Breaking News - Terrell Owens Rushed to local hospital (1 Viewer)

Guys... the police report may be entirely accurate. The vast bulk of it is simply relaying what the PR girl told them. It would be like if the cops broke up a domestic dispute and you only looked at one sides statement. That doesnt mean the cops are drawing those conclusions. The only thing the cops observed was asking TO in the hospital if he was trying to harm himself. No-one is disputing TO was disoriented, so it is plausible he misunderstood the question or was confused. The cops did not SEE Owens take any pills. They didnt see him having a medical emergency- the police report indicated it was the PR girls request that he be moved to the ER. If he unresponsive they wouldnt have asked. This has nothing to do with who to believe. The two stories are not mutually exclusive.
This is pretty much the way I see it. This "who do you believe, the cops or TO" angle doesn't work. The cops showed up, saw a guy who was loopy on pills and a woman who was panicking. They asked him some standard questions, and got one-word answers that they recorded in the report. They rushed him to hospital for treatment.

Notice that there's nothing in the above paragraph that contradicts either TO or the police report.

What do you guys think? Am I wrong in my thoughts about this? Are we entitled to his medical records?
I haven't heard anybody say they were entitled to his medical records, and I don't think anyone is entitled to them. What was leaked out and probably shouldn't have been was the police report, though I don't know the privacy laws on police reports. Without that police report going public, the story probably would have died down by now.

I continue to believe that, with his history of wild mood swings, and after his fiancee broke up with him and he couldn't see his 7-year old son on his birthday, all within 24 hours, combined with the medication and supplements, he had a momentary swing to a very low level and took an action to try to harm himself, taking a few extra pain medication pills (not 35), though without intention to take his life. The next day, he realizes it got blown way up, and he has to play it off as nothing to keep his career and life on track, and he's no longer in that temporary very low level he was at the day before. Again, this is pure speculation but makes sense to me -- I don't think it was coincidence that those events occured within the previous 24 hours, but I don't think he was really trying to commit suicide.

The police report was probably accurate, and T.O.'s probably telling the truth that he's not depressed (though he was temporarily the day before), his stomach wasn't pumped, and he didn't try to take his life.

Unless he has another day with such traumatic events, I don't think T.O. is a threat to himself and should be allowed to continue on with his career. The media should respect his privacy, leave this alone, and let him move on.

I think a major investigation is necessary (possibly Congress's involvement if necessary). Pull the 911 tapes, get the doctor records, interview the cops/med staff/EMT's/PR person all on the record to make sure we get to the bottom of this. This is critically important info that I think many people are taking waaaay to lightly....

This is far from over. For a brief moment I bought the TO spin. Now, not so much.
Why?
Because he spent more effort denying rumors than saying exactly what happened.Because the story about taking a bunch of supplements (along with the painkillers) seems completely phony as a cause of this. Because he has a history of bending stories to make himself look good, or less bad. Those would be 3 reasons I can think of.

I don't think anyone will care about this in a month (unless he has more substance-abuse or suicide/depression problems causing more news stories).

At the end of the day it doesnt really matter who you believe. The scientific evidence is that TO doesnt appear to be a man who took 35 vicodin. The hospital didnt treat him that way either.
Exactly.Have any of you ever seen what cops do at a medical scene?

They're usually standing aside waiting for someone (citizen) to do something that gives them a reason to get physical. They're not typically in an active investigational mode, unless someone's dead or they think a crime has been committed.

This may have been asked but what happened to HIPPA? Why doesn't TO have the same legal rights and expectation to privacy regarding his medical records/condition as others?

The reason I ask is that this is the law. In order to have his records made avaible or to even speak on it he has to sign a HIPPA waiver to allow them to do so. And I can assure you he didn't sign anything that allows unautorized persons to see or speak about his medical records/condition ouside of those responsible for is medical attention. And the press isn't one of them.

