Bored Upgrade - discussion (1 Viewer)

Do anyone of you actually work in IT

In over 25 years of working in IT( Yea, I'm old get off my lawn!!! ) I have NEVER seen a change/upgrade go smoothly out of the gates, nor liked by all.

No matter how much testing, reviews, etc.. you do some things won't work as intended and no matter what you do you cannot please all of the people all of the time.

Little bit. I have also seen people make platform changes without checking with anyone who actually uses the platform daily too.

Stupid question.  I hit "quote" to reply to somebody, start typing, and then decide that I don't want to reply after all.  On the old board, I could just delete the quote using backspace, but now I can't get rid of it.  Even if I exit the page and come back, it's still there every time I try to reply.  How do I get rid of this?

Not stupid, but addressed already. Hover the outline of the quote box, click the "select all" symbol that shows up (looks like a +) and then hit delete.

See previous thread page.

I'm on a desktop, but if you hover on the quote, a symbol appears just above the quote.  Click on it, then backspace/delete.

This direct handle thing is great. Now all those jabs we all throw at @Eminence that went undetected by him can be sent right to his inbox notifications.
Until Rudnicki gives you a timeout for trolling him.

All that aside...have there been any word on the followings issues:

1. Changing it back to where there are 50 posts per page?
2. Changing it back to where there are more thread topics displayed on the first page?
3. Discussion about how old comments that have been quoted are now anonymous and you have no idea who said what?

There's no indication anyone's asking.

These were the immediate things I noticed.  And on the app it's even worse.

The "topics I replied" seems to have been downgraded as well to "content i posted in", especially since nothing carried over.  boooo

I almost feel like one of us should create a "changelog" thread and update the first post in it with all the tweaks/changes.

Can someone help me find the UFC thread? It doesn't show up in the custom sort like it used to. Searching "UFC" or "MMA" or "Silva" or Gracie" don't return any results.

TIA.

Search isn't working at all from what I can tell.

Good thing the upgrade kept all the old quotes clean looking.

Thats not entirely true - search works great for any content created since the upgrade...i.e search for "silva" now, and see what you get.
takes time to index all the old posts I believe.

search function is supposed to be improved significantly with this upgrade.

Mobile versions of sites are a thing of the past.  Responsive is the new standard and that's what they did here.  One code base and one UI to fit all screens no matter what device you are on.   Deal with it.
... if that device is post-2012 or so. This particular board software is pretty weak on a Blackberry. But I know, I know ... those were left behind years ago. "Get a new phone, luddite!" ... I know.

...

Also, is it my imagination, or does this board software not play well with Internet Explorer 11? Or maybe I'm just not used to where to click for things now. Clicking on some stuff, and nothing happens ... haven't kept good enough track to give examples yet.

I've been on other boards with responsive design UI. They don't include anywhere near as much dead space on mobile versions though.

Most of the bad stuff already mentioned so I'll mention the one thing I like. It now  tells you not just likes but when someone quoted you.

I already think the search function is better (whether it's finalized or not). Can actually locate threads now.

Even if you have to reset it each time, I really like the custom "Sort By" function so can find the threads we've posted in right away.

I'm sure some improvements can be made, but I like the upgrade

If you're a right handed mouser, I think it's natural to work the right hand of the screen more

Therefore, I'd like to see the 'Go To Topic Listing' and 'Next Unread Topic' arrows flipped.

Does anyone even use 'Next Unread Topic'?

Well for one, the icon in my favorites folder is finally fixed!
Favorites folder?

I guess there were a lot of changes to things I never used. I think the Internet was basically perfected in 2003 or so ... so, yeah, that's my perspective here.

As for search functions ... some message boards I belong to just punt searching and just let Google be their de facto search tool. I've gotten used to that, and prefer that to any board-based search function. But, we'll see.

It effects search engine optimization.  Google is less likely to send its users to a site that isn't mobile friendly and unless your website is coded a certain way Google won't flag it as such.

What is "responsive design"? What does it give us that we didn't have before?
It "gives us" the same viewing experience whether on a desktop with a large monitor or our smartphone. Unfortunately a lot of people don't want that because they don't want to waste screen space with things like large colorful avatars on their phones (and the time/battery to load them).

Really just makes things much better for the provider since they aren't customizing their look across multiple OS and screen sizes.

Pretty much, instead of having different skins for mobile - tablet - desktop...  there's one universal skin that adapts to the formatting of whatever device you are using.
(Why can't I bold text or use the backspace key in the reply window ... was doing it a few minutes ago????????)

That isn't good for user experience... Browsing should be different on a 4" screen and 15" screen - They're completely different experiences.
