There are two kinds of people in the world: those who think the officials botched an obvious PI call, and Cowboys fans.

wait, what about Cowboys haters who are waiting for something like, this so they can pounce. Then we have polls, conspiracy theories, etc.......Gives eagles fans something to do I guess.

I'm going to make this real simple fellas. Had the game been played without the call everyone would be talking about how this game saved the weekend for it's pure excitement. Yes, there would be a few tiffs about some of the calls here and there but for the most part, Romo, TW and the Dallas defense would be dominating the conversations. It's a shame that it has come to this because for me any playoff team that scores but 3 points in the second half of a playoff game has no business winning anyhow.

That said, the call did happen and if you watch the play from all angles there were fouls on both players. Petigrew DID grab Hitch's facemask and Hitch although did a great job selling his coverage, grabbed his shoulder on the route and did enough to warrant a flag. However, if you're honest with yourself and have any kind of football purest in your blood, that play had no business deciding a football game of that magnitude. There is no way Detroit should have needed to pin there hope of winning that game on a referee throwing a flag. Petigrew was covered, had no chance of catching the ball because Hitch did a great job of being in the position that he was. Think back to when football was about making real plays despite rough play. Back when you couldn't depend on PI and PFs to bail you out. When players had to play football and WR actually had to get open, catch the ball knowing they could get knocked out, a time where the defender had as much right to the ball as the WR.

I know exactly what the refs were thinking. The three officials got together and asked each other what they saw. They all looked at each other and said, wasn't enough contact to give them a free pass. The guy who threw the flag was the furthest from the play and threw the flag based on the given precedent that when a defender has his back to the play and doesn't turn his head, it's a penalty. The three said NO, in a game like this, you're going to have to win it making plays. I applaud them for the decision. Had it been against my Cowboys, YES, I would be pissed off. However, I would also know deep down that they made the right decision and weren't about to give a free first down on a poor throw to a covered receiver who had no chance of making the play whether Hitch grazed him or not. That simple. Now the way they handled it was poor which is why we are here #####ing about it. I have felt exactly the way Lions fans do about calls like this, but deep down I am more pissed about the play call and the decision to make such a poor pass to a covered receiver, praying for a call.

I have no problem arguing it was the RIGHT call given the circumstances and Detroit had ample time and opportunity to win that game. Like I said, 3 points in two quarters does not a winner make.

Now as far as some fix being in. Ridiculous. If the Lions showed some balls and went for it on 4th and 1 like we did TWICE, perhaps they would have won. Instead they counted on a ticky tack call to go their way. I don't know about you but football is a contact sport and you had better know how to make plays in spite of contact. That is the foundation of this game and without it you don't have football. Some refs know the difference between PI and playing through contact. I wish more did because the pusification of this game has got to stop.

The conversation should be about how Romo played his ### off in spite of being legally mauled. TW stepping up to make plays. Murray grinding out some tough yards. Beasley making timely first downs. Witten coming up HUGE on 4th down twice and the Cowboys defense holding the Lions to 3 points in crunch time.

Finally, I applaud the refs for making the right call, despite doing it all wrong. In no way did that call determine the winner of that game. Did it make it tougher for the Lions, sure but that is what this game is all about. Dallas found ways to adapt, improvise and overcome, while the Lions.......they chose to punt.

Dallas didn't let misfortune stop them from making the plays to win the game. Simple as that folks. Simple as that.

Please, somebody call the 1972 Dolphins and have them return their Lombardi trophy. They scored zero points in the 2nd half of SB VII. I guess their undefeated season goes down the drain, too. Tough luck, guys, I didn't know about that rule, either.

Pettigrew grabbed his facemask, then the defender didn't look back. Seems like two fouls, letting them play type ref-ing. I don't see the prob.

The one camera view didn't show Pettigrew grabbing the facemask so I get why people are upset, but now that the other angle is "out there" ya gotta see that it was two penalties.

This was going to happen regardless. Whether or not it shoulda been a penalty, they handled it poorly.

The defensive holding most certainly should have been a penalty even if you think the PI was weak.

I'm not a Cowboy or Lion fan, but IMO you can't single out a couple plays out of an entire game and say either one caused the win or loss.There were 14 penalties in that game. Did the NFL look at every single one and say whether it was a 'good' or 'bad' call? There were 125 offensive plays, 10 kick-offs and 8 punts. Did they look at every single one of those and determine whether there were missed penalties that could have been called? You're #####ing about 2 plays that got singled out for scrutiny out of 143. If they looked at every single play I'm sure there were others that Detroit got away with too.

That said, we can all agree the Lions should have went for it on the next play. Only a coward punts it in that situation, especially after the screw job from the refs.

This seems to be a majority view and I thinks it's simply wrong. It's easy to say they should have gone for it knowing now that the punter would shank it for only 10 yds. Det was playing great D up to that point. You'd have to think they like their chances with their D and pinning them back.