Now before you reply that he's a public figure, high profile athlete and we have a right to everything, I respectfully disagree. You see high profile college athletes protected by their privacy rights regardless of the media's insistence on wanting more than they are entitled to. The line has been crossed on this IMHO.

At this point it's not about TO anymore. It's about speculation and stretching some opinions into contorted conclusions. After reading numerous articles and listening to all the talking heads of the sports world, it sounds like they feel they are entitled to the truth and/or facts of what happened. Entitled? Are you kidding me? No one is entitled to anyone's medical records especially when he's admitted to the hospital or potentially being treated for a physicalogical condition if that's what it is. This is one the last right's of privacy we truely have and it seems that many have taken liberties on speculating and suggesting as fact what they think is going on rather than allowing him his right to privacy.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no TO apologist but this borders on unreasonble journalistic integrity. Why do they suggest they are entitled to know the truth?

I guess I just don't get it or understand how they became in charge of what they say and do when one's privacy is at issue. It seems they have no respect for anyone when it comes to making a story.

What do you guys think? Am I wrong in my thoughts about this? Are we entitled to his medical records?
Did you hear Bob Ley yesterday? He kept on and on about how he wanted to talk to the responding Officers and Fire Paramedics to get their perspective. His tone was more demanding than wishing. No way in hell that's gonna happen. No way it should, either. I'll bet his tone would change dramatically if it was him or someone he knew.

This is key. We are in the business of getting in the door, finding out basically what's wrong, stabilizing the patient, and getting them to the hospital asap if need be. We are not in the business of finding out everything that happened to the patient that day or what their motivations are. If they are trying to hurt themselves, or if there's been an attempted suicide, we will attempt to ascertain that info, but it's a quick, concise interview process with a patient who's often unreliable due to their condition, and possible witnesses who may or may not know what they are talking about and who also may or may not be reliable.

If there's something that happened in the last day or 2 that suddenly made him more believable, I guess I'm just not seeing it. Exactly what "supplements" that he was taking would react with pain medicine to make someone so messed up that emergency help has to be called?

Exactly how many pain pills did he take?

Exactly what were his reasons for taking them?

None of that information was provided by Owens in any believeable way, none of it is or will be provided by police or the hospital due to privacy concerns, and nothing believable about him ever comes out of his press agent or his lawyer. It's not a situation where there has to be "one correct version of events" that is already out there, and all we have to do is pick the correct one. The lack of other, good information doesn't make him believable to me.

My guess, and it's only a guess, is that he was down about his son and/or his fiance, down about his hand which hurt, took a bunch of pain pills to get away from it for awhile (the pain and being down), and got a good bit more messed up than he thought he would. But that's a guess. Nobody's going to clear this up. Future events may make guessing easier.

I had a parody of Thriller called Pain Killer but decided not to post it. I'm not sure those things are allowed here any more. :(

:goodposting: I think this is very, very likely the case. Anybody else out there straddled that line between medicinal and recreational when they had a prescription? I know, its a rare and despicable thing. I will raise my hand and sadly admit that when i got my wisdom teeth pulled, i finished my bottle of painkillers (not in one sitting!) even though i didnt need them all. Did it occur to any of the conspiracy theorists that not admitting to that could be the rationale for TO not going into detail about exactly how many pills ended up where and when? And the whole suppliments fiasco as well? Again, what is more likely: Owens doesnt feel like admitting that he popped a few extra pills (could violate the leagues substance policy even though they are his script?) OR that he downed the whole bottle but since he is a cyborg there were no signs of it 12 hours later?

Update on T.O.

Matt reports from Valley Ranch that there are eight TV cameras and two still photographers on hand ... and the fact that T.O. caught every pass (while showing no discomfort) during the time reporters can watch practice.

More to come.

