You may not remember all the facts. In 2008, the Cards promised Boldin they would renegotiate his contract over the summer. They never did, and from then on, Boldin was at odds with management. It wasn't just because Boldin was playing well that he wanted a new contract. He felt slighted by management because he felt they broke a promise to him. It's almost funny sometimes how these things play out. Like you have to wonder if Flacco wishes he'd kept his mouth shut after encouraging Boldin not to take the cut. Perhaps not, I'd hope probably not since the consequence of that were obvious, but I have to wonder.Or then there was this bit from Boldin:Boldin's view of contracts in 2013 when asked to take a pay cut:
Boldin's view of contracts in 2009 when he was playing well:"At no point, no matter how well I played, would I come back to the table and say, 'I need more money.' The contract that I signed was the contract that I intended to play out," [boldin] told USA Today.Arizona Cardinals' wide receiver Anquan Boldin and his agent Drew Rosenhaus want to tear up his $22.75 million contract (now in its 2nd year and legally valid through 2010) and renegotiate.
i didn't know they were GMs tooJim: If you are going to cut him, give 'em to me.
John: OK.
There's a longstanding structure in the Baltimore front office that many people are not aware of.When the Ravens make brilliant moves and/or great draft picks, those are all done by Ozzie Newsome. But when it comes to bad decisions, then Ozzie is completely powerless to stop his head coaches from making these moves - like when Brian Billick drafted Kyle Boller, and now when John Harbaugh gave Boldin away to his brother, over Ozzie's helpless protests.i didn't know they were GMs tooJim: If you are going to cut him, give 'em to me.
John: OK.
I don't think they're done yet trying to get weapons for Kaep. They have a lot of draft picks and some cap money to play with. The 49ers still need a player that can make the safeties play deep, no?
Jenkins. The 49ers still need a player that can make the safeties play deep, no?
Yep, A.J. Jenkins plays so deep the safeties have to sit on the opposing side's bench.Jenkins.The 49ers still need a player that can make the safeties play deep, no?
Could not agree moreGreat move by the 49ers. If you consider that Boldin is probably gonna replace Randy Moss, even if Boldin only puts up the numbers he was in the regular season the last three years, that is still a massive upgrade. And Boldin did show that he is a guy who can still be relied on in the big moments. Not sure I'd overpay him, but I still like the acquisition.
Yeah, I'm looking forward to watching him battle Sherman and Browner. Wish he were younger so the battle would last longer. Niners - Seahawks should be good for a few years with bruising, physical games between players and especially coaches that hate each other. The kind of hate that makes coaches go for 2 or bomb it long when the game's already locked up. Plus it'll be between two SB contenders (possibly favorites). Closest thing to hockey on turf.A bit disappointing to see a Boldin thread with this many responses....yet nobody has mentioned Boldin's inability to gain separation vs DBs these past 2 seasons. He's one of my favorite players all-time...hands down....but he relies on veteran guile at this point to get separation at the last minute. Not speed. Not quickness. Possibly strength - which is code for subtly using his body (not his athleticism) to gain room to operate. Again, huge fan. He's probably a good veteran addition to SF. But $6M+ for him? Meh.
Dirty? At least they sent him to a winner. Dirty would be sending him to Cleveland or Jacksonville. He's gonna cost more than Boldin and has been injured the last 2 seasons. Hard to believe they did Anquan dirty like that, he was such a big part of their playoff run. Cutthroat businessGotta figure the Ravens have a free agent in mind to replace him. Take a run at Welker maybe? Jennings?
I think everyone is surprised by that. Or maybe not surprised when you consider it's two brothers making a trade like this for a 6th.A little surprised also that they couldn't get more for him. I'm sure the brothers were the ones on the phone with each other about this deal
Agreed with it being a good move by both teams. And I've been laughing, because if the NFL were a fantasy league, there would be several collusion threads going on. The 49ers still need a deep threat. I'm not so sure it's Jenkins, but Harbaugh has done fine so far.Terrific move by both teams. Baltimore has to cut the $6m off the payroll but they do right by Boldin and get him to a team he can still compete on for a championship. The Niners immediately upgrade their WRs, Vernon Davis will benefit a lot, also guys like LaMichael James who will have a serious WR blocking threat out there with Boldin and the Niners are going to be ripping some long long runs with that OL they already have in place.
Class organizations making class moves with a class player, big thumbs up. Now wait a minute...you say the 2 HCs are brothers? Hmmmm, wonder if anyone else would have gotten the same deal?
