Browns let 4 coaches go (1 Viewer)

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Wide receivers coach Terry Robiskie and tight ends coach Ben Coates won't be back with the Cleveland Browns next season, the first departures in an overhaul of coach Romeo Crennel's staff.

The team announced Friday that those two as well as offensive quality control coach Carl Crennel II and strength and conditioning coach John Lott will not be retained for next season.

"These decisions were made with the best interest of the franchise in mind," Romeo Crennel said in a statement.

More coaching changes could occur as Crennel continues meeting with general manager Phil Savage and owner Randy Lerner following a 4-12 season that began with high expectations.

The Browns need to improve one of the league's worst offenses and have asked the Miami Dolphins to interview quarterbacks coach Jason Garrett for offensive coordinator, a person familiar with the request said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment.

Garrett played 12 seasons in the NFL, mostly as a backup quarterback for Dallas, Tampa Bay, Miami and the New York Giants. He has spent two seasons coaching Miami's quarterbacks.

The Browns are looking for an offensive coordinator after finishing 30th in scoring and 31st in yards and rushing even after coordinator Maurice Carthon was replaced by offensive line-assistant head coach Jeff Davidson in October.

The 52-year-old Robiskie had been with the team for six tumultuous seasons. He was originally brought in by Butch Davis in 2001 and served as offensive coordinator in 2004, a season he ended as interim head coach, leading the Browns to a 1-4 record after Davis resigned.

The Browns' wide receivers turned in a disappointing year under Robiskie with Braylon Edwards dropping passes and creating distractions, including a tantrum on the sideline.

Robiskie, whose son Brian is a wide receiver at Ohio State, has been an NFL assistant coach since 1982, starting out as a special teams coach for the Los Angeles Raiders, where he played for three seasons.

Coates is a former All-Pro tight end for the New England Patriots. He joined the Browns when Crennel took over in 2005 along with Lott and Carl Crennel II, the coach's nephew.

Lott was not retained after the Browns put 15 players on injured reserve. He was the first coach Crennel hired, luring him away from the New York Jets.

Crennel, 10-22 in two seasons, is expected to be back for a third year.

They gave Davidson 8 weeks as OC, pathetic. I bet once the playoffs are over Mangini is trying to figure out how he can use him+bring him to the Jets. With Dante, I don't think NE has a need for him but I'd still be happy if they signed him to coach anyway.

Cleveland..... YOU NEED SOME PROVEN PLAYERS AS WELL AS SOME PROVEN COACHES IN THERE. Tired of being the retirement home for all the washed up players. Get some coaches in there that players want to play for, not someone that they'll question from day 1. Need a foundation for players to buy into rather than the "its a given we'll suck" attitude. Some of the most hardcore and proud fans in the league. Lets get some pride back in Cleveland!

What is it that they supposedly see in Jason Garrett? 2 years as Miami QB coach doesn't seem like much of a qualification for a promotion.

Cleveland, the only NFL city NEVER to host or play in a Super Bowl.

The worst franchise in the NFL right now imho...
not quite sure why HOSTING a super bowl is relevent to a team being good or badhow did the lions organization prosper from hosting a super bowl?

cleveland won 4 titles before the inception of "the super bowl"

cleveland also made the title game in 6 out of 7 years in a row

Just a factoid there s_ezy....Of all the teams to go to in the NFL, the Browns offer the least hope for winning the Super Bowl if you ask me.

The Lions at least have some solid playmakers on each side of the ball in Roy Williams, Bly, Sims and Shaun Rogers.

I'll offer up Edwards, Winslow, Wimbley, D'Qwell Jackson, Leigh Bodden and Sean Jones as solid playmakers.

I'll offer up Mike Martz and an innovative offense that nearly knocked off four playoff teams this year: Seattle in Week One, the New England a month or so ago, the Bears in Week 16 and succeeded in knocking off Dallas. I'll also offer up this in response to Edwards and Winslow:Cleveland's Pass Offense is amateur compared to Detroit's and I'll also throw in the fact that Jon Kitna threw for more yards in his first year under Martz than any QB in the history of the Cleveland Browns.

Browns >>>>>LionsAs long as they keep a certain GM.
As a Northwest Ohio resident who is forced to watch this crap year in and year out...   The Browns fell apart down the stretch... I mean, as much as the Browns could fall apart. Detroit was still competing until the end. Had Detroit's defense been effective they could have won a few more games.

Just move 90 miles to the east and you can watch the best team.

Amen brother...   (Barring your not an Eagles fan haha)

The Lions have been in the playoffs 2 times in their last 10 seasons, as have the Browns. But Cleveland won one of those games, where as Detroit hasn't won a playoff game in 16 years.

It's not relevant to a team being good or bad but it could make the organization better. The amount of money that comes in for a Supe is just crazy. New weight room or practice facility or maybe the owner won't mind spending big $ on a coach or...all that money will likely bring some good for the organization.

strength and conditioning coach John Lott will not be retained for next season.
I hope he keeps the combine gig.
I wish he would too but I'd imagine he'd have to be hired by then so we'll see. He's such a character he's fun to watch and IMO good for the potential pros. I think Lott is one of the best. I imagine the teams waiting to hire a staff are debating "do we hire him or wait for the new coach's opinion"? IIRC Parcells and BB both are fond of him.
