Browns center LeCharles Bentley has asked for his release from the Browns and it has been granted, his agent, Jonathan Feinsod, said this afternoon.

Bentley passed his physical Tuesday and practiced with the team that morning on a limited basis.

"But LeCharles doesn't want to be an insurance policy,'' said Feinsod. "He's going to play somewhere in 2008.''

Browns center LeCharles Bentley has asked for his release from the Browns and it's been granted, his agent Jonathan Feinsod said this afternoon.

"LeCharles came back to Cleveland to be in integral part of the Cleveland Browns, his hometown team,'' said Feinsod. "Through no fault of the Browns at all, they didn't know if LeCharles was going to come back or not and they moved on with their plans.

"But this is not the same team LeCharles signed with. They have commitments to other players. LeCharles is not ready to be an insurance policy at this point.''

Feinsod stressed that Bentley "did great on his physical and I know the Browns were very impressed. It wasn't anything about his health. He just feels he was not going to play the kind of role here he plans to play in 2008.''

Bentley left the building shortly after noon with a suitcase and was picked up by his mother. He had no comment at that time

"LeCharles' mindset is great,'' said Feinsod. "He had a near-death experience because of a staph infection and now he's completely healthy and ready to resume his All-Pro and Hall of Fame career.''

Feinsod said he has not started talking to other teams yet about Bentley, "but there's no doubt in my mind that he's going to play in 2008 and play at a high level.''

Bentley did say before he left the facility that he'd probably go back to Phoenix, where he has spent the bulk of the past two years rehabbing his surgically repaired left knee.

Why the Browns wouldn't have just done this last year is beyond me.
Wouldn't they have had to pay an injury settlement? I may be off, but if he is injured and they keep him, the money is paid by an insurance company. Since he practiced, it proves he can play and he can be released without the Browns having to pay him a settlement.

 I'm sure more will be said about it as the day goes on.

Hey, I guess if Art Monk made it.........

This is a sad day in sports for me.

In 2006, Bentley signed with the Browns. At the press conference, he was nearly in tears. This was a life long dream for Bentley to play for his home team, the team he was a die-hard fan of. He just wanted to play for that team and help them win.

He tore his knee up in the first contact drills in 2006, nearly lost his leg (and possibly life), and tried to come back last year. He wasn't quite there, and the Browns put him on IR.

I have been hoping that one day he would finally get to play in a game for his favorite team, and now, yesterday, he is cleared to practice.

Obviously, something happened over the last two years, some bad blood developed between him and the team. You could tell in his interview yesterday he was open to leaving the team, he said he made a decision of the heart, when he signed with Cleveland 2 years ago for less money. He said he now realizes that every decision is made as a business decision.

I really hope we find out what happened. I will miss him and the excitement of his come back, over the last couple years, the team has addressed the line where Bentley just isn't needed anymore. Its a sad day for me as a Browns fan

Well this was a nice Cleveland story for about 24 hours. Interesting move by Bentley...it sounds as if he has some issues with the guys running the show in Cleveland. Bentley was one of the top guards in the NFL three years ago in New Orleans. Tenacious as hell. He's still young enough where if he can stay on the field this year he could get another big payday. I think everyone is anxious to see how the leg holds up.

Maybe it was the staph infectioin thing going around in Cleveland? Isn't that what delayed his and other Browns recovery?

If he doesn't want to be an insurance policy, he should come to Atlanta. Upon his signing, we'd put him in the Ring of Honor...

how hard is it to move from center to guard?
As a rook he was one of the most dominant guards in the game. He made the pro bowl in his second season as a guard. Switched to center in 04 and made two straight pro bowls at that position. I believe Bentley could have been a very good LT if moved there. He was that gifted. I don't know what he'll look like after all the physical problems but it's just his sixth year coming up. Raiders, Steelers, Bears, Panthers, Falcons, Cards and a few others should all consider busting the bank to sign this guy, imo. It's worth the risk looking at some of these OLs.

