Breaking News - Terrell Owens Rushed to local hospital (1 Viewer)

If you were jacked up on meds, could you tell the difference between:

"Mr. Owens, did you take the pills to hurt yourself?"

and...

"Mr. Owens, did you take the bills because you hurt yourself?"

Geez, what a circus. The only thing missing from that interview was Shannon Sharpe putting his arm around him and saying "Leave the man alone. This is the best player in football."

I know we're supposed to swallow everything we just heard in that news conference, but take a moment to consider just how many holes there are in Owens' and his publicist's story. And take a moment to consider that IF he did try to kill himself last night, he is not likely now to get proper treatment for it. I honestly am concerned for the man -- his handlers may be sweeping something under the table rather than reaching out to get the man the help he needs.

I hope I'm wrong...

I'm sure the doc can help us out here, but how do you have a "reaction" to pain killers? It's just opioids that may make you nauseous / upset your stomach / make you puke...But what kind of "reaction" could you have that would cause all this drama?
You can have an allergic reaction. You can have a negative reaction to a different dose (even one that's been changed by the doc). You can have a negative reaction to a drug taken with certain foods. You can have a negative reaction to a drug taken with alchohol. You can have a negative reaction to a drug taken with certain other drugs. You can have a negative reaction to a drug taken when suffering from certain undetected or previously non-existent medical conditions.
OK...I believe him.Call it spin if you like, but it sounds reasonable enough to me. As a ff/emt, I go on medical calls all the time. We have to inventory patient's Rx's. On even a normal call this is often a challenge. The scenes are often crowded and noisy, and some people, such as TO, often have unusual systems for storage or managing their medications, making them difficult to locate. He's saying he had an negative reaction to drug he was taking in combination with nutritional supplements. He's saying he was suffering an altered mentation which caused him to give an abnormal response. This is not at all uncommon. He's saying he can't remember what he said. It's not at all uncommon for patients we treat to not remember what they said 2 minutes ago, much less last night during their illness and treatment.I've dealt with many patients who've attempted suicide. This man does not present in any way like them. Everything TO's saying is perfectly consistent with what he's claiming.

For any of you guys that couldn't see it, here's the high points and what I sent our guys.

Hi Folks,Terrell Owens just finished speaking at the Cowboy's facility. In a nutshell, he's good to go.He was asked if he thought he could play Sunday. Owens answered, "Yeah, I just gotfinished working out." He had been on the field running routes with quarterbackDrew Bledsoe. He said very clearly, "There was no suicide attempt."He also said, "The report of me taking 35 pills is absurd."As far as his treatment at the hospital, he said "rumors of me having my stomachpumped are untrue."[[[[[[[[[[[[[[ OUR VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]Speculation about this will rage for a while I'm sure. That's really not of interest to me. What we're looking at is that he appears tobe fine and he's practicing on the field. If you have an Owens owner in your league that is panicked, I'd make a move forhim right now. There are surely risks involved as there has been for him since dayone of the season, but he looks like he's ok and hopes to play Sunday. If not Sunday, you know he'll be ready for Philadelphia.J***********************Joe BryantOwner - Footballguys.com
Great news. Hopefully it is indeed true. This is kind of what I figured, but you never know until much later, so I just sat back and waited for the truth (or as much of it as possible) to come to light.

Michael Irvin on ESPN says that he agrees that TO just had a reaction and that a lot of older players take supplements and empty them into a container so all pills are in one container so he understands how that situation could happen.
It seems Irvin has been polishing up on his excuses for drug consumption. Where were these viable excuses when Irvin was playing?

I just don't buy TO and his publicist's story.
His publicist is full of crap...Yeah the Police lied..Yah right..She made a fool out of herself...The police report is public information, would like to see the press get ahold of that..

I hope Cowboys do the smart thing here and have the guy checked before letting him back on the field. There's certainly enough here to warrant having the man looked at by a professional.

I've treated many patients in similar conditions who wouldn't even be able to understand what I was saying, and if they did, weren't able to speak, or at least speak clearly enough to respond.

John Clayton: "He's getting ready for a football game which is surprising considering how much trouble he caused last night......"

is ESPN really going to try to blame TO for this???? seriously????

bostonfred, i'm sorry i ever doubted you.