At this point, I don't think TO really would try to kill himself, heck..he's got 25 million reasons not to! It looks like he had a bad day, tried to medicate himself to forget about it, took too much medicine, then this cluster **** happened. It appears that after several hours of "how can we make this go away?", TO, his publicist, the Cowboy organization, uber agent Drew, et al came up with a drug interaction. As a pharmacist (not the idiot with the previous comment), I find it odd that TO didn't enlighten us about the supplements causing this reaction. It would be nice to warn other athletes not to make the same mistake. My guess, is that he took a few too many to kill the pain, escape from reality, whatever, and his publicist had to make the call. Being from the Philadelphia area, this is looking like typical TO. He has got to be in the limelight, one way or another....It just looks like he took it to another level this time. Dallas, get used to this, it will only go downhill from here. Did he try to kill himself?...I don't think so. Is he an extremely unbalanced person who needs to have his ego stroked and who is a trainwreck waiting to happen, absolutely!

OK, thanks, I understand now. That was someone else's comment. I never did lapse into believing Owens yesterday, was just trying to list a few reasons I don't tend to believe him. I could've been more clear.

I don't know what he was thinking but I know it's his business to take care of. And while he has 25 million reasons not to it only takes 1 reason to do it. I will say this, he sure didn't look like someone who had taken 25 Vics. I doubt he would be able to do what he was doing yesterday and look that good. From my perspective, I can understand the alergic reaction theory. I recently went to the hospital for a reaction (they thought I was having a heart attack) due to new meds I was put on. I was incoherent for a few hours and seemed as though I couldn't comprehend much for a while. As soon as it cleared (a few hours) I was like new again. So that stands to reason moreso than an overdose does.

Doesn't anyone else find it interesting that his missing pain pills were just "in a drawer" somewhere? His publicist is around him enough to probably know that he sometimes puts his pills loose in a drawer sometimes, wouldn't she?

Would someone who is taking so many different kinds of pills that it would take too long to list them...some 6 per day, some 2 per day, etc....would that person just take some of the pills out of the bottle and dump them into a drawer? TO is a professional pill popper, although apparently they are usually supplements of varying kinds. Nobody who takes alot of meds would just take some of the pills and dump them into a drawer. And if they were prone to that type of habit, wouldn't his close friend/confidant/publicist be aware of that and not panic and call 9-1-1, which she knows would create a huge uproar?

Doesn't anyone find it curious that TO glossed over all his actions after taking the pills by saying he doesn't remember, yet about the third thing he said in his presser was "the reports that my stomach was pumped are wrong". How would he be so clear about that and not clear about anything else? If others told him he didn't have his stomach pumped, they must have also given him some details of the rest of his actions, but he didn't seem to be aware of any of that.

Making that statement so strongly so early about his stomach not being pumped leads me to believe that it was a "talking point" which was generated by his advisers as they met to figure out how to make this whole thing go away. If he could convince people that his stomach wasn't pumped but he looked coherent at the press conference, the sheep would conclude that he must not have taken those pills. Wasn't there a report right up front that vomiting was being induced? If he puked up most of the pills pretty quickly after taking them, he would be fine the next day. Thus the cover story about no stomach pumping.

The story today from his trainer/father figure about him being cut from the squad by his fiancee and missing his kid's birthday only lend credence to the info the authorities were receiving about him being depressed. A depressed person with a history of mental illness/instability is a prime candidate to do something stupid like this.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Mine is that he tried to kill himself and is now once again spouting mountains of lies to spin the media. I predict he will reveal this on a teary Barbara Walters show sometime in the future. Did he TRULY want to kill himself? Doubtful. He had people right there with him and there was little chance that he would die. This was a cry for help from a mentally ill person. However, with the "20 million reasons to live" that his leeches/posse all want to share in, the help that he needs will not be given because it would be bad publicity. This dude is a future trainwreck waiting to happen. And considering what a turd he seems to be, I don't feel sorry for him at all. You reap what you sow.

