Bottom Barrel QBs -- who are you looking to patch holes with? (1 Viewer)

Which of these WW QBs is a better long term hold?

Many of us in deeper leagues are scrambling now to replace/upgrade at the QB position due to injury/general suckiness of the guys you drafted. Who are you looking at over short term, who do you think has long term potential, and why?

You first
I think Ryan Mallett and Bortles or Winston are good short term pickups.

Alex Smith, despite the dearth of TDs from his receivers and Jamaal potentially fumbling away passes, is the better long term pick, but think that guys with more upside and potential to score on the ground like Manziel or Winston make me wonder if they might be better despite the risk.

As for others? Cousins, maybe?

I was just looking at my wire as I have Romo and Cutler in 1 league. Alex Smith & Ryan Mallett are best available. My gut is saying take a chance on Mallett so I'm going to roll with him as I try to work out a trade.

I voted other. Another week like last week and Derek Carr is at the top of everyone with QB injuries ww list

Carr has no business on a WW list.

I'm surprised Johnny Manziel doesn't get more love here. Josh McCown isn't going to hold him off very long.

Fitzpatrick assuming Decker is only out a week or 2. High floor, some upside. Would definitely take him over Mallet. I think Winston is the boom/bust option. Could put up some high volume games.

He's owned by 15% on yahoo....

Who does David Carr play for? I thought he was out of the NFL.
Been out of the league for a few years now.
Thanks guys, fixed, been a long night of a screaming kid. Not thinking straight.

No Tyrod Taylor?? Only 16% owned on Yahoo. He's been the star of my daily lineups. I think he's pretty good!

Interesting opinions and votes so far.

Gianluca, I agree that in short term, Mallett seems able to bring potentially more of a spark in the next game or so than boring old Alex Smith. But thinking over the long term, I tend to favor those boring options with their low but dependable floors.

Carr would be a solid pick, but assume that in slightly deeper leagues (12-14 teams) that Carr was a high upside last round draft pick a lot were eyeing after the Raiders' hopeful preseason.

Fitzpatrick is an interesting option, how do you see him performing compared to the likes of others mentioned, in the short or long term? That team has confidence, their D is going to shorten fields, and he seemed to have some solid zip on his passes.

@RN -- really liked what I saw out of Manziel, some good maturation and now a target or two to work with. I just don't think he will be consistent.

Good other pick, but like Carr, assumed he would be drafted late based on his preseason. I like him better than most on this list, in the same potential range as Bortles and Winston with more upside.

Doh I might have inflated Bortles vote count.. I voted Bortles based on the fact that we might see improvement based on winning a game (pure n simple) Overall its just a stab..

Now Im pretty sure ya want Winston long term (period) Not to sound confusing, but YES I personally would snag CARR if available.. (not something I would really be hemming and hawing about)

Temp QB, Id consider a few things like Health and matchups. Weeden may be stepping into a Playoff bound drivers seat.. (But w/o both a leading WR, and an RB1)

Players may rally! If ya like this idea (which it appears most do NOT) Id just sit down and enjoy some coffee while reading the different takes,, :coffee:

Id consider "higher ceiling" when deciding on a long term QB ie. I think Id rather swing n miss, left to take another chance.. Then hit, and get stuck holding a player that ya dislike, but cant move easily..

Gotta agree with those who don't think the options in this poll are complete. I would certainly take Carr over all of these (his ADP was around QB22-23, so despite Raiderfan's disbelief, he wasn't drafted everywhere).

In general I'm in agreement with the previous poster that I'll shoot for the higher ceiling off the WW, as I can always just drop a guy and reload if I miss ... so Taylor would probably be next for me, though it might depend on the scoring system - in a league with 4-pt pass TDs and 25 pass yds/pt his rushing ability makes him significantly more valuable than otherwise.

In the same vein of "looking for ceiling" Bortles jumps out. I don't think he'll ever be a fantasy QB1, but he's got no shortage of weapons in JAX and with a full year already under his belt, we ought to know in the next 3 weeks or so whether he'll be effective with them. Winston has even more weapons at his disposal ... though his problem is we won't know in the next 3 weeks what he's made of, so you may be wasting a roster spot most of the season trying to figure it out. Thus I'd probably lean Bortles in a short-bench league and Winston in a deeper one.

I want no part of most of the rest of the list. 10 times out of 10 I'll trade away a WR2 for someone else's bench QB and mine for WW gold at that position rather than trot out Luke McCown or Brandon Weedon in a game that meant anything to me whatsoever.

You can still trade for Taylor, Carr or Mariota and chances are they are on the bench, though MM carries a price in dyno. So going a little past this list and who might be on benches, the question of Carr, Mariota, Mallett, Taylor, Bortles and which of that group will emerge to be a viable top-10 QB is an important one.

Al Smith seems to have good games when the wind blows only and Manziel was starting to show some things but it looks like it's not his time yet.

Voted Bortles and Winston.

Bortles looks like more of a boom/bust guy and possibly better to plug holes. Winston the same but just no clue what to expect from either except more inconsistent play.

Bortles for both parts.

Although I do question his judgment. How could he break up with his college gf? That was like the hottest Instagram feed ever, she was smokin'.

I picked Winston. But I think Bortles is possible add too.

Based on a combo of both your questions I would rank-em this way (rank out of 5):

Winston (Ceiling-4, Floor-1)

Bortles (Ceiling-4, Floor-1)

Smith (Ceiling 3, Floor 2)

Weeden (Ceiling 3, Floor 0)