I would think that at 28 he *could* fit in the Chiefs plans. They definitely need help up the middle and could play guard or center for KC. All depends on what kind of contract he thinks he will get.

KC is another excellent spot. Just to clarify, he switched to center in 04 (not 05) and made the pro bowl then and in 05 before things went south in 06.

IMO, there is obviously something still wrong with his health. Yes, he participated yesterday, but Phil Savage obviously thinks he is nowhere near what he was before the injury. He wouldn't outright release a healthy lineman to be taken by someone else for nothing. I refuse to believe that. He could play somwhere else and help out, but I can't see him starting and being the Pro Bowler he once was.

ugh! you know what? this cocky punk thinks that we are garbage huh?!! well, bentley, guess you are the traitor you dumb punk. go smoke some weed, shut up, go to the stoolers, and hopefully A. get killed playing or B. rip that knee to shreds again! better yet, when shaun rogers does to him what fat ted did, i will be howling at his ugly self!

i know it was too harsh!

but he didn't need to just quit on us!

he should just call it quits while he still can, before one of our fat lineman squish that torn knee again!

i think of 3: rogers, williams, and shaun smith!

Are you kidding me. Why would you even consider posting something like this? As a lifelong Browns fan I was shocked too, but before you go posting garbage like this, I would wait for the whole story to come out. Granted you are entitled to your own opinion, and while I don't agree with alot of them, I don't think I would have shared this one.

Ask him next week when he gets back. Please don't post stuff like he did.J

If the Bears don't at least go to one of his workouts I might have to boycot their games. Seriously, I can handle the McCaskey's penny pinching, but if this guy is healthy and contributes to some other team just because they were willing to spend a little dough to sign him...LeCharles, if you are reading this, I want you to consider one thing: if you come to Chicago, your competition for starting on our line is Josh Beekman and Terrance Metcalf. Just roll those names around in your head for a while...mmmmm...Beekman and Metcalf.... :goodposting:

Dude, your an embarassment to Browns fans. You have no idea what happened. This guy loved the Browns, in fact, chose the Browns for less money because he was such a fan. Putting myself in that situation, we don't know what happened, but I'm guessing the organization screwed him over in some way and he felt hurt. He was making decisions because he loved the team, they were making decisions based on him as a pawn. Please know people that 99% of Browns fans don't feel this way.

I hear ya. I was born and raised up there in Ohio, I know how "some" Browns fans can be. No umbrella factor here.

It had everything to do with the contract, his contract was incentive/performance laden - he was signed to the minimum and received escalators for games played. Once he was told he was competing for a spot and given the already tense relationship he asked for his release. No one would trade for him with his contract, if he wants out he had to be cut and sign a new contract.I'm not even going to get into that Clown fan (not Browns fan) that posted earlier, this was a business decision, to wish death on someone for making a business decision...well, seek help. You need it. A lot of it.

it's been pretty obvious reading about the situation over the last two years that there is some bad blood that developed. i think a lot of it is related to the Browns not activating him off of PUP last season. i think basically his doctor was telling him that he could play, and for a variety of reasons the Browns did not want to activate him, and put him on IR.

they stated that he was running very well in his workout, but i wonder if they are concerned not only about his knee, but his overall strength. the pic in the paper he looked thinner somehow to me than when they signed him?

The Browns tweaked this guy enough that I would give it a 75% chance he goes to another AFC North team - most likely the Steelers
I would LOVE to see The Chuck in a Steeler uniform.....if that report about him running a flat 7.0 forty was a misprint. :) If that one is true, that makes me think he's not right yet.Seriously though, if he's even close to 100% the Steelers need to be at least talking to his agent riiiiight NOW.

Even if Bentley has lost some quicks his power can make up for it for a couple of seasons. I can't wait to see where this guy lands. The Steelers would be perfect. I could see the Bengals too since their O-line has been dookie since Steinbach left.