Doesn't anyone else find it interesting that his missing pain pills were just "in a drawer" somewhere?
No.
His publicist is around him enough to probably know that he sometimes puts his pills loose in a drawer sometimes, wouldn't she?
I dont have any idea how much she is in his bedroom. Why do you think you do?

Would someone who is taking so many different kinds of pills that it would take too long to list them...some 6 per day, some 2 per day, etc....would that person just take some of the pills out of the bottle and dump them into a drawer?
Maybe, people do weird things all the time. My GF mixes her migraine medication in her advil bottle, which i've nearly discovered the hard way more than once. Its not your medicine cabinet, how do you know whats going on? Or care.
Doesn't anyone find it curious that TO glossed over all his actions after taking the pills by saying he doesn't remember, yet about the third thing he said in his presser was "the reports that my stomach was pumped are wrong".
No.

How would he be so clear about that and not clear about anything else?
Because having your stomach pumped is a very memorable experience. For one thing his throat would be sore as hell if he had it done. For another the hospital would tell him at some point, one would think.

Making that statement so strongly so early about his stomach not being pumped leads me to believe that it was a "talking point" which was generated by his advisers as they met to figure out how to make this whole thing go away
Yes, but your judgement is clearlry not sound on this issue.
Thus the cover story about no stomach pumping.
All it would take is one phone call from a nurse, fellow patient, or anyone in the ER reporting TO with a tube down his throat and that lie gets blown up.
A depressed person with a history of mental illness/instability is a prime candidate to do something stupid like this.
But every grownup on the planet who doesnt happen to have this ridiculous media microscope over their head have what anybody else would call that - a bad day. Its not like a meteor wiped out his home town. Whats next? His cat was sick so obviously he was depressed and hence suicidal? Didnt get to see his kid? Only happens to millions of people everyday that dont jump off bridges- and few of them are famous millionaires.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
You sure proved that much.
Mine is that he tried to kill himself and is now once again spouting mountains of lies to spin the media.
So it is your belief that he downed 35 vicadin and walked out of the hospital hours later, played football and gave an interview less than a day later? Great! Thanks for sharing.

Mbue, are you REALLY Drew Rosenhaus, or just a TO appologist? I guess you believe the TO crap that all that has happened to him over the last few years is someone else's fault. Whether or not he attempted to harm himself, he MUST be in the spotlight, or he isn't happy. BTW, I am not a TO hater, and I think he is/was the best receiver in football as a complete player. BUT, he is a complete nacissistic nutcase!

Exactly... people are acting like the initial "possible suicide attempt" conclusion was the result of some sort of formal police investigation. It was a reasonable assumption by the first responders that wound up being wrong. Where's the big mystery?

911 tape: 'A guy took some pills'

02:16 PM CDT on Thursday, September 28, 2006

By REBECCA LOPEZ / WFAA-TV

A publicist for Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens sounded excited and nervous during a 911 emergency call she placed from Owens' Dallas residence Tuesday night, WFAA-TV (Channel 8) reported Thursday afternoon.

According to a source who has heard the recording, Kim Etheredge told dispatchers she needed an ambulance right away. When a dispatcher asked about the problem, she reportedly said, "a guy took some pills," but did not identify Owens by name.

The incident was characterized in a police report obtained by WFAA-TV as a suicide attempt, and a source said it was dispatched as a "signal 34," which alerts officers to an attempted suicide.

Owens spent the night at Baylor University Medical Center and was released Wednesday morning.

At a news conference Wednesday afternoon, Owens flatly denied that he attempted to take his own life.

The source told WFAA-TV that on the 911 recording, about one minute long, Etheredge called for an ambulance and asked dispatchers what to do. She did not mention the word "suicide" during the call, the source said.

Dallas Fire-Rescue initially declined to release the tape of the 911 call, deferring to police, who requested that it not be made public Wednesday. Dallas police commanders, however, approved the tape's release late Wednesday, but it was unclear when the fire department would send out copies.