Surprised he didn'tt get the treating doctor to come on and discussthe allergic reaction confirm that he did not have his stomach pumped. Doctors go on camera to discuss players' conditions for the press all of the time.

Here's my guess at what happened:He was incoherent for whatever reason, and Etheredge panicked. From how weak she was during the press conference, I could easily see her being frightened and throwing out a variety of possible explanations while the paramedics were there.

ESPN is pissed about all the egg on there face. Someone has to take blame.EDIT: I hope T.O. has a great game at Tennessee.

Now John Clayton just claimed that Owens' injuries and now this have kept the selfish Owens from surfacing.

Extremely smart move having this at Valley Ranch. Would have been a joke at his condo with too many visions of situps in the driveway.

I think Owens / Rosenhaus handled this well.

Any word on what the Cowboy fans reaction to the press conference is?

Will there be a breakdown of the press conference and, if so, will there be a Cowboy fan poll associated with it?

She definitly lied. No way in hell the police would EVER lie.
Not saying the Police never lie, but why would they lie about what she said. What would they get out of that?? Her story is obviously full of holes..

It still sounds like somebody called the police in for a possible suicide. However, I find it hard to fathom such a call would be made if a woman who claimed to have seen everything kept rambling on about how he was having an allergic reaction.

Heck no.I'm not exactly a drug user, but I have been drunk enough to see how something like that could happen. One time when asked repeatedly by an officer for my birthdate I answered "one-fourteen", repeatedly. (So, I am told, and very vaguely remember.)

Can any head-shrinker types clear up whether it's normal for someone that attempted suicide and failed to deny the attempt? I've know some people that tried suicide and none of them tried to hide it at all, but that's obviously a very small sample pool.

He was unresponsive. She couln't have known that is what it was. I'm in the camp that she panicked and babbled. .. probably doesn't even know what she said. Not impressed with her p.r. capabilities.

I don't suppose they mentioned WHAT he took in combination with what supplements, so that someone could say whether that type of reaction is possible. Nah, that would make too much sense. Not saying they're lying for sure, but I certainly am not going to completely dismiss the thought. Sounds like they're giving just enough information to refute one version of the story without giving enough information to present a refutable alternative.

Normally, people don't attempt suicide because their lives are too public. It makes sense in this case for Owens to hide it.

Suicide? No way

By Dan Le Batard

Special to ESPN.com

I believe Terrell Owens. No matter how noisy this all gets. No matter how loud the voices of publicists and agents and friends and coaches and psychiatric experts and police officers rise in unison into a tower of babble. No matter how many people come to this conversation with their own baggage and their own version of the truth, which isn't the truth at all. And no matter how contradictory and complicated even the voice of T.O. can be much of the time. I believe Terrell Owens.

I've seen too many things a lot less complicated than this get confused and clouded and misdiagnosed when it comes to the very famous Terrell Owens and the spinning swirl that perpetually surrounds him. So on the subject of whether he really tried to kill himself -- Owens adamantly denies it -- I'm siding with the only guy who was inside his own head at the time, and I'm doing so even if that head was clouded at the time by too much pain medication.

Maybe that makes me very naive. Or maybe it makes me fair. Maybe it makes me a stupid player apologist. Or maybe it makes me non-judgmental about the way I cover sports. Either way, we're all a little clouded when it comes to T.O. and his behavior, so I guess it just took too many pills to make him more like the rest of us.

My first reaction to news of a suicide attempt? I didn't believe it. I'm not talking about disbelief or shock. I literally didn't believe it. I believed it was the pills talking. I believe there was some sort of adverse reaction to the medication that made Owens loopy. I've seen people very close to me become something else, something unrecognizable, when chemcially altered by the wrong medicine. Owens is many things -- complicated, defiant, stubborn, moody -- but he is not a liar. If he tried to kill himself, I believe he'd tell you. He doesn't do spin control. Doesn't even know how, I don't believe. He'd avoid an awful lot of his messes if he did.

For all his muscled and psychological armor, he is oddly open about his shortcomings and scars. He admits to being sensitive and wanting to be liked. He admits he has so much trouble showing affection that he just recently got comfortable with telling his mother he loves her. And he cries when talking about his grandmother, whom he appreciates even though he was shackled to his front yard as a child and only escaped when she passed out from the drinking.