Ozzie Newsome is the GM of the Baltimore Ravens. He makes all the deals.Reports are that Minnesota offered a 7th and SF offered a 6th. Who are these mystery teams offering anything better than a 6th round pick for a 33-year-old WR in the last year of a deal that pays him $6M this year?Because if they are out there, and their stronger offer was passed over by Baltimore, then there would be grounds for a collusion argument. If nobody steps forward to say they were offering more and were rebuffed, we can put this argument to rest.I think everyone is surprised by that. I get that they're brothers, but who would really think a NFL team would take less for a player from the team they just beat in the Super Bowl?Ozzie Newsome is the GM of the Baltimore Ravens. Not to mention that a 5th from the Steelers, for example, could be less desirable than a 6th from the Niners.I get that they're brothers, but who would really think a NFL team would take less for a player from the team they just beat in the Super Bowl?Ozzie Newsome is the GM of the Baltimore Ravens. Honestly, the hate and rivalry is more on the Seahawks, and the media's, side. Until the Hawks started injuring Niners players in the last game, and then trash talking afterwards, the Hawks were pretty irrelevant from the Niners' perspective. I guess the media and the Hawks might have their rivalry and relevance now, but you have to view it with some cynicism when you think about the lengths they had to go to get it.Yeah, I'm looking forward to watching him battle Sherman and Browner. I thought this too. Maybe not in too much of a literal sense, but the Niners loved having both Davis and Walker on the field for their blocking abilities (plus overall flexibility) and Boldin is a tremendous blocker.Anquan Boldin is exactly what the 49ers need, veteran physicality at the WR position. Possibly more of a replacement for FA Delanie Walker. Before last season I was in the camp that thought Boldin was done and Smith was ready to take over, that clearly wasn't the case. After years of tormenting the niners it's finally good to have him on our side.

Boldin can be useful for 3-4 more years. His game has never been predicated on speed, it's predicated on strength and body control. He's 3 years younger than Randy Moss.I like the move from a football standpoint and I think Boldin will help us, but that's a lot to pay for a 1 year aging rental. The 9ers are in win-now mode which makes it easier to swallow..
Come on Anquan. I can buy that you weren't informed they were talking trades until you heard it had happened. But to be "stunned" that you'd be traded by a team that already indicated they wouldn't pay you what your contract currently calls for? It's what we call a likely outcome, not a stunning one.Anquan Boldin, who is traveling in Africa on a charity mission, told ESPN he was stunned to hear that the Baltimore Ravens traded him to the San Francisco 49ers."You know, for me, it was an initial shock because I had no clue that I was going to be traded,"
I'd say its 50/50 he's back for the 2014 season.Boldin can be useful for 3-4 more years. His game has never been predicated on speed, it's predicated on strength and body control. Completely agree that Crabtree will probably not be a good value at his ADP. I'm weary of Vernon Davis though, unless his ADP minimizes the risk of another season of him being underutilized and a bad FF value. This trade doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Sure, they needed to upgrade opposite Crabtree, but neither of these guys can really stretch the field. I've been a bit of a Crabtree proponent the last few years, but I'm positive his ADP is going to be too rich for my blood this year. Sure, he blew up with Kaep but that's because his targets exploded while Vernon's decreased. I think the Crabman sees less than 11 t/g while Davis sees an increase from 2, all the while Boldin will now command a few. All this on an offense that will almost definitely rank in the bottom half of pass attempts. From a fantasy perspective, this is not an exciting trade. But this does make me want to target Vernon Davis even more next year. I suspect he's going to be the forgotten man yet he's suddenly become the lone deep threat on that starting lineup.
In the last 10 years the Niners haven't had much to be excited about with the exception of the last 2, so I can see why the niner fan base isn't all that passionate. Was driving in San Jose for business recently and a few fans mentioned this was the case on local radio, saying primarily the niner fan base is comprised of bandwagon fans. I found it interesting, locals would all be calling in saying that.Honestly, the hate and rivalry is more on the Seahawks, and the media's, side. What reason have niner fans ever had to hate the Seahawks? Seattle is a nice city, they were in the AFC when the Niners were good, and the Niners were pathetic during the only relevant period in the Seahawks history over the last 30 years. In the last 10 years the Niners haven't had much to be excited about with the exception of the last 2, so I can see why the niner fan base isn't all that passionate. They've had horrid ownership for years, and the team just moved to San Jose. Basically, Hawk fans were subject to being the other side of the Bay's ##### for years. So go over to OAK and show them what ya got.In the last 10 years the Niners haven't had much to be excited about with the exception of the last 2, so I can see why the niner fan base isn't all that passionate.