Owens, who broke his hand in a Sept. 17 game with the Redskins, was practicing with the Cowboys on Thursday morning. It is not yet clear whether he will play in Sunday's game at Tennessee.

"I've listened to all this stuff, and the situation now is that I have to now — as a coach — rely on other people to keep me informed as to really what's going on," head coach Bill Parcells told reporters Thursday afternoon. "I can't form my own independent opinions other than those involving, 'Is his hand functional and does he look like he can play on Sunday?'"

Parcells said he had a "brief conversation" with Owens Thursday morning. He said he did not feel the team has been distracted by the events of the past 24 hours.

Parcells said he didn't learn about the incident that sent Owens to the hospital until after he got to work on Wednesday morning.

"I was sleeping when all this happened," he said. "Maybe they didn't want to wake me up."

Dallas Morning News staff writer Todd Archer contributed to this story

I actually believe TO has lost some of his craving to be in the spotlight.

The problem now though, is the media feels they have to put him in the spotlight everytime he farts. If you listen to the questions that they ask him and Parcells, they are very leading questions. They're trying to make a story out of anything. QB controversies, coach controversies, etc. TO has done a great job so far of fending off those questions.

TO hurt his hand, took some pills, had a bad reaction, and the story blew up. No way he tried to kill himself if he was back out on the field yesterday and today. That doesn't happen when you take 35 pain pills.

That certainly helps her story... or at least, it doesn't torpedo it like it could have.

Its amazing. This guy has ESPN by the balls.

Below is the side column / quick links to all things TO.

OWENS: ATTEMPTED SUICIDE?

An internal police report in Dallas said Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens attempted suicide by overdosing on prescription pain medication Tuesday. Owens and his publicist deny he attempted suicide and say he was rushed to the hospital as a result of an adverse reaction to medication. Story

It does if vomiting was induced, as it reportedly was. If the pills don't get into your system, and by all accounts he received very fast treatment from someone who was in the same room with him and reportedly tried to pry pills out of his mouth and then called 911 immediately, then you will feel no ill effects the next day.Despite the moronic rantings of people like mbuener (who might as well have been in TO's adviser meeting yesterday morning), the idea that someone who has taken tremendous amounts of many different types of pills for years would just dump some out of the labeled bottle into a drawer is farfetched at best.

Anybody who has watched a news show in the last 10 years would know that their 911 call would be probably released to the public eventually, especially someone who is a professional publicist. There is no doubt she was choosing her words carefully, evidenced by the fact that she didn't give his name.

We'll never know EXACTLY what happened, at least until TO goes on Barbara Walters and cries. Circumstantial evidence in this situation makes it look like a depressed person impulsively did something very stupid and needs to get help. He won't get help from this particular posse he has assembled, however. I will look forward to watching the train speed on down the tracks.

Is it moronic to ask for a link for this? Considering i've never heard it before? Reported by whom?

I defy anyone that watched this gum chewing nitwit giving a press conference to agree she seemed professional in any sense of the term, much less capable of choosing her words carefully. Talk about spinning! Now its the Brialliance of Ethridges PR skills you are hiding behind? Please.

Probably because they went to help a selfish ##### who just wanted some attention and now they are basically being called liars because he's too embarrassed to admit that he made a complete fool of himself.

I defy anyone that watched this gum chewing nitwit giving a press conference to agree she seemed professional in any sense of the term, much less capable of choosing her words carefully. Talk about spinning! Now its the Brialliance of Ethridges PR skills you are hiding behind? Please.
Hey, a woman of her statue obviously chooses her words carefully.

Stomach pumping isn't done much anymore...there's some type of charcoal crap that you drink that neutralizes whatever is in your stomach....

It does if vomiting was induced, as it reportedly was
Is it moronic to ask for a link for this? Considering i've never heard it before? Reported by whom?
Anybody who has watched a news show in the last 10 years would know that their 911 call would be probably released to the public eventually, especially someone who is a professional publicist. There is no doubt she was choosing her words carefully, evidenced by the fact that she didn't give his name.