Its more reckless to punt it in that situation than to go for it, even if its a good punt. It's not just some stats nerd theory or message board bro science, its been proven time and time again in the regular season and playoffs. Yet most NFL coaches think it is far less risky to punt in that spot, even though it actually lowers their chances of winning.

False. When you have Detroit's defense and the lead, statistically it is better to punt in that situation (assuming it doesn't get shanked 98% of the time)

Can you please cite the evidence that shows it is "statistically" advantageous to punt on 4th and short in your opponent's territory? Because every stat I've ever seen says that going for it is a no-brainer.

not sure in the history of sports a player has ever played a perfect game, a coach coached a perfect game, or officials have officiated a perfect game.....even a pitcher who throws a "perfect game" probably made some bad pitches, etc.....

so yeah....the arguement on one side can always be....."it's not what cost them the game".....

only in rare situations like Jim Joyce blowing the call at first on the last out of the game costing Armando Galarraga a perfect game....can you say that an officials call determined the outcome......

in most other situations there will always be people that say "they could have done something different earlier" or "they had other chances to win after that"....etc

but I will stick to my position that most NFL players and coaches will tell you that there are usually 2-3 crucial plays in every closely contested contest.....that usually decide the outcome......there is no way to deny here that that flag being picked up was a crucial play at a crucial time....

in sports like basketball with shot clocks, etc.....you are going to get the ball back quickly....it's back and forth/change of possession.....in football, however, things are magnified because of what converting for a first down means to the game and the clock and field position, etc....

if you are a true football fan and have a team you are a die hard fan for.....you know exactly what the NFL coaches/players mean when you are watching a game.....there are certain plays (only a few, but there are certain ones) where you find yourself actually saying out loud "this is a huge play in this game".....it may be early (a team just really needs to not go 3 and out again), it may be late, but there are those plays.....

this was one of them......and the way it was handled (and Dez coming on the field to argue) made it even worse.....personally I think DET wins if the call stands, but thats just from the gut and watching a ton of football......but nobody will ever really know and thats why the one side of the arguement will always have the upper hand in these discussions.....

I'm not a Cowboy or Lion fan, but IMO you can't single out a couple plays out of an entire game and say either one caused the win or loss.There were 14 penalties in that game. Did the NFL look at every single one and say whether it was a 'good' or 'bad' call? There were 125 offensive plays, 10 kick-offs and 8 punts. Did they look at every single one of those and determine whether there were missed penalties that could have been called? You're #####ing about 2 plays that got singled out for scrutiny out of 143. If they looked at every single play I'm sure there were others that Detroit got away with too.

yes they do actually look at EVERY play to see if it was officiated properly.......

Aww didn't mean to hurt your little feelings. Theres no hate, just find it comical they way Dallas fans are trying to justify the BS calls that changed the game. You got a gift (I would take it anyday), just admit it. Our season was over when our QB went down, I'm OK with that but cant defend butt fumble in any way he sucks. To all you people saying one call doesn't decide a game -- if that was true then we would still have replacement refs.

To all you people saying it doesn't matter, it will all be made better in GB -- that's like taking the attitude of who cares about the thief, he/she will burn in hell anyways.

This is why we wanted play reviews in football, we want right calls at all times. We let some go because we understand it's not perfect but this one was different. As someone above already said, it wasn't a missed call, it was called and picked up. That's a huge difference and that's why it's still a topic of conversation. Don't let your ego tell you it's because it's all the hate for the cowboys. A terrible call is terrible -- terrible for the reputation of the game. It's really hard to defend calls when the NFL admits to getting it wrong (we all know how much they love to admit to being wrong these days).

To all the people saying the game's over, move on -- we should always strive to not repeat mistakes. There should be a legitimate conversation about whether some penalties that aren't reviewable should now be reviewable.

No excuses. I'll admit the Cowboys benefitted from some calls/non-calls, but so did the Lions.....I honestly don't want to see the NFL issuing statements and apologies about missed calls. I think its opening a can of worms that don't need to be opened. These kinds of things should be handled at yearly employee reviews, just like with any employee of a business.....If refs keep missing calls, get rid of em....Good ones get compensated.

I'll also admit I'm biased in my assessment.......My responses are typically to offset the biased haters piling on.....Since we're being honest, most want to see the Cowboys lose, and when there's controversy involving them, it goes beyond objective analysis......And yes it annoys me.....Shoulda been my new years resolution to not let it bug me! I don't pay attention to things like that. But yea, I'm sure the Officials have a QA kinda deal for going over their performance. That makes sense. The point I was trying to make, is how far will this go? Maybe if theres more than 6 missed calls on one team, the game is replayed? The win goes into another column with an asterisk? There are bad calls, missed calls, and reversed calls all the time. There were plenty in this game. This call is unprecedented... PERIOD... and will likely result in some type of procedure/rules change during the offseason.
