BTTF 2017 : Scoobus wins World Series (3 Viewers)

HUNTER STRICKLAND RP

Hard to split hairs with one reliever vs another, and he kinda sucked for me in the sim last year, but I expect a bounce back from ok to good or great WHIP and even in his down year he did a good job keeping the ball in the park which is big for me and the Toronto Launching Pad.

@Arsenal of Doom

not from him
Probably true ... but also true with just about anyone else left, and with his increased velocity and leg not arm injury, if I get decent/startable innings, even 80+ of them at this point, that's probably worth taking. Plus my 4 & 5 guys are slated for a lot of innings if health goes well.

my other option there may have a better chance to stay healthy (like a lot better), a somewhat better chance to get over 100 innings, but a lot better chance at whatever innings he has being the absolute suck.

Strickland is a frustrating guy to watch.  He has great stuff but doesn't inspire much confidence.  I'm glad the Giants signed Melancon so I can avoid more speculative adds of Strickland as the closer in waiting.

He actually gave up the same number of HRs in 2015 and 2016.  His HR/9 dropped a bit because he pitched more innings.  But he always gives up a lot of flyballs and some of those will leave the yard.

David Robertson RP

@RnR
This seems like a good pick.  He's getting undervalued in fantasy closer rankings because the White Sox suck but SVs don't matter in this format.  His peripherals were poor for him last year but there's always volatility in reliever numbers because of small sample sizes.

Yeah, his K9 and BB9 both moved the wrong way but he had several similar seasons earlier in his career and stretch of 4 or 5 great years in between. The big difference seems to be that his fastball got hit more last year despite the same velocity, so it could be just the elevated BABIP and/or his control was a little off and he pitched from behind more. Even if he just repeats last year he's still decent value here I think and if he pitches more like the previous 4 seasons it's gravy.

Can't see his name without thinking of his blowup in the 2014 World Series/Playoffs.  Not sure some of those HRs have landed even now.

I need to neither watch him nor worry about pair season pressure situations. My man Melancon will deal with the last inning and even some return to his previous form should lend itself to a good enough season.

a modern day bobby parnell

Looked at him.  OPS the last 5 years: 0.729, .712, .722, .706, .723. Now that's consistent(ly mediocre).
I already have 2 catchers who might not catch (Ramos and Mesoraco) and a 2B who might not actually play there (Brad Miller) so I figured I'd better have a good plan B at 2nd base.

3 - L Kyle Seager 3B
4 - R Jose Abreu 1B
5 - R Yasmany Tomas LF
6 - R Jedd Gyorko 2B
7 - R Tom Murphy C
8 - L Leonys Martin CF

Bench
L Jon Jay OF

Here's where I'm probably sitting line-up wise. Pretty boom-bust, particularly at the top with Dahl and Russell but I feel pretty good about both of their outlooks for the season, less so about Tomas and Gyorko, the later may not even qualify at 2B. Murphy is probably going to get 40-60% of the Rockies Catcher ABs and will mash and K a lot. I was going to draft Wolters in the round he went in and still think that was likely 2 or 3 rounds early but here we are.

I think Jay is likely to be the starting CF for Chicago so he could end up ahead of Martin and leading off assuming he does his typical OBP thing.

This makes me feel better about the suspect line-up. Bettis was like the 2nd best pitcher on my WIS team last year when I did the draft a whole line-up before taking a pitcher shtick. Betances and Robertson should be good back end anchors, at least on paper before the sim blows them up.

Getting to a Larry Plateau(tm) where it's so hard to decide between guys who all have issues that it's easier to be skipped and widdle down your choices.

Of course that ends when there simply are no choices and you pray to god someone doesn't snipe your one guy list you found from the same source of news the rest of us are about to also see.

The next great slugger of 2015... err 2016... err 2017?
i really don't know what to expect from Gallo this season. It's possible he could wind up as the everyday 1B and be an all-star, mashing 40+ home runs. It's possible he spends 4-5 months in AAA again.

He has an option remaining but really doesn't have a lot more to prove at AAA.  I think he's always going to have the strikeouts and the club has to deal with that.  At some point though, you need to stick him in the lineup on a regular basis and see what else he's capable of doing against big league pitching.

If they had any faith in him, I don't think Napoli would have gotten the term or $$$ he signed for
