Broncos trade JJ Arrington to Philly for LB Joe Mays (1 Viewer)

Joe Mays (5-11, 246) is a 3rd Year linebacker from North Dakota State. The Eagles drafted Mays in the 6th Round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Mays was mainly a Special Teams player, starting just one game in his 2 seasons in Philadelphia. He finished 4th on the Eagles last season with 19 ST tackles. Mays will also provide the Broncos depth at linebacker as the team goes through Training Camp. Darrell Reid is still recovering from off-season knee surgery, so Mays might just take his place, temporarily.

Interestingly enough, the Eagles targeted Arrington instead of a running back they know a bit better - Correll Buckhalter. Obviously contract status likely had alot to do with that, and the Broncos must already feel good about their stable of running backs as well as their return game since Arrington provided depth in both areas.

Adam Caplan wrote on twitter that Mays would not make the Eagles so it was a good trade from their standpoint. In addition, if Arrington does not make the Eagles, Philly gets a conditional pick. So, at worst, Philly traded a player unlikely to make their team for a future pick. Also, Caplan added that McCoy is not as strong in pass protection as Arrington. Greg Cosell (from NFL) said that McCoy was "shaky" in pass protection.

Honestly, I'm not sure Arrington was gonna make the team either. I think this might be a case of trading someone who can't play ST (outside of KR/PR, where Denver has plenty of depth) for someone who can.

Here are specific Twitter posts on the topic:

@caplannfl No. Bell is the #2. Only proven guy. RT @NewBreedX: @caplannfl Is there anyway they are unimpressed w/ Bell? and might take the #2 as well?

@caplannfl Bingo. That's why it was a no-brainer. RT @jwil565: @caplannfl Not sure Mays will be anything more than a special teams player in his career

@caplannfl Roseman is very smart, gets really good value back in most deals. Mays would not have made the team.

@caplannfl Correction or conditional 2012 pick. That means if Arrington gets cut, they get a pick instead

@caplannfl Source points out something interesting. Arrington better blocker in passing situations than McCoy.

@Fantasy_Guru Eagles get RB J.J. Arrington. Can't b good for McCoy's value Greg Cosell said just 2day McCoy shaky in pass pro.

Caplan is plugged in to the Eagles so he speaks with authority.

Totally agree. The one thing I do see is two teams trading junk and Philly might get a late pick out of the deal.
