and for what gain?

Where is Costas during the world series ranting about Atlanta and Cleveland?

Where is Costas on Saturday's ranting about Illinois and Florida State?

Did Costas mention Kansas City or Seattle tonight?

Yeah, if Costas on tv means big money... spread the wealth and plaster his face with these other sports including the NHL.
1. In a time machine back to the year 1995?

2. Is he supposed to be offended on behalf of birds?
Wow, um, I don't believe I have to explain the above.

World Series <> Atlanta "Braves" and Cleveland "Indians"

Kansas City "Chiefs" and Seattle "Seahawks" (the picture of the Seahawk is taken from Indian totem poles. The logo is the key here.

Birds? Um, sure.

So telling the Native Americans what should and shouldn't offend them is what is best for them? Can you please explain this better because I am not following you.

It really has nothing to do with the percentage of people offended.

If a black person enjoys being called the N-word, that's their business. I won't criticize them for that.

But that doesn't justify using the word.

True, but just because a vocal minority decides to take a crusade on the name doesn't mean it should be changed either. What if the majority got all vocal about the possibility of it being changed?

You are comparing a word that has caused countless murders and acts of violence to a name of a football team that doesn't even offend the majority of native Americans that term refers too.

Those aren't mutually exclusive?

Washington's football team isn't a football topic?
Football discussion is what I want from him, not political topics.

Why would he rant against names that aren't slurs? The college examples given are asinine and Seattle is a gigantic reach. None of those three at least are anywhere within being possibly anywhere near the same ballpark as a slur.

Can't stand the little midget. Him and seacrest, the world would be a better place if neither of them were ever on tv again.

As far as the redskins name, I don't care and can't stand all the PC crap that people love to hang their hat on.

If the redskins name has to go, so does any other "native American" name. Chiefs, Indians, braves, etc.

And while we are at it, the raiders, the 49ers(I heard their decendants are insulted by the commercial use of their forefathers hard work) buccaneers, Vikings, etc

Again, I just don't care.

Why not bring the issue of tens of thousands of homeless native Americans to light instead of ranting about the nickname of a sports team? i don't get it.
Because it's not somehow tied to sports.

Id guess the super-majority of PC-type reporters had dreams of working politics for the Washington Post or New York Times. Instead, Peter King and Christine Brennen and Bob Costs ended up covering trivial bat and balls....and even though they've been very successful, it eats at them that they arent "changing the world"; like it would bother any other self-absorbed borderline sociopath.

So they latch on to whatever cause seems close enough to their sphere and they do their Woodward and Bernstein impersonation in their search for meaning in their otherwise meaningless careers. That's why they do what they do and it is very, very sad.

Totem poles everywhere are offended by the Seahawks logo. I am surprised Costas did not mention this.

Peyton and the Broncos go to Indy next Sunday. At halftime, NBC will have a Manning through the years retrospective. Then Bob Costas will champion PETA’s cause that the terms Broncos and Colts cause low self-esteem in horses.

Actually I think it's a good thing to have a sometime controversial "collumn" during the week's biggest game at halftime. Expressing opinions is what journalists and the press are supposed to do, and arguing about things is what make television/newspapers/theinternet fun. Costas is always well spoken, it's not too long, and way better than showing two "experts" discuss about " why team A needs to get some more pass rushing if they want to win against this great team B quarterback" stuff.

You guys all need to take a deep breath and calm down about Costas. He is not a bad guy.

I think comparing the name "redskins" to the "n-word" and other racial terms is way off base. 99.9% of the country would think of the football team when they heard the name redskins. It is just another "cause" that someone with too much time on their hands thought up and is using the power of the media to make noise.

I also think it is off base to compare the redskins to the changes to college and high school football teams. The Redskins name and logo are trademarks of a franchise worth 1.5 billion dollars. It's going to take a lot more than a few media members that just decided after 80 years that they are offended by the name.

First of all who in the hell watches the half time show on NBC? Did they lose their remote's or something, change the f'n channel.

Second, if the Redskins are forced to change their name then they should forever be called the Washington Libtards. Nice ring to it.

The team could turn this into a windfall if they wanted to. Just hold a contest for the new name and charge people 5 bucks per entry. Also the sales of the new name and logo could bring in mega bucks if they play it right.

Just change it. Take a page from the Cleveland manual... change the team name to the Washington Snyder's and everyone's happy.

They can put that janitor on their helmet from One Day at a Time (oof.. showing my age).

I dont think Snyder is in this particular fight for the money.

A better question is "Why didn't Costas say one bad word about "Redskins" for the past 40 years?"
Because times change and things that were acceptable become unacceptable and this has actually been talked about quite a bit by media for at least three years (openly and more adamant).

Over time, the black community changed the vocabulary of their culture themselves, without the help of whites. Other than the vocal minority, mostly activists, and the few who show up at FedEx Field to protest, this issue just doesn't seem to have much traction among most Native Americans. So, why the white cause? Perhaps this is simply white progressives patronizing another minority group with:

1) We will be offended for you.

2) We will let you know when you should be outraged.
Why "Native Americans" and not Indians?

What gives him the right to do that, NFL should step in and tell him to stop using SNF as a forum to express his views.
What takes away his right to do that? I'm guessing his producers had a clue what was up.
Because I tuned in to watch the football game, not the nightly news. Wrong forum

Good question.

Costas has been on the air since the early 1980's. Why not bring it up then?

Nothing changed other than our president deciding he didn't like the name and voicing the opinion it should be changed. The Native American community still largely supports and approves of the team's nickname.

so if somebody wants to buy something at a reservation, and doesn't refer to a native american indian as a redskin, it isn't because it is an inherent racial slur... it is because of white progressive patronizing?

would YOU refer to an attendant at a reservation with the words... "hey redskin!"... if you would, what is wrong with you? :) and if you wouldn't, ask yourself, why not? because you are employing misplaced offense and outrage for others? or because it is in fact a slur...

there could have been a team called the pasty faced crackers... the team could cite polls that 90% of people didn't care... would that make it the right thing to do to leave it?

Plenty of causes take time to reach some sort of critical mass. The fact that Snyder, who's considered controversial, arrogant and despised by many, doesn't help keep the issue at a low profile.

Regardless of how you feel, the issue is nearing that critical point.

Finally, somebody going to bat for our fine feathered community... because CLEARLY the NFL franchise name that should be under the most scrutiny is the Arizona Cardinals... either change the color of the beak to RED (Cardinals - as we all know - do not have yellow bills), or change the team name to the Arizona Pyrrhuloxias (which would be incredibly appropriate given their range in North America).

Whew, I've been holding that one in for a while. This thread is really cleansing.

I live in country that is today, very sensitive towards first nations people / natives.

I have many that are friends.

It took me until this whole hoopla to realize that "Redskins" was referring to natives.

This wasn't hard to figure out... But it just never crossed my mind. ever.

Funny thing is, not ONE of the many native people I know, has ANY issue with the name. As in, zero. The guy I was watching the game with told Costas to "#### off" while we were watching.

That's how little many of them seem to care.

This is miserable WHITE PEOPLE making a big issue of something that really isn't one.

It is nice to hear that your Indian friends are so open minded,

Why is this thread even here?

No one cares what Bob Costas has to say. Boggles my mind how much energy Americans waste discussing opinions. Bump Finley.