He doesn't much care how things look, or dressing up and camouflaging his weaknesses. It isn't right that Steve Mariucci once flew to Atlanta to talk to him and extended a hand as an olive branch, and Owens merely stared at that hand as if it were covered in leprosy. But Owens tells that story, not proudly, about how stubborn and proud he can be even though he knows those who don't like him will take it as reaffirmation that he is a one-dimensional-stick-figure-cartoon-character and that that one-dimensional-stick-figure-cartoon-character is a complete and total jerk and nothing else.

You saw how convoluted and messy and loud things got when it was just his hamstring. So now we're going to try to climb inside a vastly more hard to understand muscle like his brain? We've seen in a very public way how alcohol can alter a Mel Gibson, so it is possible that Owens had no idea where he was or what he was saying when he allegedly told a paramedic he was trying to harm himself. But everything that happens after that is just more proof of how polarizing he can be, of how he makes us take sides. You can believe him and leave it at that. Or you can call him a liar because it reaffirms your belief of who you already think him to be.

We do this all the time in sports. We grab the stuff that supports our likes and dislikes. If you like Brett Favre and think him a monument, you ignore his selfishness and his former pain-killer addiction and his refusal to tutor Aaron Rodgers and his lack of support for holdout Javon Walker. If you dislike Randy Moss, you hold up as symbolic his crass mooning of the Green Bay crowd as an indictment of everything he is even though it is no more a complete picture than another little thing he does in the end zone when he gives a touchdown football to the kid in a wheelchair.

Facts? There are very few of those. So we'll waddle into the unknown and pick and choose whatever supports our own baggage. It was a sports figure who taught us just how two groups of people could see the same set of facts differently. His name was O.J. Simpson.

Like him or hate him, Owens has always given you his truth. It may be a narcissistic, one-sided, persecuted version of the truth, but it is honestly the way he sees things, like it or not. One of his biggest public relations problems is that he is relentlessly honest and sometimes seems completely unfamiliar with the concept of tact. Graceful on the field, clumsy off it. In this case, it sounds like T.O.'s version of the truth was clouded by a mixture of medications. But who in the world is more qualified to tell you whether or not he was thinking about killing himself than him?

T.O. and I are in our second year doing a weekly radio show together, but I'm not going to pretend to know him. You can't put someone's life together even with the entire scrapbook in your hands, so I'm not going to try when armed with just a couple of snapshots. I'm not an authority on the guy. I don't know him socially. But I will tell you this: The last two weeks, he sounded happier than I've ever heard him.

Last year, I felt like I was interviewing him by prying a crowbar into the side of his mouth. He was clearly unhappy in a way that was overt in Philadelphia, and he didn't hide it, and that made our interviews like head-butting sometimes. He laughed very infrequently. An example: After his first touchdown catch following an offseason of turmoil, I told him I was very disappointed that he didn't give us one of his patented celebrations. I was joking, being sarcastic. His response was defensive, persecuted -- as it often is. He thought I really was disappointed in him and went off on one of his rants -- not entirely unjustified -- about how the media sees only the bad in everything he does.

Last Friday, though, he couldn't have been more affable. Playing. Joking. Making fun of himself. Talking for a full five minutes about how he is looking forward to buying a terribly unmasculine four-pound dog because he doesn't have much use for the more rabid pets of Steelers linebacker Joey Porter that recently killed a miniature horse. He was funny, light, free. It is only a snapshot, a grain of sand at the beach, but he certainly didn't sound much like someone thinking of killing himself.

You are welcome to either snapshot.

The one of him laughing on the radio.

Or the one of him being rushed to the hospital.

But neither one of them really tells you who or where he is.

YUPThat's exaclty what I was thinking.Put him in his work environment with support of his team.

What probably happened here, IMO: the woman wigged out, over-reacted, and probably said a few things to the police last night that she shouldn't have said. That's what led to all of this tomfoolery.

Isn't rule #1 when speaking in public to take the ####### gum out of your mouth? Kim must haved missed that in Public Relations 101.

Those "mega-vitamins" with huge amounts of Vitamin C and other anti-oxidents can effect your reaction with other medications. They effect the oxygen levels in the bloodstream which in turn effects how your body absorbs chemicals.

This is almost as irresponsible as...well...most of this thread. ;) Not to be overly blunt, but how many "reasons not to be depressed" did someone like Kurt Cobain have. Depression doesn't know the size of your bank account.
