NFL suspended Patriots ILB Brandon Spikes four games for violating the league's policy on banned substances.

He's done for the regular season, but should return for the playoffs. According to Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald, Spikes was not suspended for ingesting a performance enhancer. A high-impact run defender in his first season, Spikes has 61 tackles and an interception in 12 starts. His absence against the Bears Sunday is a boost for Matt Forte's matchup.

So if this suspension came down next week, would he have missed the 1st playoff game or would the last game of the 4 game suspension carry over to the opener next year?

It wasn't PEDs. Banned substance, but Rappoport (who came out with report) specifically said not a PED. So I guess that means some kind of recreational drug?

If it was weed, they would have come out and said it already. Outside of that what other ways do you see "recreational drugs" taken without being ingested...

In English, "ingesting" is the verb, "performance enhancer" is the object. Only a few recreational drugs can even remotely be considered performance enchancing. The debate is about what the substance was, not the method that substance entered his body.

If, according to his own statement, it wasn't a performance enhancer or a recreational drug, I'd be inclined to believe it was some sort of masking agent, but your guess is as good as mine.

 
I've read that it is the typical athletes lament that it was a banned system inadvertantly taken with a medication. Maybe bad batch of Sudafed.

 
"The substance was a medication that I should have gotten clarification on before taking," Spikes said in a statement. "It was not a performance enhancer or an illegal drug. The integrity of the game is very important to me. I understand the league's ruling and apologize to my teammates, the fans and the Patriots organization for this mistake."

See this is stuff that bothers me. It wasnt a ped, it wasnt drugs, it was medicine.
 
I'm willing to bet there's a 95% chance that this "medication" was something obviously used to counter the side effects of PED's. Which is probably why that medication was banned in the first place. Sort of like the estrogen medicine Manny Ramirez was taking.

Usually that's what happens in these instances. They don't get caught taking the PED's themselves (players are very smart anymore about how much and when to take enhancements), but every now and then they'll get tripped up by taking medication whose only obvious benefit is to count the effects of certain PED's. Like I said, I'm willing to bet that's the case here. It's not like the NFL is going to suspend him for taking a bad batch of Tylenol.

By we I assume he is referring to his dog. As long as it was only to "speed up the healing process" and not gain a competitive advantage.

A source tells Tom Curran of CSN New England that amphetamines in an ADHD medication caused Brandon Spikes to test positive for performance enhancers.

Yep. We all know that amphetamines aren't used for anything else but for some kids like little Brandon to make sure he gets his homework done.

Did the post say anything about steroids being illegal or that the Steelers were the only team on them? Well of course the answer is no. But the reason for taking them is the same now as it was then and Bradshaw admitted to as much; to give a player a leg up against their opponent. If one is healthier, bigger or faster on any given Sunday they have an advantage over a player who doesn't juice. Lyle Alzado isn't any less dead because of his steroid use because it was legal. Players took and continue to take risks with their bodies to win. I am not justifying what these guys do I would personally prefer they all play with their natural athletic ability. But this sport is filled with over blown egos from the owners in the luxury boxes to the fan sitting in front of the TV and for us to run around pointing fingers at every discretion is ludicrous. By the way I am neither a priest, a military chaplain nor a baseball player :goodposting:

I believe this was an accusation made by none other than Complainian Tomlinson. Such a sad story really, an elite NFL runningback, Complainian was deprived of his chance to ever play in the superbowl during his glory years with the chargers as his team was repeatedly bounced from the playoffs by the evil empire. So, in an effort to get to the big dance, Complainian signed on with the New York Jets, along with other uber studs Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes, Bart Scott, etc, etc. But his efforts were thwarted again as the evil empire pounded his all star team 45-3, motivating teammate Braylon to opine "those mean and nasty patriots run the score up on us!!!111!1!!!!!". Perhaps someday Complainian will get his ticket to the big dance.But not while Dark Lord Belichick is around.Peace out Complainian.

Says Spikes. This seems like a typical ambiguous statement that athletes make when they get caught. No one ever admits "yeah you got me". The NFL won't disclose or identify what the specific substance was, and so Spikes can say whatever he wants without confirmation from the league. I would find these types of statements more believable if they mentioned the actual substance that triggered the positive test. This would also benefit other NFL players who would then know not to take that medication. And if this was in fact the ADHD medication Adderall, then Spikes should have known not to take it since Garrett Hartley got suspended for that drug last season. Lots of people abuse Adderall as well. That stuff is basically legalized speed and it would be difficult to argue that it is not a potential performance enhancer.

Good thing "the cheater" has now cleared his ADHD medication with the league so he won't get "caught" again going forward:

Watson also said Spikes has cleared his medicine with the NFL.

“There will be no issues with that going forward,” he said. “We always should try to learn, and Brandon is no different. The key to learning is to never make the mistake again. That’s Brandon’s clear intention. He was an important piece of the team and for him to have that mark by his name by his own doing and to miss football is something this young man wants no part of.”

Yeah LT2 made this statement after Week 1 of the 2007 season. The Patriots had just destroyed the NYJ in the opener with their newly-minted Randy Moss when Mike Tannenbaum and Eric Mangini blew the lid on Spygate and the entire world brought Bill Belichick to the center of town and lynched him. Week 2 had the San Diego Chargers rolling into Foxboro amidst the incredibly shell-shocking week. LT2 laughed at his press conference about BB and made the statement: "I believe that's a motto they live by up there, if you ain't cheatin', you ain't trying." Everybody laughed. Hahaha @ the Patriots. Hahaha they are only good because of cheating. Pants down and the "genius" of Coach Belichick is exposed like a perv in a raincoat. That week Belichick came out to a sold out Foxboro and received a rousing and almost spine-chilling extended ovation from the New England fans. Every pundit, expert, messageboard witch-hunter and Patriots-hater was at the pinnacle of their glory, calling for a complete spanking at the hands of the Chargers. New England came out and whipped San Diego's ### 38-14 on a nationally televised Sunday Night Game. They would go on in a rage to scorch the entire NFL for months en route to a nearly perfect season. The Giants handed the Patriots their only loss in the most important game of the year or it would have ended as 19-0 and the greatest single season in pro sports history. Ladanian Tomlinson you are and always will be a loser.