The Dallas Police Association is demanding an apology for Etheridge's comments disputing the police report. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?sectio...&id=2606150

"These officers, contrary to what Mr. T.O. Owens and his

publicist Miss Etheredge alluded to or insinuated or whatever,

those officers out there did the job they were supposed to do and

did a good job of it," said Senior Cpl. Glenn White, who leads the

largest police employee group in the Dallas department with more

than 3,500 active and retired members. "We police officers don't

go out to these calls and make stuff up."

Owens' publicist who made the 911 call, Kim Etheredge, said

Wednesday that entries in the police report were inaccurate. She

said she did not say he was depressed and "did not take anything

out of his mouth," as the report said.

Report: T.O. taken to emergency room, reason unknown

Associated Press

National Football League News Wire

DALLAS -- Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens was

hospitalized Tuesday night after suffering an allergic reaction to

pain medication likely being taken for his broken right hand,

according to newspaper and broadcast reports.

"This is not serious," Owens' publicist Kim Etheridge said in

Wednesday's online edition of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Repeated calls from The Associated Press to Owens' agent, his

publicist and the Cowboys were not returned. A hospital spokeswoman

told the AP early Wednesday that there was not a patient registered

by the name Terrell Owens; however, federal privacy laws allow

people to block their name from being released.

No teammates or Cowboys officials were seen entering the

hospital late Tuesday night.

Owens' status for Sunday's game against Tennessee was not

immediately known. He was expected to practice Wednesday for the

first time since breaking the bone leading to his right ring finger

a week ago Sunday night. The next day, a plate was screwed in,

protecting the bone so it can heal without further damage.

Cowboys coach Bill Parcells previously has said that Owens' pain

medication had made him ill.

Dallas-Fort Worth television station KTVT, citing sources it did

not identify, reported that Owens was taken to Baylor University

Medical Center by a fire rescue crew, and that doctors were trying

to induce vomiting. A reporter for the station later said she saw

Owens being wheeled down the hall.

He said the bottle was empty because the rest were in the drawer...Not that he dumped them in his drawer. Did you ever see one of these?Someone who has taken tremendous amounts of many different types of pills for years would use one.

thanks for that link1. so their asking for an apology from Etheridge, not TO

2. i thought TO should have thanked the police for having his well being at the top of their list, regardless of their conclusion

3. calling a report inaccurate is NOT the same as calling the originator of the report a liar, i'm not sure why that is so hard to realize. mistakes and misunderstandings happen.

Ah, unnamed sources. Always reliable. Doctors inducing vomiting for a vicodin OD? Nope. You dont induce vomiting for hydrocodone poisoning. Im pretty sure an emergency room physician would be aware of this. And im really sure a doctor wouldnt be the one inducing vomiting in any case.

So you think the police are asking for an apology because she called their first report inaccurate? Seriously?

no, reallynon-idiotic answers encouraged
Wasn't idiotic at all, it was spot on...

i have no idea why they're calling for an apology, that's why i asked the question. but an answer that's based on the fact that TO put his life in jeopardy in order to get the police to his house and draw attention to himself isn't really going to be taken seriously

They didn't show up to "help" TO. They showed up because the state of Texas(along with most ,if not all, others) thinks they have a right to charge those who attempt suicide with a crime (basically the state claiming ownership of all who reside under their domain). Other than investigate a possible "crime", they didn't do a damn thing. EMT's were there to help. Cops weren't.

If you re-read the part that you bolded, I said they were "basically" being called liars. And that would be because he doesn't want to admit to what he did. She is speaking on his behalf, pretty much from whatever angle he tells her to take.

So is it your opinion that the police are asking for an apology for no particular reason here? Is that your stance?

You are right. TO would never go to extreme measures to draw attention to himself. :lmao:
