Braylon Edwards (1 Viewer)

Harbaugh will look for a balanced offense...limiting the upside of all the receving threats not named Vernon Davis.

Guy had 900 yards and 7 TD on a run first team with a bottom tier QB. I'd expect better numbers in a passing focused offense with a better QB.

1,000 yards and 9 TD.

Braylon Edwards could be quite a catch for 49ers

The 49ers botched their attempt to relive the Catch at the FanFest practice at Candlestick a week ago today. But in Saturday's exhibition game, Braylon Edwards took the park back in time, not all the way to the glorious early '80s, but to the days when one of their wide receivers genuinely scared opponents.

He went down the left sideline, covered rather tightly by Raiders rookie cornerback Walter McFadden, reached one hand out for the ball and grabbed a 32-yard pass as if he had Randy Moss' DNA and Terrell Owens' upper-body mass.

"Alex (Smith) made a nice throw; the line had nice protection," Edwards said. "And when we get that going, there's no limit to what we can do."

More than any other part of that equation, Edwards has the talent to pull off such plays regularly. He has power, agility and, despite some evidence to the contrary, good hands.

What he has lacked for most of his six seasons in the NFL is a proper attention span. That's why when Edwards finally became a free agent this year, he had to take a relatively low-paying gig in a place where one of his dad's old acquaintances would be his boss.

Outwardly, his signing appeared to be insurance after Michael Crabtree's foot knocked him out of training camp. But if Edwards can focus on football and deliver fully on his potential, he will not only be the clear No. 1 receiver for the 49ers; he will be the best wideout to wear their uniform since Owens left in 2003. (No offense intended to Isaac Bruce, whose dazzling moments preceded his time in San Francisco.)

According to research by Chronicle colleague Eric Branch, the 49ers are one of two teams in the NFL who have not produced a receiver with a 1,000-yard season since '03. The Bears are the other.

Crabtree has not come close. He may never reach that level. He certainly has not earned the trust of a quarterback, at least not enough to inspire throws into solid coverage, like the one Alex Smith launched in Edwards' direction Saturday.

The deep pass constituted a rarity for Smith. All of the yardage came in the air, and Smith tends to get his longer gains on runs after the catch. Last year, according to the esoteric information provided by Stats LLC through the Associated Press, Smith attempted 34 passes that traveled 21 or more yards in the air. He completed just nine of them. (He had 21 other passes that gained more than 20 yards.)

Edwards and Smith were separated by just one pick in the 2005 draft, Smith coming to the 49ers at No. 1 and Edwards going to Cleveland at No. 3. They have practiced together for just two weeks, and Smith said they are still cultivating chemistry.

"There are some things that he and I probably feel more comfortable with than others," Smith said. "We (were) still kind of installing this (offense) last week, so there are some things that are more foreign to us and some things that aren't."

Both have failed to meet the expectations for a top 5 pick, so it would be odd to see them join forces and lift each other up. Of the two, Edwards has had the better career so far, with 1,289 receiving yards in 2007 and a trip to the AFC Championship with the Jets last year. In 2008, he veered in the wrong direction, dropping a league-leading 16 passes for the floundering Browns. He also dropped a certain touchdown pass for the Jets in the 2009 playoffs. But overall, he has just 26 drops in his NFL career, and as Saturday's catch demonstrated, his hands can do sublime work.

Yet Edwards has managed to lose favor with two organizations, including the roughneck Jets, who preferred to sign the recently paroled Plaxico Burress. After pleading guilty to a DUI this summer and then being implicated in a Michigan bar fight, Edwards faces a possible suspension at the start of the season. The decision remains in the hands of the commissioner.

That status, as much as anything, sent Edwards to San Francisco for a mere $1 million (which incentives can more than triple) and the potential mentorship of Jim Harbaugh, who played at Michigan shortly after Stan Edwards, the receiver's father.

When he arrived at 49ers camp, a poised Edwards explained that he had absorbed the necessary lessons. He wouldn't be the first athlete to claim reformation and promptly go astray again, but the others weren't answering to coaches who knew them in childhood. That sort of relationship can be a powerful motivator. Who isn't on their best behavior around someone who's known their parents for years ?

If Edwards makes this work, he will be mimicking another Michigan player who spent time in the Bay Area. When Charles Woodson left the Raiders as a free agent, he discovered few teams clamoring for his services. He had developed a reputation as an underachiever. He reluctantly signed with Green Bay, then transformed himself into a film-room scholar, the 2009 Defensive Player of the Year and one of the NFL's revered leaders.

The sequel could happen right here. Edwards has all the material. He just needs to put it together properly.

Traded m floyd for Edwards mostly since I have vjax but also because Braylon has a higher ceiling despite a worse offense. Teams will have to accout for Davis and gore. Braylon could gave a good season. I expect numbers similar to last year with hopes it could be better

I've been trying to trade Edwards since our draft a couple weeks ago, but no takers. But I'm starting to warm up to him as a nice WR3, with WR2 upside...I think I'll be keeping him!

I fell for the "I've know the coach most of my life" thing. A suspension shouldn't even matter much for a bye week filler with upside pick.

Braylon Edwards signed a low ball offer. He wants to prove he is worth more than what the Jets signed S Holmes for this year.... he feels slighted. And this is a good chance for him to prove he is worth a good $$ contract. He knows the coach (who knows his parents)... and the influence there is strong. He worked on his "drops" and looks to be focused on making it work.

The SF offense is not geared to a Pass Happy WR1 flow, but Vernon Davis & Frank Gore will keep a Def Coord honest and the opportunity for a solid season is there for him.

Just took him in my Keeper League.... equiv of 10.04 (44th WR off board - right after Johnny Knox & Malcom Floyd and before Meachem & Jacoby Ford)

Do we dare make Projections?

I think the FBG projection of 50 rec & 650 yards with 5 TDs is a bit too low.

With Crabtree limping around and not even on the field, Edwards will exceed 70 rec & 850 yrds and 7 TDs

Braylon Edwards could still be suspended by NFL

According to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area.com, the NFL is still reviewing the Braylon Edwards case and a decision has not yet been made if Edwards will be suspended for violation of the league's personal conduct policy.

Edwards pled guilty in July to Driving While Intoxicated stemming from an arrest almost a year ago. At the time of the arrest Edwards was on probation in Ohio for pleading no contest to misdemeanor aggravated disorderly conduct. Edwards has been attending an alcohol counseling program since November 2010.

Edwards signed a one-year, $2.1 million deal with the 49ers this offseason. The 49ers start their season against the Seattle Seahawks on September 11 but don't yet know if Edwards will be available for the game. A team spokesman told Maiocco that they were aware Edwards could be suspended a game or two at the time they agreed to the contract.
